Whittier Scholars Program

This project is a study of three Latino nonprofit middle class socio-political institutions, The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), and The National Council of La Raza (NCLR). This case study will support and strengthen Philip Selznick's institutional theory to explain how these organizations resist external and internal pressures. This project also includes Albert O. Hirschman's insights into Exit, Voice, and Loyalty to clarify the reasons members in organizations remain loyal participants and how this contributes to stability.

This thesis will investigate whether empowerment of a workforce has a positive correlation on employee job satisfaction.

Research supports that the automotive industry is continuously focusing on the reduction of structural costs. One area that is commonly focused on is the reduction of manpower, specifically management. As the number of managers are reduced some of the work is being redistributed to the employees. Along with the additional work comes decision making responsibilities.

Although research supports that empowerment has a positive correlation on business results and working environments, it is inconclusive that empowerment has a positive correlation relative to job satisfaction. …

What Moves Retail Property Returns At The Metropolitan Level?, Mark Eppli, James D. Shilling, Kerry D. Vandell

In this article the determinants of metropolitan-level appraisal-based retail property returns are examined by estimating a six-equation model of retail construction starts, retail sales, stock-market returns, commercial mortgage rates, inflation, and the logarithm of stock-market volatility. Residuals from these equations are then used to explain actual movements in retail real estate returns. Our empirical procedure looks at both unadjusted and unsmoothed appraisal-based retail real estate returns. The general finding is that unsmoothed appraisal-based retail real estate returns lag significantly behind market conditions. Furthermore, the results suggest that very little of the variation in metropolitan-level appraisal-based retail real estate returns can …

Previous studies on national identity have centered around national identity formation by individuals because of the influence of values and preferences; social connectedness through social interactions; and values orientation of individuals and groups and their ability to change. Talking to a cross section of ordinary Canadians in their own setting about their experiences, stories and thoughts on what is happening in Canada provides an opportunity to assess their thoughts and ideas about a unique Canadian identity. Environmental Change And Management Staffing: An Empirical Examination Of The Electric Utilities Industry, Ram Subramanian, Carol M. Sanchez

This paper examines the relationship between environmental change, changes in competitive dynamics, and top management staffing in the electric utilities industry during the period surrounding the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct 92). The findings suggest that following the passage of the EPAct 92, competition in the electric utilities industry intensified placing greater emphasis on achieving internal, firm-level efficiencies. This external environmental change and the corresponding shift in the competitive context resulted in an adjustment in the composition of the top management coalition in these firms. The term "capacity building" has caught on quickly within the nonprofit sector, specifically with Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs). In fact, many funding organizations, agencies and foundations are now requesting that their partners engage in capacity building activities. How then, do we determine which organizations have the capacity to adhere to their mission statements and to deliver their services in a sustained fashion? This is an important question for two reasons. First, it asks us to identify the factors which lead to capacity, and second, it suggests that capacity building is a continuous process. Interdependence, Punitive Capability, And The Reciprocation Of Punitive Actions In Channel Relationships, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp

Using data from automobile dealers in the Netherlands, the authors find that dealers' punitive actions toward their key suppliers are affected by their perceptions of their own and their supplier's interdependence and punitive capabilities, as well as by the supplier's punitive actions. Punitive actions are affected by interdependence, but a more complete picture is achieved by also examining punitive capability. The authors test hypotheses based on bilateral deterrence, conflict spiral, and relative power theories, but none of these comprehensively explains the effects of both total power and power asymmetry. A National Study Of Domestic Travel: Results For Montana, Rita J. Black

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Analysis of Secondary Data from the American Travel Survey Conducted by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Washington, DC A nationwide survey of approximately 80,000 households was conducted to document domestic travel patterns of Americans for an entire year. The survey was designed to record travel involving only the travelers' destinations. The data for each state were classified into three areas: nonresidents traveling to each state, each state's residents traveling within their state, and each state's residents traveling out-of-state. The results for Montana are presented in this report, and comparisons to ITRR nonresident data are made.

This study reviews the experiences of workforce development organizations in Singapore and Penang, Malaysia. On the basis of the similarities in population and workforce size, the study argues that lessons can be learned from the two places which can be applied to U.S. regions. The study further argues that place-based workforce development strategies, such as those implemented in Singapore and Penang, will be essential to the economic competitiveness of manufacturing and export-oriented regions in a globalized economy. The topic of entrepreneurship at midlife or later was studied against a background reflecting the scope and role of entrepreneurship in the U.S., the phenomenon of downsizing/early retirement, and issues around work and aging. The goal of the project was to understand the entrepreneurial process for later life entrepreneurs, and the relationship between that process and both the personal characteristics of and the environmental conditions for individuals who become later life entrepreneurs.
