Among the unique strengths that give the Bay Area its leading edge are its well developed hightechnology base, its world class research universities and its vigilant environmental groups. The Bay Area environmental technology firms, with their strong export orientation, are in a position to capitalise on the prevailing economic climate of liberalisation in South Asia. IIMB Management Review

Advertisements by foreign banks in the US were examined to determine the services advertised, promotional themes used and the degree of internationalization of the strategy depicted. The results indicated an emphasis on general institutional characteristics rather than a focus on specific services, and a tendency to emphasize the size of assets, internationality, experience and competitiveness. The study suggested an advertising life cycle whereby foreign banks became more competitive and globally oriented in their strategies as they gained experience and became more active in their host economy.

Managing high product variety and high demand uncertainty, while keeping operational and inventory costs under control and maintaining high customer service levels, is the supply chain challenge for many firms. An important and recent development in supply chain management is the concept of postponement strategy. Postponement delays an operational process to a later point in the supply chain, thereby delaying the point of product differentiation. Among other benefits, postponement strategy helps in reducing inventory levels, transport and operation lead times and transport costs, and facilitates responsiveness to customer demand. The expectation that firms that have a high differentiation strategy will also have low levels of licensing is not supported. For business units (BU) with products in the growth stages, the competitive strategy of the BU did not significantly affect licensing decisions. The results are not too surprising when one considers new technological advancements and global competition. A company may perceive its technological advantage as transitory and expect rapid imitation by competitors. In such a case, the company might want to license the innovation as quickly as possible to gain global acceptance. It is shown that when products mature, the …

Sheep pox is an acute disease that causes heavy losses due to high sheep mortality, costly eradication programs and ongoing problems with trade restrictions for many countries around the world. Australia until now has been unaffected, and although the risk of disease entry may be very slight, one case of sheep pox outbreak could cost the Western Australian economy as much as $50 million in damages, mostly from the trade disruption losses ( over the 21-month period of trading bans). The development of the American Depositary Receipt (ADR) market allows investors desiring to diversify in Latin America to follow three diversification strategies. First, they may invest in Latin American firms traded through ADRs in the U.S. equity market. Second, they may invest in the underlying stocks of Latin American ADRs traded in Latin American stock exchanges. Third, investors may invest in Latin American firms not cross-listed; hereafter called non-ADR firms, and traded in Latin American stock exchanges. Expert support systems (ESSs) are increasingly used in organizations to support individuals and groups in decision making. Although ESSs have been shown to enhance the decision-making capabilities of individuals, their benefits in supporting group decision making are less clear. To the best of our knowledge, no empirical research has evaluated the effectiveness of the technology in the group setting or compared its usefulness for supporting individual versus group decision making. The results of this research show that ESSs benefit decision making of both individuals and groups and novices are able to gain more from ESSs than experts. The findings also …

When consumers are presented with negative information about a brand that they have evaluated positively earlier, the extent to which they change their initial evaluation may depend on the formats in which information is presented (non-comparative vs. comparative) at the two stages. In four experiments, we manipulate the format in which information is presented at an initial and at a challenge stage and investigate their effects on the degree of revision in evaluative judgments. The results of the four experiments suggest that when consumers receive initial information in a noncomparative format, a comparative challenge causes a greater degree of revision …

Research using a comparative and international perspective on the management of human resources is examined, drawing on articles published in leading human resource management, management/ organizational behaviour and related social science journals between 1977 and 1997. In total a little under 2 per cent of the articles under review focused on the management of human resources in a comparative and international perspective. The largest group of these articles was comparative in nature (44 per cent), followed by those with an international perspective (35 per cent).
