AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

The Farm Service Agency (FSA) guaranteed loan programs are an important source of credit to production agriculture. The two major guaranteed loan programs are the operating loan (OL) program and the farm ownership (FO) loan program. Guaranteed loans insure payment to the lender of up to 95% of the losses in the event of borrower default. FSA has historically been involved in lending to farm operators via direct loans, but emphasis has changed over the last two decades to making guaranteed loans the primary source of FSA associated lending to production agriculture. Defining A New Type Of Organizational Leadership: The Heroic Leader, Ira J. Morrow

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

In this paper the concepts of leadership and heroism are defined, discussed, and compared. The concepts are then integrated to form an orientation toward leadership known as heroic leadership. A model of heroic leadership consisting of five major dimensions including character, work orientation, risk-taking and reward orientation, relating to others, and organizational impact is then presented and discussed. Major sub-elements for each dimension are also identified and examined. The implications for leadership in non-heroic organizational settings are highlighted.

The main text of this document concentrates on the costs of the proposed strategies, and the on-farm financial benefits from forecast production changes - in particular the production differences between the 'do nothing' and 'with strategy' scenarios.

Members of the catchment group indicated however that their main focus was on preserving their capital base. Hence some discussion of the values of land lost to salt and premiums/discounts for 'landcared' vs 'unlandcared' land appears later in the report. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes explains to Watson and the reader how to use Solver, an application of Excel used to solve mathematical programming problems. Holmes walks his audience through modeling the problem in Excel, using Solver to get the optimal solution, a description of variables, a discussion of shadow prices and right-hand sensitivity analysis, and an explanation of reduced costs.

Some small-holders are able to generate reliable and substantial income flows through small-scale dairy production for the local market; for others, a set of unique transactions costs hinders participation. Cooperative selling institutions are potential catalysts for mitigating these costs, stimulating entry into the market, and precipitating growth in rural communities. Trends in cooperative organization in East-African dairy are evaluated. Empirical work focuses on alternative techniques for effecting participation among a representative sample of periurban milk producers in the Ethiopian highlands.
