For the next several weeks, admissions counselors from East Tennessee State University will set up tents in parks, pavilions and other outdoor and indoor spaces across Tennessee as well as Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky. JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 3, 2020) – The George L. Carter Railroad Museum has reopened to the public under specific health guidelines instituted by East Tennessee State University.
The museum, located in the Campus Center Building, is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All visitors are required to wear masks while on the ETSU campus and in its buildings, including the railroad museum. Directional signage is posted throughout the museum to promote physical distancing and for safe traffic flow inside the galleries and corridors. All frequently touched surfaces are routinely disinfected for added safety.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 2020) – A longtime East Tennessee State University music educator received two awards during a ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 17, that he had not been able to receive earlier due to COVID-19 restrictions, but he also received a surprise honor when university officials unveiled a special honor from the Tennessee legislature.
Dr. Benjamin D. Caton III retired from the university earlier this year after serving his alma mater as a professor of piano in the Department of Music for 46 years.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 1, 2020) – Researchers from East Tennessee State University are part of an international team of scientists from Europe, South America and the United States who have published a paper on new insights to how the human immune system recognizes the pathogenic fungus Candida auris.
Candida auris, which first surfaced in 2009, is resistant to many standard anti-fungal therapies and is not easy to diagnose. JOHNSON CITY – Faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine have received more than $7 million in extramural funding so far this year to conduct research ranging from substance misuse to kidney disease.
The grant proposals were funded by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health; the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke; the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; the National Institute on Drug Abuse; and the American Heart Association.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 1, 2020) – The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) named Dr. Judy Rice, associate professor at East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing, among 230 distinguished nurse leaders to join the 2020 Class of Fellows.
The inductees will be recognized for their significant contributions to health and health care at the Academy’s annual Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference, taking place virtually October 29-31.

JOHNSON CITY – Applications for the 2021 Legislative Internship Program in the Tennessee General Assembly are available in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Political Science, International Affairs and Public Administration.
The internship is open to undergraduate students in political science, public administration, law, history, economics, sociology, social work, journalism and related fields who have completed 60 credit hours and have at least a 3.0 overall grade point average. JOHNSON CITY – (August 31, 2020) Reilly Wells, a senior at University School, was notified that she earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT exam.
Fewer than half of 1% of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2019, only 4,879 out of nearly 1.8 million students who took the ACT earned a top composite score of 36.

JOHNSON CITY (Aug. 26, 2020) – East Tennessee State University received one of seven Rural Health Research Center grants, awarded by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, to create the Rural Health Equity Research Center.
The $2.77 million award, which ETSU won in collaboration with the NORC Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis, part of NORC at the University of Chicago, spans four years.

JOHNSON CITY (Aug. 21, 2020) – East Tennessee State University bestowed its highest honors upon three professors today with the presentation of the 2020 Distinguished Faculty Awards for Teaching, Research and Service.
