The contribution of market structure to the success of an electronic marketplace (e-marketplace) is an issue that has not received a great deal of attention in the literature. Although, researchers have given some attention to the antecedents of successful e-marketplace participation by organizations,there has been relatively little attention given to the e-marketplace structures. In this paper, the issue of e-marketplace strategy and its relationship withe-marketplace structure is examined. A classification of e-marketplace strategies is presented. In Australia, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly rural SMEs, are perceived as being on the wrong side of the digital divide. Government at local and state levels has taken a leading role in the development of electronic marketplaces with an aim of improving SME participation. Many government departments now either own or sponsor electronic marketplaces. The aims of government agencies in creating e-marketplaces are often motivated by regional economic development issues. A Proposed Model To Evaluate The Benefits Of Government Sponsored Regional Electronic Marketplaces For Smes: Extending The Updated Delone & Mclean Is Success Model, Denise Gengatharen, Craig Standing

Despite a growing body of research on the benefits of Internet-based electronic marketplaces, few evaluation models have emerged to examine them. This paper proposes a conceptual model to evaluate the benefits of a government-sponsored regional e-marketplace for small and medium enterprises (SME-REM). The updated DeLone & McLean IS Success Model is extended using data from a literature review on e-marketplaces, SME participation in e-commerce and from an ongoing case study of a government-sponsored SME-REM in Western Australia. The extended model considers a longitudinal approach and the context of the evaluation in determining the net benefits of government-sponsored SME-REMs.

Abduction plays an important but often unacknowledged role in research - this regrettably leaving a large part of the research process hidden and unexamined (Levin-Rozalis 2000), particularly important innovative or creative components. This paper, firstly, introduces abduction and discusses some important concepts related to abduction and innovation. Secondly, it presents author's own re-descriptions of previous research work. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are important to most economies. To improve e-commerce uptake and often motivated by regional economic and community development issues, some governments are creating Internet-based e-marketplaces for SMEs. Given the complexities involved in creating such e-marketplaces, a conceptual framework to support their development needs to be considered. The proposed framework uses a staged approach to advise the development of government-sponsored community-portal regional e- marketplaces (CP-REMs) for SMEs. This paper reviews the concepts of virtual communities and electronic marketplaces and, in particular, their relevance for SMEs. A specific example of a Regional Electronic Marketplace (REM) using a Community Portal model is examined within this context. The authors ereview the underlying philosophy for the project and the planning which preceeded implementation. A review of the case highlights the problems which can occur and the issues which are critical for successful implementation of e-communities. finally the authors propose a model for effective virtual community implementations.

Universal fast broadband is currently being implemented by the Australian government. It is the largest single project in Australia’s history. Represented as a nation-building exercise by the government and many public and private promoters, it is vilified by others as a massive waste of taxpayers’ money. Ultimately the target of successful universal availability will require that metropolitan installations subsidize rural adoption. The take-up of these facilities, particularly in regional and remote areas, constitutes a complex, multi-factorial scenario in which political, personal, and organizational decisions are shaped by physical, cultural, economic, and ideological elements.
