Getting The Goods Delivered In Dense Urban Areas: A Snapshot Of The Last Link Of The Supply Chain, Anne G. Morris, Alain L. Kornhauser, Mark Kay

Data were analyzed from 74 "Freight Mobility Interviews" - surveys conducted with key transportation executives whose products and services are shipped into New York City's central business district (CBD). Quantitative data collected included company profiles, defined by product category; kind of transportation service; type of distribution channel; characteristics of dispatched truck trip; and time and cost for last leg of trip. Major barriers to freight mobility identified by logistics/distribution/ transportation managers were widespread congestion, theft/vandalism, inadequate docking space, and insufficient curbside parking for commercial vehicles. When deciding upon the price to charge for one of their products, the managers of the Soho Foundry in Birmingham placed great reliance upon the data stored in their accounting system. By the last decade of the 18th century, the nature of the steam engine business was changing rapidly and reputation alone was insufficient to attract customers. Organizational change, both developmental and transformational, is an issue of central and enduring concern in the organizational sciences. However, the processes, mechanisms and sequencing of events that describe how and why social systems change have not been satisfactorily explicated at a theoretical level and constitutes one of the major challenges facing the social sciences. This research examines issues and implications from an emerging perspective—the complexity sciences—developed to explain the mechanisms and processes of change in physical and natural systems. This dissertation seeks to investigate and explain the differences in the adoption rates of several technological innovations at three levels of aggregation: (1) U.S. state level, (2) U.S. Bureau of Census regional level, and (3) cross-national level. A unique feature of this dissertation is that it focuses not only on the temporal (time-related) but also on the spatial (space-related) dimensions of the process of diffusion of innovations. The Mansfield-Blackman diffusion model (1974) is used to estimate the adoption rates of three technological innovations over the period 1960-90 across the 50 states of the U.S. The model is also used to …

WESTERN Australian women in agriculture contribute huge economic, social and community benefits to industry, to the rural sector, and to the State overall. That this contribution is not fully acknowledged, is perhaps due to the lack of clear data; many economic or social measures do not disaggregate data by gender, despite women's and men's roles being very different. Other measures are based on outdated assumptions about how work is done, and by whom.

Airline Overbooking In The Multi-Class Case, Joseph Coughlan

This paper presents an airline overbooking model at a class level for one servcie compartment-cabin. Class level demand data i sused to determine the number of bookings that can be taken for each class. The model is optimised through the use of mulit-dimentsional search routines. The control level model developed is tested with data supplied by Ireland's national airline, Aer Lingus. The model shows a significant improvement over previous methods employed by Aer Lingus and was subsequently adopted by the airline.

Blooming Clothing was established in 1985 by O’Byrne and two other partners. The aim was to specialise in a niche of the women’s outerwear market: maternity wear. The company started business with a retail outlet in Dublin and sold maternity wear under the Blooming label, which it outsourced through local suppliers. Several approaches have been used to estimate premium liabilities. The emphasis of these approaches has been on unearned premium and deferred policy acquisition expenses (DPAE), as such items represent the largest components of premium liabilities. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework for the evaluation of premium liabilities and to augment the actuarial literature. We define and review the individual components of premium liabilities as well as the regulatory requirements and Canadian Institute of Actuaries recommendations and standards of practices related to premium liabilities.
