JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University congratulates the alumni, faculty and students of Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music Studies who received 2018 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards.
Current ETSU graduate student and Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Studies alumna Aynsley Porchak received an Instrumentalist of the Year Momentum Award.
Alumna Becky Buller and alumnus and Program Director Dan Boner received an IBMA award for their work on “Speakin’ to That Mountain,” which won for Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year.

JOHNSON CITY — The George L. Carter Railroad Museum at East Tennessee State University will feature the railroads of the South on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Heritage Days program, scheduled on the final Saturday of each month, will present not only the legendary Southern Railway, but the many lines of the Southeast, from the Carolinas to Florida and outward to New Orleans.

JOHNSON CITY – Folk Soul Revival will perform at East Tennessee State University in a tailgate concert on Saturday, Oct. 6, in conjunction with the university’s Homecoming festivities.
The free public concert will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Pepsi/Buctainment stage in parking lot 21 behind Warf-Pickel Hall.

Meet Travis Long
Travis Long, a senior Midway Honors Scholar, transferred to ETSU from Walters State Community College with an associate degree in business administration and certificate in general education. The management major with a concentration in general management commutes to ETSU from his home in Morristown, where he works full time at Carousel Pets as a shift leader. Twenty-three faculty, staff, and students for the ETSU Department of Geosciences and Gray Fossil Site attend the 2018 Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is the largest number of attendees from ETSU to such an event. The conference took place October 17-20 and hosted symposiums, workshops, and presentations throughout the week. JOHNSON CITY – “Graveyard” is the theme for October in East Tennessee State University’s “Re-Generation: A Johnson City Story Slam” series.
This free public Story Slam, part of the ongoing series for the 2018-19 academic year, will be held Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. at JRH Brewing, 458 W. Walnut St. Donations at the door are welcome.

BFA sculpture alum Brooke Day recently received a honorable mention from the International Sculpture Center as a 2018 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture. Day was chosen from 354 students from over 138 colleges and universities, world-wide. The jury reviewed more than 786 images of student art work to make their selections for these prestigious awards. She will also be recognized in the 2018 October issue of Sculpture magazine.
