Institutional Predictors Of Campus Sexual Misconduct Reporting: The Role Of Gender In Leadership, Alison Cook, Christy Glass, Alicia Ingersoll

Management Faculty Publications

Sexual misconduct remains at crisis levels on American college campuses and is vastly underreported. Most research focuses on individual level risks of assault and perpetration, yet campuses vary significantly in sexual offenses and reporting rates. The current study responds to calls to consider institutional factors that shape campus climates for sexual misconduct and reporting. We consider the role of gender in leadership, analyzing the impact of women's appointment as college president on reporting rates over time. We consider individual and organizational mechanisms that may shape the impact of women's appointment on reporting rates. Our analyses rely on data from U.S. …

Quantum Frontiers: To Boldly Go, Mike Dixon, Cali Christensen, Rachael Leisek Jul 2020

Quantum Frontiers: To Boldly Go, Mike Dixon, Cali Christensen, Rachael Leisek

Management Faculty Publications

Cali Christensen started her summer at Quantum Frontiers (QF) at an intern lunch. Seated around her were 20 other interns from universities all over the country who had been selected from a pool of over 900 applicants to participate in high-tech, space-related research endeavors pushing the boundaries of various fields such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, machine learning, and physics. Cali quickly realized after the first presentation that she may be one of the only non-engineer or scientists in the room. Her internship was different from any others that QF had yet sponsored. Instead of making space-related discoveries in new …

From A To Z – Capacity Issues Of Arches And Zion National Parks, Mike Dixon, Alyssa Henke, Morgan Jones, Tyler Orr

Management Faculty Publications

After a long wait to enter the park, Caleb, an current MBA student, was handed a map by a ranger manning the entrance gate to Arches National Park (ANP). Caleb was warned that the park was expecting large crowds and heavy traffic throughout the day. The entrance into ANP began with a long road winding along the side of a cliff, which ultimately would bring him up to a massive plateau where he could begin to explore the park’s many hikes and scenic overlooks. Traffic was so heavy on this road that it took Caleb nearly an hour to simply …

Work-Life Events Theory: Making Sense Of Shock Events In Dual-Earner Couples, Wayne S. Crawford, Meredith J. Thompson, Blake E. Ashforth Jan 2019

Work-Life Events Theory: Making Sense Of Shock Events In Dual-Earner Couples, Wayne S. Crawford, Meredith J. Thompson, Blake E. Ashforth

Management Faculty Publications

Dual-earner couples are increasingly prevalent and encounter demands arising from each partner’s commitment to various work and life domains. Unfortunately, there has been little theoretical progress in explaining how dual-earner couples navigate work-life shock events, which we define as disruptive, novel, and critical events that require investment of a couple’s resources. Drawing from identity and sensemaking theories, we develop a theory of work-life shock events to explain how dual-earner couples perceive and respond to these events. We theorize that partners initially make sense of the event as individuals and then engage in couple-level sensemaking. We argue that each individual’s shock …

Organizational Communication And Individual Behavior: Implications For Supply Chain Risk Management, Scott Duhadway, Steven Carnovale, Vijay R. Kannan

Management Faculty Publications

Risk is a significant issue for supply chain managers. Not only must they contend with multiple dimensions of risk in decision‐making, they must reconcile decision‐making with broader organizational interests. This study examines the influence of organizational communication regarding supply chain risk on individual decision‐making strategies and the perceptions of risk. A multi‐stage experimental design is applied, in which decision‐makers make decisions across three dimensions of risk and adjust their risk‐taking behavior after being presented with organizational communication regarding supply chain risk levels. The relationship between organizational communication and the perceptions of supply chain risk is then explored after decision‐makers are …

In two studies (a longitudinal field experiment with an established B2C national chain, and a field experiment with a B2B software manufacturer), we demonstrate that starting a survey with an open-ended positive solicitation increases customer purchase behavior. Study 1, a longitudinal field experiment, showed that one-year following the completion of a survey that began by asking customers what went well during their purchase experience, customers spent 8.25% more than customers who completed a survey that did not include the positive solicitation. In Study 2, we utilized multiple treatment groups to assess the step-wise gains of solicitation, measurement, and solicitation frame. …

With limited financial sophistication, entrepreneurial consumers approach the financial marketplace more like retail financial consumers than business customers. However, the assumption of both legislators and regulators is that business-borrowers are more financially savvy than consumer-borrowers, and thus do not require as broad-reaching protections. This gap between marketplace policy protections and the lived reality of the vast majority of small business entrepreneurs sets the stage for entrepreneurial consumers to fall through the regulatory cracks and sets the stage for possible exploitation and abuse. This situation is potentially exacerbated for minority entrepreneurs who belong to protected classes that are generally more vulnerable …

Linkages Between Firm Innovation Strategy, Suppliers, Product Innovation, And Business Performance: Insights From Resource Dependence Theory, Muhammad Shakeel Sadiq Jajja, Vijay R. Kannan, Shaukat Ali Brah, Syed Zahoor Hassan

Management Faculty Publications

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use resource dependence theory to hypothesize that a buyer’s innovation strategy enhances supplier innovation focus and a buyer-supplier relationship that supports product innovation. These in turn positively impact buyer product innovation outcomes and business performance. Moreover, it is argued that the buyer-supplier relationship positively moderates the impact of supplier innovation focus on product innovation. Design/methodology/approach Structural equation modeling and hierarchical linear regression are used to test hypotheses. Findings The results support all hypotheses and suggest that company (buyer) age and variables related to buyer engagement with international markets directly influence performance. The …

Supply Chain Strategy And The Role Of Suppliers: Evidence From The Indian Sub-Continent, Muhammad Shakeel Sadiq Jajja, Vijay R. Kannan, Shaukat Ali Brah, Syed Zahoor Hassan

Management Faculty Publications

Supply chain strategy is widely recognized as being a crucial component of a broader corporate strategy. However, the relationships between a firm’s strategic supply chain focus, the tactical orientation of its suppliers, and the firm’s performance, are less well understood. Much of what is known is also based on developed country contexts. This study empirically examines relationships between a buying firm’s supply chain strategy and operational dimensions of its suppliers in a developing country context.

This research examines the impact of role boundary management on the work-family interface, as well as on organizational (job embeddedness) and family (relationship tension) outcomes. First, we integrate conservation of resources theory with crossover theory, to build a theoretical model of work-family boundary management. Second, we extend prior work by exploring positive and negative paths through which boundary management affects work and family outcomes. Third, we incorporate spouse perceptions to create a dynamic, systems-perspective explanation of the work-family interface. Using a matched sample of 639 job incumbents and their spouses, we found that family-to-work boundary transitions was related to the …

From Tulip Bulbs To Sub-Prime Mortgages. Analyzing The Sub-Prime Crisis: The Case For A Systemic Approach, Alan A. Stephens, J. Brian Atwater, Vijay R. Kannan

Management Faculty Publications

The collapse of the sub-prime mortgage market parallels several earlier failures within the financial services sector, begging the question why the lessons of past failures were not learned. Throughout history from the tulip bulb crisis of the 1600s to the most recent economic crisis, decision-makers keep making the same mistakes. This occurs in part because of a failure to recognize similarities between past and current events. This conceptual paper aims to use systems dynamics tools to examine the crisis and illustrate how seemingly independent events are linked. Design/methodology/approach: The paper provides a fundamental review of systems thinking concepts and uses …

Supply Chain Management Practices As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Operations Capability And Firm Performance, Chinchun Hsu, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, G. Keong Leong

Management Faculty Publications

The current study uses mediated regression analysis and structural equation modeling to test the proposition that supply chain management practices mediate the relationship between operations capability and firm performance. Operations capability is defined in terms of a firm's new product design and development, total quality management and just-in-time capabilities. Results support the research model and also suggest the existence of a direct relationship between operations capability and performance.

Management Faculty Publications

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of information sharing capability on buyer-supplier relationships and firm performance. It is proposed that information sharing capability, the integration of a firm's information/decision systems and business processes with those of supply chain partners, is an antecedent of collaborative buyer-supplier relationships, defined in terms of supply chain and relationship architecture. Further, it is proposed that these relationships positively impact a firm's market and financial performance. Design/methodology/approach - This research uses multiple linear regression to analyze a set of survey data from the USA, Europe and New Zealand. Findings - …

The Impact Of Operations Capability On Firm Performance, K. C. Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, R. Narasimhan

Management Faculty Publications

We propose that a firm's operations capability is manifested through its new product design and development, just-in-time, and quality-management efforts. Moreover, we propose that operations capability, so defined, directly and positively impacts firm performance. Survey data were used to independently calibrate and validate a structural equation model linking operations capability, a second-order construct, to firm performance. Results provide support for the model and demonstrate a positive relationship between operations capability and firm performance.

Acquisition Of Operations Capability: A Model And Test Across Us And European Firms, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Jayanth Jayaram, Ram Narasimhan

Management Faculty Publications

In this paper, a three-factor model of operations capability is presented which, unlike previous studies that view capability as an outcome, examines the drivers of capability acquisition. The model proposes that capability acquisition is a function of an organization's commitment to the principles of quality management, just-in-time practices, and effective new product development processes. Furthermore, the paper proposes that these underlying facets of capability acquisition are common across geographic boundaries. The model is tested using data drawn from US and European companies. Results not only provide support for the three-factor model, but also for the invariance of the model and …
