Would A Westerly Mall Benefit The Entire Town?, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It is the largest urban center in southwestern Rhode Island but, in reality, it is just a small town with a population approaching 20,000. A good example of small-town America, it is an attractive community and one in which residents take a good deal of pride."

The Reality Or Illusion Of A General Contingency Theory Of Management: A Response To The Longenecker And Pringle Critique, Fred Luthans, Todd I. Stewart Jul 1978

The Reality Or Illusion Of A General Contingency Theory Of Management: A Response To The Longenecker And Pringle Critique, Fred Luthans, Todd I. Stewart

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

In April 1977, we introduced the concept of a General Contingency Theory (GCT) of Management and proposed for its development a conceptual framework to integrate and synthesize diverse process, behavioral, and management science concepts and techniques (3). In their critique of GCT, Longenecker and Pringle (2) have argued that the concept of a contingency-based general theory of management is illusory, too ill-defined and nebulous to serve as a truly viable general theory. Our response is offered to clarify some of the points they raise and stimulate a continuing dialogue over the GCT construct which will hopefully contribute to the development …

Agricultural Development And Potential Markets In Singapore, Malaysia And Indonesia - Report Of A Study Tour, K R. Rutter Jul 1978

Agricultural Development And Potential Markets In Singapore, Malaysia And Indonesia - Report Of A Study Tour, K R. Rutter

All other publications

The study tour of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia was undertaken as part of the Government of Western Australia'a policy to broaden overseas markets for agricultural products. Preliminary examinations of these economies suggest that each represents a potentially large market given their large populations and levels of foreign reserves. Malaysia and Indonesia in particular have large reserves of petroleum, minerals and timber which provide their economies with the necessary foreign reserves to finance imports. Singapore relies on its strategic position as and entrepot port for its foreign reserves.

Those Inner City "Magnets" Are A Big Draw, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"His firm was the first to build the enclosed shopping malls that we find scattered throughout the suburbs today. It brought symphony orchestras and art museums into these malls. It was the first to provide extensive landscaping to these regional shopping centers, and which the company strives to make into community centers as well as centers of retail activity. And the most successful new town in this country, built completely with private funds, is the work of this company."

Baltimore: A City On The Move, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"On the way to Washington D.C. one drives through a part of America's seventh largest city and, based upon the popular image of this city, there is no reason to stop in Baltimore. But if one does stop, he would be surprised and impressed by the dynamism of a city on the move."

City Need Is Jobs For Young, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 was a landmark piece of legislation which continues to benefit communities in need. Over the past three years Providence has received close to $27 million which has been spent to improve housing, parks and historic buildings in addition to building and servicing community centers. The focus of this major legislation was on physical and social improvement of the community. The one unprovided area was economic development."

Incorporating Time-Lag Effects Into The Expectancy Model Of Motivation: A Reformulation Of The Model, Bronston T. Mayes Apr 1978

Incorporating Time-Lag Effects Into The Expectancy Model Of Motivation: A Reformulation Of The Model, Bronston T. Mayes

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Of cognitive theories of motivation, the most intensively researched in recent years is the Valence-Instrumentality-Expectancy (VIE) theory. A recent review of VIE research (9) shows the valence model to be reasonably predictive of occupational preference, job satisfaction, and valence of performance. The behavioral choice model has not fared so well; although it moderately predicts self-ratings of job effort, its efficiency in predicting criteria measured by other then self-ratings is questionable. When the behavioral choice model is used in research, the following findings are typical:

1. Intrinsic outcomes (feelings of accomplishment, etc.) are better predictors of satisfaction and performance than are …
