Human Asset Accounting : Strategic Lessons For Quoted Firms In Nigeria, Chukwumah Lawyer Obara Dr

Lawyer Obara

This study examines human asset accounting (HM) treatments in firms quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) . It is intended to strategically determine the effects of passive and constructive HM practices on the corporate profitability of quoted firms in Nigeria. Drawing from the Nigerian Stock Exchange Fad Book (2006), 207 quoted firms constitute the study population. Research questionnaire was administered on sampled 136 quoted firms, out of which submissions from 100 (73.5%) were timely returned and expediently adopted for analysis. The main decisional statistical index for test of hypotheses is represented by coefficient of determination (tf). The findings clearly …

Using Spectrum Auctions To Enhance Competition In Wireless Services, Peter Cramton, Evan Kwerel, Gregory Rosston, Andrzej Skrzypacz1

Peter Cramton

Spectrum auctions are used by governments to assign and price licenses for wireless communications. Effective auction design recognizes the importance of competition, not only in the auction, but in the downstream market for wireless communications. This paper examines several instruments regulators can use to enhance competition and thereby improve market outcomes.

Knowledge Management And Transfers Between North And South Korea At The Kaesong Industrial Complex, Jeffrey L. Gower Jan 2011

Knowledge Management And Transfers Between North And South Korea At The Kaesong Industrial Complex, Jeffrey L. Gower

Jeffrey L Gower

The countries of North Korea and South Korea entered into an agreement in 2002 to develop a Special Economic Zone in the Kaesong Industrial Region of North Korea. The resultant Kaesong Industrial Complex, or KIC, was designed to attract South Korean investment and supply South Korean firms with inexpensive North Korean labor to be directed with South Korean management, in return for hard currency payment of land rents and employment for North Korean workers. Other KIC competitive advantages include proximity to the Seoul consumer market and a workforce that speaks a common language. However, North Korean labor had little experience …

Polymeros Chrysochou

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to explore the differences in behaviour between heavy and light wine buyers. This is conducted by comparing heavy and light buyers of wine in terms of their repertoires including the size, purchase frequency and market shares across brands, as well as loyalty exhibited towards particular wine attributes.

Design/methodology/approach: Using panel data of wine purchases in the UK for each buyer group (light and heavy) market shares and loyalty to wine attributes were examined. The polarisation index φ (phi) was used as a measure of loyalty.

Findings: The light buyers’ market share for small …

Adaptive Responses To Flooding Incidents In Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, Habiba I. Jimoh, Kayode A. Iroye

Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria

Incidents of floods which are mainly caused by changes in landuse is fast becoming a city life experience in Ilorin as in most urban centres in Nigeria causing untold hardships and sometimes loss of lives. This extreme hydro-meteorological event is also being exacerbated by climate change which thus calls for adaptive response by residents towards reducing its risks, hence this study. Data used were generated from direct field measurements and questionnaire administration. Descriptive statistics and cross tabulations were used in analyzing the data. Results obtained indicate that most respondents use a wide range of non-structural adaptive response to flood. The …

Scoring Rules And Decision Analysis Education, J. Eric Bickel Jan 2011

Scoring Rules And Decision Analysis Education, J. Eric Bickel

Eric Bickel

Experiential learning is perhaps the most effective way to teach. One example is the scoring procedure used for exams in some decision analysis programs. Under this grading scheme, students take a multiple-choice exam, but rather than simply marking which answer they think is correct, they must assign a probability to each possible answer. The exam is then scored with a special scoring rule, under which students’ best strategy is to avoid guessing and instead assign their true beliefs. Such a scoring function is known as a strictly proper scoring rule. In this paper, we discuss several different scoring rules and …

Discretization, Simulation, And Swanson’S (Inaccurate) Mean, J. Eric Bickel Jan 2011

Discretization, Simulation, And Swanson’S (Inaccurate) Mean, J. Eric Bickel

Eric Bickel

Swanson’s Mean (SM) is heavily used within the oil and gas industry to approximate continuous probability distributions such as the lognormal. In this paper, we document the errors induced by this practice, which, as we show, has no theoretical justification for any distribution other than the normal. In parallel, we review methods to discretize continuous distributions and compare these methods to Monte Carlo simulation. We demonstrate that the best discretization methods have an accuracy equivalent to that of tens of thousands of Monte Carlo trials.

Comparing Nws Pop Forecasts To Third-Party Providers, J. Eric Bickel, Eric Floehr, Seong Dae Kim Jan 2011

Comparing Nws Pop Forecasts To Third-Party Providers, J. Eric Bickel, Eric Floehr, Seong Dae Kim

Eric Bickel

In this paper, the authors verify probability of precipitation (PoP) forecasts provided by the National Weather Service (NWS), The Weather Channel (TWC), and CustomWeather (CW). The n-day-ahead forecasts, where n ranges from 1 to 3 for the NWS, from 1 to 9 for TWC, and from 1 to 14 for CW, are analyzed. The dataset includes almost 13 million PoP forecasts, or about 500 000 PoPs per provider per day of lead time. Data were collected over a 2-yr period (1 November 2008–31 October 2010) at 734 observation stations across the contiguous United States. In addition to verifying these PoP …

Towards Critical Medical Practice: Nursing Practice And An Emr System, Dirk Postma Jan 2011

Towards Critical Medical Practice: Nursing Practice And An Emr System, Dirk Postma

Dirk Postma

A focus on critique as a form of theory within critical management studies (CMS) and critical information systems research (CISR) leads to concerns about the impact of critique on the transformation of practice and about the active role of practitioners. The emphasis on theory also prevents insight into the heterogeneous nature of critical practices. This paper develops a posthumanist approach to critique. A case is analysed where an electronic medical record (EMR) information system is introduced in a hospital. The focus is on tracing the effect of this system on the work of nurses. It is shown how the system …

Sport Sovereignty At Bay: The Impact Of Globalization And The Multi-National Sport Enterprise On The Westphalian-Based International Sport Structure, Rick Burton, Matthew Robinson, Emir Turam Jan 2011

Sport Sovereignty At Bay: The Impact Of Globalization And The Multi-National Sport Enterprise On The Westphalian-Based International Sport Structure, Rick Burton, Matthew Robinson, Emir Turam

Rick Burton

The existing framework for international sport is based on the guiding principles of the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. The Peace of Westphalia promoted sovereignty, self-determination, equality between states, and non-intervention of one state in the internal affairs of another state, and it has served as the basis for international relations for several centuries. Vernon observed that “the advanced world, carried ebulliently on the crest of a technological revolution in transportation and communication, has absentmindedly set up a virile system of international institutions and relationships that sit alongside the system of nation-states.” Vernon’s observation captures the essence of the existing …

Regional Differences In Fan Preferences For Minor League Hockey: The Ahl, Rodney Paul, Robert Chatt Jan 2011

Regional Differences In Fan Preferences For Minor League Hockey: The Ahl, Rodney Paul, Robert Chatt

Rodney J. Paul

Regional differences in fan preferences for minor league hockey in the United States are explored using simple linear regression models. The top-level minor league for the NHL, the American Hockey League (AHL), was studied for the 2008-09 season. Key attributes with respect to attendance are studied for hockey including population, income per capita, promotions, scoring, and winning percentage. In addition, a key socio-economic variable, fighting is also investigated. Major differences are found for fan preferences across geographic regions in relation to population, income per capita, a variety of promotions, and team success. In addition, fan reaction to fighting tends to …

The Role Of Family-Friendly Benefits On Job Self-Efficacy And Organizational Commitment Of Public Park And Recreation Professionals, Michael A. Mulvaney Jan 2011

The Role Of Family-Friendly Benefits On Job Self-Efficacy And Organizational Commitment Of Public Park And Recreation Professionals, Michael A. Mulvaney

Michael A. Mulvaney

The number of dual-career couples, workers with eldercare responsibility, single-parent families, and working parents with young children has become increasingly common in the American workplace (Breaugh & Frye, 2008) and has led to increased work-family conflicts for the park and recreation professional. In response to these workforce changes, family-friendly employee benefits programs (FFEBP) are becoming more readily available and offered by public park and recreation agencies. Guided by these challenges, this study sought to explore the link between FFEBP and job attitudes (organizational commitment) and employee motivation (self-efficacy) among public park and recreation employees. Specifically, the effects of two FFEBP …
