Recreation Participation Patterns By Montana Residents, J. Allen Ellard, Norma P. Nickerson, Kim Mcmahon

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Results of a year-long study of resident travel and recreation in Montana. This report describes typical resident recreation patterns as well as annual, seasonal, and monthly participation. It also compares recreation participation of residents with different income levels, household type (with vs. without children), and discusses the value of Montana's natural resources for recreational purposes.

This paper explores whether excess holding period returns on long vis-a-vis short-term securities behave in a manner that is consistent with (1) market efficiency, (2) the time-varying-term-premium variant of the expectations hypothesis, and (3) theories of the term premium that view it as a reward for risk bearing. Both traditional and modern theories of the term premium imply that it should evolve fairly slowly over time as attitudes toward risk and/or perceived covariances with wealth or consumption change. Manufacturing Strategy And New Venture Performance: A Comparison Of Independent And Corporate Ventures In The Biotechnology Industry, Shaker A. Zahra, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Little empirical research has compared the manufacturing strategies of corporate and independent new ventures. This study explores these differences with data from the young, science-based biotechnology industry, and examines the performance effects of manufacturing strategy variables including scope, competitive thrust, and capabilities. The results show that the corporate and independent biotechnology new ventures pursue significantly different manufacturing strategies, and that different dimensions of manufacturing strategies affect the performance of corporate vs. independent ventures quite differently.

The beauty of intercollegiate athletics and the NCAA attempt to control them is that whatever is done, something else follows that will corrupt the solution. In a perfect world it would also produce new and more elaborate levels of corruption. The current case in point revolves around the attempt by the NCAA to mandate minimum SAT and ACT scores and thus guarantee some modicum of brain wave activity in the recruited student athlete.

The meat industry is an economic powerhouse for rural America - accounting for roughly one of every 16 rural manufacturing jobs. Moreover, this rural powerhouse is adding jobs at a fast clip, with recent growth of 8.5 percent a year versus just 1.2 percent a year for all rural manufacturing industries. Finally, rural America has captured a commanding 52 percent of all meat industry jobs, far above the level of a decade ago.

The Potential For Marketing Pork Products With Embedded Environmental Attributes: Results From An Experimental Study, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

Environmental issues such as air and water quality related to livestock production currently receive much attention. Potential methods for environmental improvement range from regulation to market solutions. This study looks at consumer willingness to pay for pork products with embedded environmental attributes. Experimental auctions showed that over one-half of the participants (62%) paid a premium, that did not vary significantly between differing regions of the United States. (JEL Codes Q13, Q25)
