Frontline Employee Empowerment: Scale Development And Validation Using Confirmatory Composite Analysis, Saradhi Motamarri, Shahriar Akter, Venkata K. Yanamandram

Sydney Business School - Papers

Empowerment has been argued as a viable strategy to enable frontline employees (FLEs) to manage the complexities of service encounters. Organisations must cascade insights from analytics to frontlines for dynamic (re)bundling of service elements while serving customers. However, very little is known on how FLEs are empowered in analytics-driven services. This study addresses these research gaps, drawing on a systematic literature review and in-depth interviews (n = 30), followed by conceptualisation and validation of an empowerment scale through a pilot (n = 50) and the main study (n = 304). This research confirms empowerment as a second-order construct consisting of …

Purpose

This paper examines the relationship between human capital (HC) and value creation and employee reward. HC is an important component of intellectual capital (IC). There is growing interest in how IC can be used to create organizational value. This paper addresses the need for critical analysis of IC practices in action. Based on data gathered from three annual surveys at Australia's second largest public sector organization, the paper introduces psychological contract as new HC factors, and develops a method to measure HC in terms of value creation (work activity) and employee reward (pay). The findings have practical implications for …

The Influence Of Presenteeism On Job Satisfaction And Employee Turnover Intentions: Evidence From Bangladeshi Employees, Amlan Haque

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This study investigates the association of presenteeism with job satisfaction and employee turnover intentions. Presenteeism refers to attending work while ill and not being able to work up to full capacity. Hypotheses are tested using data from 200 full-time Bangladeshi employees with a web-based online survey. As predicted, significant negative associations were identified between presenteeism and job satisfaction as well as among job satisfaction and employee turnover intentions. A further analysis also revealed a significant positive relationship between presenteeism and employee turnover intentions. This study suggests that presenteeism is associated with job satisfaction and employee turnover intentions and should be …

Employer-Employee Congruence In Environmental Values: An Exploration Of Effects On Job Satisfaction And Creativity, Jelena Spanjol, Wing Yin Leona Tam, Vivian Tam

This study examines how the match (vs. mismatch) between personal and firm-level values regarding environmental responsibility affects employee job satisfaction and creativity and contributes to three literature streams [i.e., social corporate responsibility, creativity, and person-environment (P-E) fit]. Building on the P-E fit literature, we propose and test environmental orientation fit versus nonfit effects on creativity, identifying job satisfaction as a mediating mechanism and regulatory pressure as a moderator. An empirical investigation indicates that the various environmental orientation fit conditions affect job satisfaction and creativity differently. More specifically, environmental orientation fit produces greater job satisfaction and creativity when the employee and …

Mixed Methods To The Rescue: Addressing The Problem Of Employee Turnover Using Marital Research, Irit Alony, Helen M. Hasan, Andrew J. Sense Jan 2014

Mixed Methods To The Rescue: Addressing The Problem Of Employee Turnover Using Marital Research, Irit Alony, Helen M. Hasan, Andrew J. Sense

Sydney Business School - Papers

Decades of turnover research have identified sets of factors that lead to voluntary employee separation. However, the predictive power of existing turnover models is extremely limited, and does not go far beyond 30%. In contrast, marital research has developed a MMR tool for predicting dissolution which has an accuracy of over 90%, based on a couple's reflections on their past. This paper presents this complex prediction method in current MMR terms, and details the process of adjusting it into employment setting. The paper presents the main issues to consider when adjusting this tool, and provides a detailed description of the …

A Conceptual Framework For Understanding Responsible Leadership And Presenteeism: The Mediating Influence Of Organizational Commitment And Employee Turnover Intentions, Amlan Haque, Mario Fernando, Peter Caputi Jan 2014

A Conceptual Framework For Understanding Responsible Leadership And Presenteeism: The Mediating Influence Of Organizational Commitment And Employee Turnover Intentions, Amlan Haque, Mario Fernando, Peter Caputi

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Presenteeism refers to reduced productivity caused by employees' ill health. Presenteeism has a substantial impact on productivity and imposes a significant economic burden to businesses and national economies. In 2010, presenteeism costed the Australian economy $AUD 34.1 and the United States economy $USD180 billion. The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework supporting the relationship between perceived responsible leadership and presenteeism, and the mediating role of organizational commitment and employee turnover intentions. Implications of this conceptual framework are discussed both in terms of future research directions and intervention strategies.

Hrm At The Coalface: Employee Responses To Performance Appraisal At An Underground Coalmine, Peter D. Mclean, James Reveley

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Based on a four year empirical study investigating employee responses to the implementation of a performance appraisal (PA) process in an underground coal mine, this paper contributes to the small but growing body of literature that examines employee responses to HRM interventions. The paper is constructed around seven key research questions recentring the employee as the discursive subject of HRM. A careful interrogation of employee responses to having their performance appraised indicates that this individuating HRM process occasions considerable disruption to miners’ occupational selves and leads to unintended consequences for the miners, for their working relationships, and for their contributions …

Qualitative Case Study Research: A Research Project On Employee Participation In The Malaysian Private Sector, Balakrishnan Parasuraman

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Employee participation is one of the important fields in industrial relations. Research on employee participation in Malaysia is usually conducted through large-scale surveys and quasi-experiments and only focuses on the public sector. Therefore, this research instead uses a qualitative case study approach in investigating employee participation practices in private sector companies in Malaysia. This paper discusses aspects of the methodology of case study research and qualitative data collection and the theory and arguments affecting the choice of research and data gathering strategy in this research. Concludes that carrying out qualitative case study research, in the author's experience, is first and …
