Asset Prices And Information Traders’ Abilities: Evidence From Experimental Asset Markets, Lucy F. Ackert, Bryan K. Church, Ping Zhang
Faculty and Research Publications
This study reports the results of fifteen experimental asset markets designed to investigate the effects of forecasts on market prices, traders’ abilities to assess asset value, and the link between the two. Across the fifteen markets, the authors investigate alternative forecast-generating processes. In some markets the process produces an unbiased estimate of asset value and in others a biased estimate. The processes generating the biased forecasts, though, are less variable than the process generating the unbiased forecast. The authors find that, in general, periodend asset price reflects private forecasts, regardless of the forecast-generating process. Subsequently, they investigate whether traders’ abilities …

Management Consultancy: Issues, Perspectives, And Agendas [Preface], Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This issue of International Studies of Management and Organizationbrings together five articles that reflect the rich array of contemporaryresearch that is being conducted into the activities of the managementconsultancy industry. Management consultancy, in various forms, has existed foras long as complex organizations. However, its increasing economicsignificance, associated with the rapid expansion in the number ofconsultancies and the rise of large multinational consultancy firms, as well asthe influence and impact of the fashionable management knowledge and techniqueson which much of their work is based, are more recent phenomena. To date, detailed conceptual and empirical research into the work of consultants hasbeen slight …
Managing Project Uncertainty: From Variation To Chaos, Arnoud De Meyer, Christoph H. Loch, Michael T. Pich
Managing Project Uncertainty: From Variation To Chaos, Arnoud De Meyer, Christoph H. Loch, Michael T. Pich
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The article cites a study finding that accurately gauging the degree of uncertainty inherent in the projects can help project managers quickly adapt to it. Researchers studied 16 projects in areas including personal-computer development, telecommunications, Internet startups, pharmaceutical development, iron-ore processing, airship development, and building construction, to examine risk management and project outcomes. They found that most managers failed to recognize that there are different types of uncertainty, each requiring a different management approach. This paper explores uncertainty-based management, which derives planning, monitoring and management style from an uncertainty profile comprising four types of uncertainty: variation, foreseen uncertainty, unforeseen uncertainty, …

The Culture Of Technology Of Singapore, Alwyn Lim
The Culture Of Technology Of Singapore, Alwyn Lim
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The objective of this paper is to map the sociological context in which the cultural economy of technology of Singapore exists. Taking a socio-histori cal perspective, this paper argues that the development of Singapore as a technological 'intelligent island' must take centre stage in relation to the soci ological analysis of modern Singapore's political, economic, and socio-cultural structure. This involves a critique of theories of the information society and empirical research on East Asian developmental states. The aim is to chart the development of technology in Singapore, from its founding as a colonial port-city to its current status as an …
Situational Tests In Student Selection: An Examination Of Predictive Validity, Adverse Impact, And Construct Validity, Filip Lievens, Pol Coetsier
Situational Tests In Student Selection: An Examination Of Predictive Validity, Adverse Impact, And Construct Validity, Filip Lievens, Pol Coetsier
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The Flemish Admission Exam 'Medical and Dental Studies' is comprised of four cognitive ability tests and four situational tests, namely two work samples (i.e., a lecture and a medical text) and two video-based situational judgement tests (i.e., a physician-patient interaction and a medical expert discussion). On the basis of the Admission Exam scores of 941 candidates (359 men, 582 women) this study shows that situational tests significantly can predict better than cognitive ability tests, with lecture and text emerging as significant predictors. When situational tests are combined with cognitive ability tests, there are no mean gender differences. Situational tests also …

The Crop-Livestock Subsystem And Livelihood Dynamics In The Harar Highlands Of Ethiopia, Habtemariam Kassa, Robert W. Blake, Charles F. Nicholson
Agribusiness
Policy makers and extension planners often assume smallholder mixed farming systems are incapable of evolving fast enough to meet growing food demands and that livestock are relatively unimportant to household food production or welfare (FDRE, 1994), except for intensive units. The resulting policy promotes substitution of either intensive cropping or livestock production in place of the traditional mixed portfolio. Although widely promoted in the Harar Highlands, farmers resist these recommendations in favour of more diverse and integrated systems with crops, livestock, and non-agricultural activities. The contrast between what policy makers and development practitioners think and what farmers do signifies misunderstanding …

Livestock Land Use Change, And Environmental Outcomes, Robert W. Blake, Charles F. Nicholson
Agribusiness
Rapid predicted worldwide growth in demand for animal products to 2020—the so-called “next food revolution” in animal agriculture—portends complex interactions among people, biological and geophysical resources, and economic objectives. A restructuring of global food demands is expected: in contrast to current patterns, most (>60%) global production of meat and milk will be consumed by households in the developing countries (Delgado et al., 1999). The key drivers of this change are income growth, population growth, urbanization, and increased opportunities for trade. We identified some of the environmental risks, and recuperative effects, of animal agriculture in a recent article (Nicholson et …

Soil, Plant And Cattle Nutrient Dynamics On Pastures Of The Western Amazon Of Brazil, B. Rueda, R. W. Blake, E. Fernandes, Charles F. Nicholson, J. F. Valentim
Agribusiness
Cattle production on Brachiaria pastures is a primary use of cleared forestland in the western Brazilian Amazon. About 6.8 million hectares in the States of Acre and Rondônia have been deforested, where 75% of land is now grazed (IBGE, 1998). The principal pasture species are B. brizantha and B. decumbens with the latter in decline from spittlebug susceptibility (Deois incompleta; Gonçalves et al., 1996). The general pattern of pasture establishment in the Amazon basin includes felling and burning forest biomass, planting annual crops for one to three years (especially on small farms), and then seeding to grasses. The …

The survey (see Appendix) was developed to obtain information needed to evaluate how receptive local grocers are to carrying value-added products produced in Tennessee and to identify the primary steps/procedures/conditions that value-added agri-entrepreneurs should consider to best target local grocers. The entire grocery store survey project was accomplished through the cooperative efforts of several teams of contributing partners.
Interim Management Arrangements For The Commercial Mackerel Fishery. Ministers Responses To The Final Report Of The Mackerel Independent Advisory Panel. (Fisheries Management Paper 164), Kim Chance
Fisheries management papers
The Government recognises that the mackerel fishery is important to both the recreational and commercial fishing sectors. However, the purpose of these arrangements is not to allocate the mackerel resource between the sectors but within the commercial sector. Resources sharing issues are subject to investigation in the Integrated Fisheries Management Review where alternative management frameworks and principles for allocating fish stocks to ensure maximum benefit to the community are examined.

Report To The Minister For Agriculture, Forestry And Fisheries By The Integrated Fisheries Management Review Committee, Department Of Fisheries
Fisheries management papers
The Integrated Fisheries Management Review Committee was established to develop a strategy to integrate the management and sustainable use of fish resources. The Committee’s report proposes an alternative management framework and a set of guiding principles for allocating fish stocks to ensure optimal benefits are realised for the WA community. The report does not, and was not intended to, address specific allocation issues in particular fisheries – this will be a function of the framework and processes put in place following this review.
Attribute-Based Differentiation Of Alternatives, Jeffrey Keisler
Attribute-Based Differentiation Of Alternatives, Jeffrey Keisler
Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series
An intermediate step is introduced to the decision dialogue process for decision analysis. Alternatives are refined after they have been generated within a strategy table but before they are subject to more detailed evaluation. Two or more judges create a subjective mapping from alternatives to attributes that will later be mapped to criteria. In strategy tables, each of the alternative strategies consists of a coherent set of choices made across several decisions that are to be coordinated. These strategic alternatives are modified so as to increase their differentiation in the attribute space, rather than in the decision space alone. When …
The Role Of Commitment In Relationship Marketing In Consumer Services: An Airline Perspective, Ceara Cooper
The Role Of Commitment In Relationship Marketing In Consumer Services: An Airline Perspective, Ceara Cooper
Masters
This study proposes a relationship marketing model, which identifies the antecedents of commitment in the context of consumer services. The literature review initially considers relationship marketing (RM) and the concept of commitment from the context of the marketing and social psychology literature. Commitment is a key element of RM. If parties to a relationship are not committed, the relationship risks dissolution. In this study, commitment is conceptualised as having two distinct dimension i.e. affective and calculative commitment. Affective commitment represents a positive motivation for relationship continuance, whereas calculative commitment represents a negative motivation. Many studies consider commitment to be a …

Spillover Effects Of Fdi On Innovation In China : An Analysis Of Provincial Data, Kui Yin Cheung, Ping Lin
Spillover Effects Of Fdi On Innovation In China : An Analysis Of Provincial Data, Kui Yin Cheung, Ping Lin
CAPS Working Paper Series
We use the provincial data from 1995 to 2000 to test the impact of inward FDI on innovation activity in China. We found a positive effect of FDI on the number of patent applications filed by the domestic firms. This positive relationship persists when we divide the patents by types (invention, utility model and external design) and when we group the provinces into regions (the coastal, central, and the western regions). This positive spillover effect is much stronger for minor innovations such as external design and utility model, highlighting a "demonstration effect" of FDI. However, FDI into the coastal region …

Copyright Preemption And The Right Of Publicity, Jennifer E. Rothman
All Faculty Scholarship
This article addresses the conflict between an ever-expanding right of publicity and the federally guaranteed rights provided by copyright law. This conflict is highlighted in the Wendt v. Host International case in which the actors George Wendt and John Ratzenberger from Cheers used the right of publicity to prevent the show's creators from licensing the use of the Norm and Cliff characters in the decor of a chain of airport bars. Even though the licensing of the characters was explicitly allowed under copyright law, the Ninth Circuit held that the right of publicity prevented the creators from doing so. Similarly, …
