Multiple campus walking tours are offered weekdays for groups of 12 or fewer, each led by an Expedition Leader. JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 13, 2020) – Three members of the East Tennessee State University College of Nursing have received a $20,000 grant that will allow them to implement an evidence-based suicide prevention program at four Health Wagon clinics in rural Appalachia.
Dr. Christine Mullins, Dr. Teresa Carnevale, and Dr. Vallire Hooper were the 2020 recipients of the Sigma Theta Tau International/American Nurses Credentialing Center Evidence-Based Practice Implementation Grant awarded by Sigma Theta Tau International, a global honor society for nurses.

JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 12, 2020) – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Chuanfu Li a $2.19 million R01 grant to research the role of lactate in sepsis-induced cardiovascular dysfunction.
Li is a professor in the Department of Surgery at Quillen College of Medicine and is also a member of the ETSU Center of Excellence in Inflammation, Infectious Disease, and Immunity (CIIDI). He was recently named one of the inaugural Quillen Distinguished Research Fellows.

JOHNSON CITY – (Oct. 12, 2020) A program at East Tennessee State University that prepares students with intellectual disabilities for meaningful employment has received a $2.5 million boost from the U.S. Department of Education.
Access ETSU is a two-year, non-degree program for individuals with intellectual disabilities who are seeking to enhance their academic, career development and social skills and experiences in a way that is identical to their peers at the university. Participants attend classes, participate in internships and have access to the same activities and services as other ETSU students.

JOHNSON CITY (October 9, 2020)– East Tennessee State University is creating a series of “ETSU Meet-Ups” to encourage safe, in-person, interactive gatherings among students on campus in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
These events are designed for and by students with social distancing and university COVID-19 guidelines in mind. JOHNSON CITY – (Oct. 1, 2020) Four seniors at University School on the East Tennessee State University campus have been named semifinalists for the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
These students will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $30 million that will be offered in spring 2021.

JOHNSON CITY – The East Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will present a Lunchtime Outdoor Concert on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 12:15 p.m.
The concert will be performed at the concrete pad adjacent to Burleson Hall and the Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome) and across Sherrod Drive from Brown Hall.

De’Kliah Kelly, a sophomore from Chattanooga, is an Honors-in-Discipline in History student with a second major in anthropology. Kelly applied to a number of schools, but the tipping points that led her to choose ETSU were its classical studies minor and its Summer Bridge Program, which provides incoming African American, Hispanic and Native American students a solid foundation before they start their freshman year. Early in the pandemic, ETSU Health worked to established the region’s first drive-through COVID-19 testing site. This site was instrumental in detecting the first cases of community spread in the area. Currently, ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine is conducting vital research on COVID-19 using blood samples from local patients who have recovered from the disease.

Special trains headed to Florida and other vacation destinations displayed advertisements such as “Come to the Sunshine” to lure travelers in the northern areas of New York, Chicago and Detroit where the cold winds of winter would drive thousands of passengers to travel South. JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 30, 2020) – Dr. Brian Maxson, a professor of history at East Tennessee State University, has published an article in the internationally respected journal, Bullettino dell’Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medioevo.
Published in Rome, Bullettino features peer-reviewed work on medieval and Renaissance Italy from leading scholars from around the world.
Maxson’s article, “The Letters of Giannozzo Manetti,” constructs the first-ever synthetic treatment of the 45 surviving Italian and Latin letters written to or from Manetti, who was one of the most important intellectuals and statesmen in the early Italian Renaissance.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 29, 2020) – Dr. Tosin Ariyo, a member of East Tennessee State University’s Center for Applied Research and Evaluation in Women’s Health (CARE Women’s Health), has been awarded a 2020 Changemakers in Family Planning grant from the Society for Family Planning.
