Whether they admit it or not, our organizations are in trouble and face an uncertain future. The world in which they operate is changing rapidly and fundamentally yet the majority of our current organizational leaders continue to be command-control driven and to operate in much the same way as they have done since taken the helm. Paradoxically, this organizational vulnerability is also occurring at a time when generational diversity has the potential to exert the greatest influence over the course of an organization’s development and generate the leadership so needed to help it weather the storms ahead.

Finding a job can be difficult. Finding your calling is much harder but the rewards are many. The author shows how the Heroic Journey Model is currently used to inspire both students and adults in organizational contexts to find and follow their passion. Based in narrative and imagery, individuals are encouraged to explore their potential and set Personal Strategic Plans to achieve their goals. Using a mythic methodology can give encouragement and insight into protecting individual creative capacity – our most valuable resource to ensure a viable and sustainable future.

Stories Of Informal Mentorship: Recognizing The Voices Of Mentees In Academic Libraries, Colleen Mackinnon, Susan Shepley

Based on the 2014 OLA Super Conference session “Mentorship in Academic Libraries: A Universe of Possibilities,” this article explores the benefits of informal mentorship in its various forms and how librarians are embracing a new way of thinking about mentorship both individually and organizationally. The lived experiences of two professional academic librarians are shared as they argue that informal mentorship offers the opportunity to co-create a meaningful mentorship experience by recognizing the importance of the mentee’s voice.
