World-Class Service, W. Gerald Glover, Germaine W. Shames

Hospitality Review

In the discussion - World-Class Service - by W. Gerald Glover, Associate Professor, Restaurant, Hotel and Resort Management at Appalachian State University and Germaine W. Shames, Hilton International, New York, Glover and Shames initially state: “Providing world-class service to today's traveler may be the key for hospitality managers in the current competitive market. Although an ideal, this type of service provides a mandate for culturally aware managers. The authors provide insight into several areas of cultures in collision.”

Up to the time this essay is written, the authors point to a less-than-ideal level of service as being the standard in …

The Importance Of Management Philosophy To The Success Of Pay-For-Knowledge Systems: An Empirical Test, Timothy P. Schweizer Aug 1988

The Importance Of Management Philosophy To The Success Of Pay-For-Knowledge Systems: An Empirical Test, Timothy P. Schweizer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, pay-for-knowledge compensation systems have received serious attention from practitioners and organizational researchers. Some have hypothesized that the specific mechanics of pay-for-knowledge systems are critical to success while others have suggested that contextual factors determine whether or not these systems will be successful. Empirical research has not been very supportive of these hypotheses, however.

Another hypothesis is that management philosophy is important to the success of pay-for-knowledge systems. The purpose of this study is to test this hypothesis by addressing three questions: 1) Are the components that make up management philosophy related to the successes experienced by companies …

Minor Theatre And Minor Building, Susie Van Kirk Aug 1988

Minor Theatre And Minor Building, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

The Minor Theatre and the adjacent Minor Building have been submitted for consideration for designation under the City of Arcata's Landmark and Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (LHP). Both buildings are historically important to Arcata by virtue of their association with pioneer lumberman and entrepreneur Isaac Minor and because of their contribution to the commercial, social and cultural life of the community. Although the buildings have experienced exterior alterations since their construction three- quarters of a century ago, both retain sufficient architectural integrity to easily qualify for LHP designation.

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan Jul 1988

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan

Public Health Faculty Publications

A variety of magazines are directed at American women. Some emphasize fashion, while others cover child rearing, homemaking, or gardening; still others stress career, coping with multiple women's roles, or feminism. Almost without exception, women's health concerns are periodically addressed by these magazines. Because women are the target audience, I have always assumed that these publications have women's best interests at heart. Is this a realistic assumption? I'm not sure. I also do not know what influence women's magazines have on women's health behavior, but I think it is substantial. If this is so, then shouldn't we hold these publications …

German, French And British Manufacturing Strategies Compared: A Growth Towards Each Other, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Manufacturing has gained over the last years in attention as a tool to create competitive advantage. For four years now a survey has been carried out by a research team at Insead to build a database on the manufacturing strategies as they are defined and implemented by large European companies. In this paper some of the 1987 data are presented, and a comparison of manufacturing strategies of large companies in the three most important European countries is made. Though the most important conclusion is that there are only slight differences between the three countries, one can see some difference in …
