Importance Of Book-Keeping, Levi S. Fulton, George W. Eastman

Accounting Historians Notebook

The introduction of A Practical System of Book-Keeping, Sixth Edition, Revised, by Levi S. Fulton and Geo. W. Eastman in 1852 provides comments that may be of some general interest to accounting historians. Obviously the authors' comments on pages 5-6 are intended, at least partially, to promote the book. However, one should note the definition of book-keeping, comments on the importance of records to people in various lines of work and particularly to the merchant, recommendations that book-keeping be more extensively taught at various levels of schools, identification of the value of book-keeping to "female education" and its importance along …

Accounting Historians Notebook

Conrad Weiser (1696-1760) ran a tannery, selling leather, buying hides as well as meat, soap, and other products. Additionally, he helped Colonial government officials in dealing with the Indians. A well-known businessman in Pennsylvania, Weiser kept meticulous accounting records. Some of his transactions were recorded in German, though most are in English. In any case, the German entries were translated into English in the course of preparing this book. Typical of the times, each account consisted of a debit (left) and contra credit (right) on facing pages. The debits usually signify what Weiser furnished to his customers, generally described starting …

The Internet Name Game And The Nonprofit Solution, Roger A. Lohmann Oct 1999

The Internet Name Game And The Nonprofit Solution, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper is a case study of the campaign to create a new internet names authority to handle the assignment of internet domain names. In terms familiar to nonprofit research community what began in the state sector, expanded into the third sector and then into the market and household sectors and the consumer economy. There is a second …

The Problem With "All For One And One For All" Expectations: Differential Effects Of Race And Commitment In The Workplace, James R. Jones

Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

“The examples cited here reinforce the need for theoreticians and practitioners alike to consider the difficulties that may arise from viewing people through a single lens.” As far back as 1968, with the findings of the Kerner Commission, there have been reports of "two Americans, separate and unequal." Indeed, the recent commission on race formed by President Clinton reached much the same conclusion. While three decades separate the work of two groups, the main inference drawn is strikingly consistent with regard to race. There is a persistent chasm in how majority group and minority group members view and are viewed …

Sports Marketing Ethics In Today's Marketplace, Gene R. Laczniak, Richard H. Burton, Patrick Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Sports marketing is a fast-growing business endeavor. However, certain aspects of it have drawn criticisms from several corners (e.g., media, government, coaches, and fans). This paper raises a number of ethical questions about various dimensions of sports marketing. Advice for addressing some of the ethical problems that occur is provided. The paper specifically asks if organizations using professional sports associations as a promotional lever for increasing sales can be hurt by a lack of ethics on the part of the leagues, teams, or players. It also implies that sport organizations, regardless of economic benefits derived or strong player unions, have …
