Personal computers have changed the way that business is conducted in today's office. Every position in a company is affected by the use of personal computers from secretaries to top level management. Tasks and job duties are performed more easily thereby increasing productivity. Personal computers in the 1990s will be networked via LANs to other personal computers, minicomputers and mainframes to enhance people's abilities and allow them to perform their jobs better. Vertical Integration Of Computing Facilities, A Transaction Cost Approach, Michael Piptea, Dan Pieptea

This paper develops a generalized model for computing capacity by identifying the main activities in a computer facility as formal transactions. The formal transactions carried out in a computing environment are characterized along two dimensions: freqency of occurrence and idiosyncrasy of assets. Vfe make recommendations as to how these formal transactons should be executed - across markets, internally or using intermediate forms of governance. It is shown that transactions in a computing facility fall into one of three categories: procurement of assets, maintenance and modification of assets, and collection, storage and processing of data into information. Software Project Management - There Is Never Enough Time To Do It Right!, Brian Mcnamara, James Uigen, John Tarjan

Efficiency in software development projects is examined. Project management tools— GANTT charts, program evaluation and review technique (PERT), and critical path method (CPM) are defined and discussed. Of these productivity tools GANTT charts and PERT are the most relevant. Based on an analysis by Shelmerdine (1989), six steps that pro\ide guidelines for software development are presented. These steps provide the project manager with an opportunity to produce efficiency and deliver a software development project on time. Selected project management software packages are presented.

The Moderating Influence Of User Characteristics On The Relationship Between User Involvement And Perceived Usefulness Of Information Systems, Bo K. Wong, John K. S. Chong

This study examines the moderating effect of user characteristics on the relationship between user involvement and perceived usefulness of ISs. Thirty-two organi2:ations with 127 users have participated in this study. Results indicate that among user characteristics, feelings about the existence of procedures to handle conflicts between users and the IS staff, years with the company, and years of IS experience produce moderating effects in the planning and design stage, or in the implementation stage of IS development.

Improvements In Computer Literacy Linked To Gender And Learning Style, Floyd J. Brock, Wayne E. Thomsen, John P. Kohl

Four-year colleges and universities have invested time, faculty, floor space, and monies for software and hardware in teaching introductory courses in Management Information Systems (MIS). Do these resources increase the level of computer literacy (hiformation fundamentals)? This paper reports on the before and after results of a questionnaire on computer literacy given to 143 students taking an introductory MIS course. Differences in the amount of learning are analyzed from the perspective of a variety of demographic factors (age, gender, typing skills, and computer access) and Kolb's Learning Styles Inventory (KLSI).

Perceptions Of Information Systems Structures' Impact On Mis Success And Effectiveness, Ephrem Eyob

This article provides results from a study on the perceptions of information systems structures' impact on implementation of MIS success and effectiveness via organizational context variables. The focus is on the use of MIS effectiveness and success variables that are utilized in MIS research. Several hypotheses were tested to discern impact of information systems structures on MIS effectiveness and success. The results show that several of these organizational context variables are associated to various degrees, depending on the MIS structure, with MIS success and effectiveness.

The impact of computers in organizational management has been the subject of much literature. As such, one can note distinct variations as to impact on different levels of today's management. A linear relation between the future of organizational management and advanced computer technology has been detailed. Parameters such as the human factor, integrated systems or networking, future computer aided manufacturing, and fifth generation com.puters were the key issues on revolutionizing this same management. It is predicted that human like robots and thinking machines slowly will eliminate management, wherein organizational structures will be redesigned to suit this revolution.
