Teacher Gender And Pay Effects On Ohio Student Performance, Robert Clark Gibson Jan 1993

Teacher Gender And Pay Effects On Ohio Student Performance, Robert Clark Gibson

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This investigation attempts to see if Card and Kreuger's retrospective findings that a significant positive relationship between higher ratios of female to male teachers and later increased earnings of workers extends to current test results of Ohio School Districts. One possible explanation for increased earnings later in life to be associated with a higher ratio of female teachers is that lack of alternative opportunities for females in the labor market before 1966 made it possible to hire more effective female teachers for a given salary. If the same conditions hold districts with higher ratios of teachers on their staff would …

Transactions, Costs, And The Supply Of Low-Income Rental Housing: The Case Of Section 8 Rental Certificates And Vouchers In Dayton, Ohio, Michele Dawn Mccarren

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Either private markets or publicly-subsidized programs can provide low-income housing. Federal programs such as the Section 8 low-income housing assistance program combines public funds with the existing private housing stock to provide housing for low-income families. Tenants, (or consumers) receive rent subsidies through either vouchers or rental certificates. The housing authority pays the voucher or rental certificate amount directly to the landlord each month.

Transaction costs, defined as the costs of negotiating, creating and enforcing contracts, determine in part the incentives for landlords to participate in government programs. Costs such as time, increased investment to maintain government housing quality standards, …

A Comparison Of The Naval Air Systems Command Model Iii Method With The United States Air Force Repair Level Analysis Method Of Level Of Repair Analysis For Recommendation Of A Lora Methodology On The Joint Service V-22 Osprey Program, John David Driessnack

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

In the past 30 years Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and Level of Repair Analysis (LORA) has been developed within the Department of Defense (DoD). The LORA process, outlined in the new Military Standard (MIL-STD) 1390D, is required to be accomplished in each DoD weapon system acquisition program. The Standard outlines 13 different service peculiar models. The Joint V-22 Program must determine an effective LORA methodology that appropriately considers Service unique requirements while limiting the need to run both the NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND (NAVAIRSYSCOM) Model III and the Air Force RLA methods of LORA. The two methods, compared by relating …

These sources include prominent directories of foreign-owned firms, foreign embassies, consulates and trade commissions, a variety of publications of the U.S. Department of Commerce, local chambers of commerce and …

Getting Domestic Technology Transfer On Track, Donovan O'Neil Robinson Jan 1992

Getting Domestic Technology Transfer On Track, Donovan O'Neil Robinson

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The confluence of the recession and end of the Cold War has brought the issue of technology transfer to the forefront of national debate. Each of these significant events is challenging by itself but together they are greater than the sum of the parts. At the center of technology transfer debate is the U.S. laboratory system. A de-emphasis on defense related R&D coupled with a move toward commercial applications is the predominant policy choice to strengthen America’s international competitiveness. This paper examines technology transfer from the Department of Energy to the private sector as reported in "Fossil Energy: From Laboratory …

Symmetric Noncooperative Models Of Innovation: A Simulation Study, Noel Mckinney Jan 1992

Symmetric Noncooperative Models Of Innovation: A Simulation Study, Noel Mckinney

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper examines two symmetric noncooperative models of innovation: the model by Loury (1979) and the model by Lee and Wilde (1980). In the Loury model, investment in research and development is treated as an "up front" expenditure, while in the Lee and Wilde model the investment in research and development is treated as an ongoing expenditure flow that occurs throughout the research and development process. The effect that rivalry from competing firms has on the research and development investment of a given firm is studied through simulations using the two models. The simulations show that the relationship between research …

Documentation For Economics 210 And 330, Elizabeth R. Da Costa

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

For my internship project for the M.S. degree in Economics, I propose to teach the courses Economics 210 and Economics 330 at Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio, during the Winter Quarter, 1992. Upon Dr. Iwomi's return, I shall continue teaching the Economics 210, Microeconomics course, but will assist with the Economics 330, Intermediate Microeconomics course, as necessary.

A Quarterly Income Tax Revenue Forecasting Model For The City Of Fairborn Ohio, Mark Thomas Fraley Jan 1992

A Quarterly Income Tax Revenue Forecasting Model For The City Of Fairborn Ohio, Mark Thomas Fraley

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The Fairborn econometric income tax revenue forecasting model developed establishes a connection between conditions in the local, regional, and national economy and the variance of income tax collections. The model was designed to meet as many of the criteria stated in the Foster Group's Assessment as possible, while still holding to economic theory and econometric modeling procedures. In the model, variation in the predictor variables account for 97% of the variation in income tax collections. Several statistical tests were conducted on the model to insure efficient and unbiased results.

In demonstrating the forecasting procedures for the model, assumptions for high, …

Similarities And Differences In The Adult Learner: A Comparison Of Student Perceptions Motivations And Needs By Age Cohort, Joan Elizabeth Patten Jan 1991

Similarities And Differences In The Adult Learner: A Comparison Of Student Perceptions Motivations And Needs By Age Cohort, Joan Elizabeth Patten

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The majority of literature dealing with the adult learner concept revolves around teaching methodologies or learning capabilities. While there is some literature on motivation in adult learners, the general assumption is that all those over the age of 25 are similarly motivated and share common perceptions.

To determine whether student perceptions, motivations and needs could be distinguished by age categories, survey results of 936 students at Sinclair Community College were categorized within 4 age cohorts. Results indicate that: 1) both traditionally-aged students as well as non-traditional students share some common perceptions; and 2) cohorts within the non-traditional student population may …

Promoting Export Activity In The Dayton Economy, Deena Lyn Will Jan 1991

Promoting Export Activity In The Dayton Economy, Deena Lyn Will

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The development and implementation of a mail questionnaire proved to satisfy the goal of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce to promote export activity in the region. The results of the survey indicate that over one third of the respondents to the survey are actively engaged in exporting. The identification on these firms will allow the Chamber to more effectively promote their goods and services abroad.

The manipulation of the results obtained from the survey will be used to publish a listing of companies in the Dayton area engaged in exporting goods and services to foreign countries. The resultant export …

This thesis examines the automation of the Directorate of Research and Development Contracting at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Background information on the Directorate is given along with the previous methods of producing contractual documents. The central problem of the thesis is to determine if the benefits of automating the Directorate outweigh the costs. A cost benefit analysis was used to make this determination. Each cost and each benefit is discussed in great detail along with the methodology used to measure each particular cost and benefit. The results of the study showed that the net present value of all benefits was …

U.S. Technology Transfer To China: Problems And Perspectives, Yalan Jiang Jan 1991

U.S. Technology Transfer To China: Problems And Perspectives, Yalan Jiang

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The subject of technology transfer has been an area of wide-range interest and significance for many years, especially in the recent past, as Japan and the Newly Industrialized Nations (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) have set themselves as successful examples in area of technology transfer. Recognizing the importance of technology transfer to its national economic development, China started the unprecedented movement of technology transfer along with its economic reform in the late 1970s.

Great achievements have been made in the area of agriculture, industry, science and technology, and defense. However, many problems have emerged during the process of …

Enrollment Forecasting At Sinclair Community College, Scott David O'Bryant Jan 1991

Enrollment Forecasting At Sinclair Community College, Scott David O'Bryant

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Sinclair Community College, like all institutions of higher education, has tremendous need for accurate enrollment forecasts. Until recently, using a combination of forecasting tools, the forecasts generated by the Office of Institutional Planning and Research (IPR) have been quite adequate. Recently, however, the accuracy of the enrollment predictions has waned considerably. In an effort to reverse this trend, it was decided to add another, previously untried, forecasting method to the IPR arsenal: Autoregressive Integrated Moving Averages, or ARIMA.

ARIMA models are a time series forecasting tool developed by Box and Jenkins in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After careful …

The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis Jan 1990

The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The countries of Sub-Saharan Africa have experienced both poor economic performance and substantial political instability since their independence. There have been numerous studies investigating the possible relationship between political instability and economic growth. The common approach to investigating this relationship is to measure the effect of economic growth on the probability of political instability. This paper takes the opposite approach by investigating the effects of political instability on economic growth. We believe that political instability disrupts the economic system causing a reduction in growth. We measure this effect using regression analysis to estimate two models we have developed. The first …

European Unemployment And Economic Trends: 1985-89, Ramez M. Fihani Jan 1990

European Unemployment And Economic Trends: 1985-89, Ramez M. Fihani

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This report analyzes the macroeconomic conditions for 15 OECD European countries for the second half of the 1980's. The study methodology begins by comparing Europe's aggregate economic performance against that of the United States and Japan for the 1985-89 period. A concentrated effort is made to analyze and explain the factors causing the comparatively high European unemployment rates. The report also reviews various political and economic sources to document the recent trends of 1985, 1986, and three quarters of 1987 for each of the following 15 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, …

Mergers, Acquisitions And Their Relationship With Urban Hierarchy, Michael C. Carroll Jan 1990

Mergers, Acquisitions And Their Relationship With Urban Hierarchy, Michael C. Carroll

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This report analyzes the effects of merger and acquisition activity on urban hierarchy. This paper shows that firms from larger metropolitan areas are more often the predator in a merger and acquisition transaction. The larger the metropolitan area the stronger these tendencies. The analytical tool of logistic regression is used to calculate the log likelihoods and odds ratios. The paper concludes with an examination of the possible adverse complications resulting from the M&A trend.

Ncr Personal Computer Forecast, Sharon Renee Clark Jan 1990

Ncr Personal Computer Forecast, Sharon Renee Clark

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Based on my forecasting model, NCR Corporation's domestic Personal Computer (PC) quarterly revenue can be expected to increase to between fifty-eight million dollars and seventy- three million. These quarterly forecasts may overestimate revenue during the expected coming recession since data was not available during such a similar time period in the past. All of the data is from 1984 to the present - a time in which the U.S. economy enjoyed continued slow growth. Although the quarterly forecasts are derived from a reliable econometric model, the uncertainty of the Gulf Crisis and coming recession are not represented in these statistical …

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This report contains information about the implications of Ohio Senate Bill 140 which will go into effect in 1993. It contains comparisons of ten center city schools in the form of articles specifically directed at each of those cities. Parental choice will produce profound changes in school finance and hopefully will improve the quality of educational outputs. Highlighted is the need for better information that the currently designed system will be unable to fulfill. The goal of this report is to delineate the issues for both parents and policy makers.
