Volunteer Satisfaction And Intent To Remain: An Analysis Of Contributing Factors Among Professional Golf Event Volunteers, Gina Pauline

Gina Pauline

Sport events are increasingly reliant on episodic volunteers for the successful delivery of an event. As there continues to exist a surge in the organization of sporting events coupled with the demand for volunteers, event organizers must concern themselves with utilizing the appropriate recruitment and retention strategies. In an effort to do this, one must understand the points of satisfaction for volunteers as well as factors influencing their future intentions to volunteer. While there exists a plethora of research to understand the motivation of volunteers, exploring the antecedents of volunteer satisfaction as well as intent to remain has been limited. …

Dr Deogratias Harorimana

The purpose of this paper is to critically assess the effectiveness of Fiscal and Monetary Policies in the South Pacific Island Countries. Locating Sociological Concepts In Business Games, Dylan Kissane, Helen Roux-Fontaine Oct 2011

Locating Sociological Concepts In Business Games, Dylan Kissane, Helen Roux-Fontaine

Dylan Kissane

"This article describes one strategy for demonstrating the value of sociological concepts to business students by adopting a cross-discipline approach to a business game at a French-American business school. This strategy proved effective in allowing a social science professor to demonstrate the practical implications of two concepts – gender and race – to undergraduate students while simultaneously allowing an international management professor to demonstrate how cross-cultural teams should be managed in order to work effectively. This article first explains the Ecotonos business game; secondly, it explains the crucial debriefing process for the business game and demonstrates how sociological concepts can …

Analysis Of Co-Movements Between The Capital Markets In Brazil And The United States, Daniel Reed Bergmann, Wesley Mendes-Da-Silva

Wesley Mendes-Da-Silva

In this article copula theory is used to analyze the co-movements between the Brazilian and American capital markets. To formulate an effective asset allocation strategy, it is important to understand extreme events – both positive (booms) and negative (crashes) – and their effects on markets. The market indexes used are the Ibovespa and the S&P 500, covering the period from March 2001 to April 2007. We tested the adherence to the log-returns of the main copulas found in the financial literature, using the following criteria: log-likelihood, Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion. The results show that the symmetrized Joe-Clayton …

Mid-Life Crisis, Transition And The Propensity To Embark Upon Entrepreneurship, Murray Hunter Oct 2011

Mid-Life Crisis, Transition And The Propensity To Embark Upon Entrepreneurship, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

This paper looks at mid-life crisis and transformation. According to erikson, people go through life and often find regret, remorse, and depression about their achievement and existence in life. The potential for transformation occurs when people evaluate their self concept and find dissappointment with what they see. People cope with this dissappointment by living out their fantasies and typologies defined and described by O'Conner as the Farmer, the Nurseryman, the helper, the Writer, and the Drop-out. Finally this paper hypothesizes that mid-life crisis is not confined to one period of life and this transformation can occur during any period of …

The Continuum Of Psychotic Organizational Typologies, Murray Hunter Oct 2011

The Continuum Of Psychotic Organizational Typologies, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

The paper discusses the influence on our perceptions from the basic psychotic disposition of organizations. Cognitive distortion is influenced by the psychotic traits of an organization along a continuum of various states which include paranoia, obsessive-compulsive, dramatic, depressive, schizoid, and narcissistic tendencies. These tendencies may be of assistance in the early start-up phases of a firm but overtime distort perceptions and behaviour of the organization through the defense mechanisms they develop. The psychotic continuum is a worthy paradigm through which to view organizational opportunity, strategy, operations, and decision making, potentially capable of assisting in diagnosing the causes of organization disfunction.

The Economics Of Network Neutrality, Nicholas Economides, Benjamin E. Hermalin Oct 2011

The Economics Of Network Neutrality, Nicholas Economides, Benjamin E. Hermalin

Benjamin E. Hermalin

Pricing of Internet access has been characterized by two properties: Parties are directly billed only by the Internet service provider (ISP) through which they connect to the Internet. Pricing, moreover, is not contingent on the type of content being transmitted. These properties define a regime known as “network neutrality.” In 2005, some large ISPs proposed that application and content providers directly pay them additional fees for accessing the ISPs’ residential clients, as well as differential fees for prioritizing certain content. We analyze the private and social incentives to introduce such fees when the network is congested and more traffic implies …

Capital Account Liberalization, Financial Development And Industry Growth: A Synthetic View, Rachita Gullapalli, Barry Eichengreen, Ugo Panizza Oct 2011

Capital Account Liberalization, Financial Development And Industry Growth: A Synthetic View, Rachita Gullapalli, Barry Eichengreen, Ugo Panizza

Rachita Gullapalli

This paper synthesizes studies analyzing the effects of capital account liberalization on industry growth while controlling for financial crises, domestic financial development and the strength of institutions. We find evidence that financial openness has positive effects on the growth of financially dependent industries, although these growth-enhancing effects evaporate during financial crises. Further analysis indicates that the positive effects of capital account liberalization are limited to countries with relatively well-developed financial systems, good accounting standards, strong creditor rights and rule of law. It suggests that countries must reach a certain threshold in terms of institutional and economic development before they can …

The Relationship Development And Learning Organization Dimensions., Yuhfen Diana H. Wu, Connie K. Haley Dr.

Diana H. Wu

This research examined the relationship among learning organization dimensions, leadership development, employee development, and their interactions with two demographic variables (gender and ethnicity) in the context of libraries. The researchers conducted a multivariate analysis of the variance to assess the differences by leadership training groups (low training hours vs. high training hours), or by gender; and by workplace training groups (low vs. high), or by ethnicity (white vs. all others) on a linear combination of the seven dimensions of the learning organization. A conclusive summary is provided along with contributive discussion. Implications and contributions to librarians are discussed in addition …

Spend Your Money On Income Generating Activities Rather Than Liabilities, George E. Ekeha

Many at times as I walk around town, in the cities and the country sides I try to observe how we live our lives in Ghana. In my previous article, I highlight some very important resources that we are endowed with in this country. We all know that those are just but few and we are proud that we have more resources than some of our neighbours in the Sub-Saharan African countries. One of these resources is the human capital. We can be proud of ourselves to have people who think about the necessity of peace in order to enhance …

Savings Habits Of African Women, The Case Of Ghanaian Market Women, George E. Ekeha

George E Ekeha

Recent economic developments in Africa have led to increased educational opportunities and new jobs for the millions of people living in the continent. Specifically, the development changes have had a significant impact on the female population in the member countries as more and more women continue to gain access to training and education and obtain the skills and qualifications needed to enter into the workforce. Due to these recent developments, women in Africa have been able to gain more control over their own finances. As a result, women entrepreneurs in most African countries have become increasingly important drivers of growth …

Public Policy Instruments In (Re)Building National Innovation Capabilities: Cases Of Nanotechnology Development In China, Russia And Brazil, Evgeny A. Klochikhin Sep 2011

Public Policy Instruments In (Re)Building National Innovation Capabilities: Cases Of Nanotechnology Development In China, Russia And Brazil, Evgeny A. Klochikhin

Evgeny A. Klochikhin

In 2001 Goldman Sachs named Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs) the most rapidly-growing countries in the world capable of surpassing the United States, Japan and Europe as leading economies by 2050.

Nevertheless, for the last decade we have learned relatively little about the mechanisms of success and failure in these countries. All of them have huge territory and population as well as fast-growing economies that sometimes show two-digit rates of GDP growth per year and surprise the world by their increasing budgets and public spending. In the meantime, most of these countries are believed to be desperately struggling against …

A Critique Of Mark Lemley’S “The Myth Of The Sole Inventor”, John Howells, Ron D. Katznelson Sep 2011

A Critique Of Mark Lemley’S “The Myth Of The Sole Inventor”, John Howells, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

In a forthcoming article in the Michigan Law Review, Professor Mark Lemley advances a thesis that “the canonical story of the lone genius inventor is largely a myth” and describes a selection of pioneer inventions to support his thesis. We show that Lemley has many of his facts wrong. We examine his assertions and set the record straight in the pioneer invention cases of Edison, the Wright brothers, the Selden automobile patent vis a vis Ford, Watt and the steam engine and Fleming and penicillin. We are concerned with the errors in alleged historical and legal facts in what Lemley …

The Human Computer Interaction Issues Associated With The Creation Of Personalized Role Playing Simulations, Eileen O'Donnell, Catherine Mulwa, Mary Sharp, Vincent Wade

Eileen O'Donnell

The human computer interaction issues associated with the creation of personalized role playing simulations are discussed in this paper. This paper is aimed at those who are interested in building authoring applications which enable educators to build role playing simulated e-learning resources to use with their students. One of the main issues which have come to our attention is that many learning designers and educators do not understand what exactly it is we are trying to achieve by creating personalized role playing simulations. Also, how to gauge the pedagogic merits which can be achieved by using these e-learning resources. Potential …

Feasibility Assessment For Tourism Development In Persian Gulf (A Case Study Of Hendourabi Island), Mohammad Hossein Imani Khoshkhoo, Mehrdad Karami

mohammad hossein imani khoshkhoo

ABSTRACT Today, tourism industry is one of the fields that give diversity to the countries' economy. Whereas, according to investigations of the Global Tourism Organization, tourism is a key to development in many developing and less developed countries. On the other hand, a brief review of the economical planning of our (Iran's) neighbors and their general focus on tourism as one of the most important sectors of economy, further confirms the need to pay more strict attention to this competitive market. Therefore, it seems necessary to expand the tourism market of these islands and remove their deprivations via canonizing facilities …
