Eco-Illusions: Unveiling Greenwashing Techniques On Corporate Social Media, Madeline B. Davis

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

As the climate crisis continues, businesses are becoming savvier with how they communicate their environmental impact to their audiences. Greenwashing, the act of making unsubstantiated claims about the environmental friendliness of products, is becoming more popular amongst unsustainable corporations. Past research shows that companies are using specific techniques to deceive consumers. By conducting a content analysis of five corporate Instagram accounts from companies with past greenwashing allegations, this research used four main criteria to categorize greenwashed posts: color palette recurrent language, pleasant nature imagery, and vague appeals. Vague appeals were most commonly used online. Understanding how companies are perpetuating greenwashing …

Exposing Endo: Labor Abuse And Exploitation On Contractual Workers In The Philippines, Olivia M. Fisher Jan 2023

Exposing Endo: Labor Abuse And Exploitation On Contractual Workers In The Philippines, Olivia M. Fisher

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

Article 281 states that workers must be put on a probationary period for 6 months of employment before receiving benefits. ENDO-contracting is the situation where corporations hire workers on 5 to 6-month contracts to avoid paying their workers benefits. This research will be conducted using qualitative data from past research publications, court cases, and interviewing anti-ENDO advocates. The historical summary will explain the origins of this law and how it has progressed into common labor practice. ENDO- contracting disproportionately affects the low-wage workforce and deprives them of regular employee benefits. The lack of these benefits has created poor working conditions …

Female Lawyers Don’T Need Pity; They Need A Paycheck, Meagan S. Bilodeau

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

Whether it's pity or patronization female lawyers have often been criticized. They're visualized on the lower level of the patriarchal hierarchy system in the Hollywood courtroom. However, women that hold emotional intelligence don't need pity. Emotional intelligence encompasses how to set boundaries, stay motivated, hold healthy relationships inside and outside the courtroom, as well as maintain self-regulation. Through analysis of the biographical films Erin Brockovich, On the Basis of Sex, and The Mauritanian this study explores how extensively psychological resilience subfactors are depicted, proving whether or not female lawyers are emotionally prepared to succeed in their noteworthy cases.

He, She, We: Gender Impacts In Teamwork, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

It is well known that organizational teams are highly valued in work settings (Marquis, 2019). Some research has shown gender differences such as "team collaboration is greatly improved by the presence of women in the group" (Baer & Woolley, 2011). Other studies support mixed gender teams as advantageous (Sachiko & Takeda, 2014). This paper will review the perceptions of gender contributions in teams from the literature and report on a study of current business students in a liberal arts university. Some comparisons are made to the author's 2017 survey on gender effects in team projects in the same school.

Maximizing Shareholder Wealth And Stakeholder Value Through Benefit Corporations: Doing Good And Doing Well, Arlene J. Nicholas, Samuel A. Sacco

The Benefit Corporation's legal and performance standards help ensure market growth, valuation, impact, and integrity (Neubauer, 2016). This paper examines the evolution of Benefit Corporations and some of the legal differences between traditional for-profit corporations including related court cases. The authors provide a business rationale in support of conscientious for-profit organizations. How a company can become a Benefit Corporation and the value added will be discussed.

Management And Telework, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Managers may be concerned with employee accessibility, productivity and possible loss of management roles (Arnold, 2006). When Yahoo CEO Marissa Meyer banned working from home, it was described as a step backward that countered studies of increased productivity, retention and job satisfaction that could demoralize the workers (Cohan, 2013; Gaudreau, 2013). An overview of benefits, incentives, organizational examples as well as possible deterrents and management resistance are identified.

For example, according to Gault, Leach, and Duey (2010) interns who exceeded employers' expectations were offered a 9.2% higher salary than other non-intern alumni counterparts. Employers of students who complete credit internships are required to respond to a questionnaire about the students work. However, like many other universities and colleges, students were not required to complete formal surveys of their internship. Overview of student surveys regarding their experiences and academic associations is discussed. The benefits of electronic documentation for outcomes and assessment is explained.

This thesis covers the rise of Twitter, and how fashion designers, specifically Diane Von Furstenberg, Nanette Lepore, and Tory Burch, use Twitter and for what purpose. Junior Mints And Their Bigger Than Bite-Size Role In Complicating Product Placement Assumptions, Stephanie Savage

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

This thesis examines the various complications of product placement within television given the general assumption that it always paid for as a means of advertising. Using the popular television sitcom Seinfeld and the infamous 1993 episode, “The Junior Mint,” as an example of non-paid product placement, it is herein argued that the use of this practice should be examined on an individual basis. Furthermore, this thesis seeks to clarify the misassumptions that most people have by arguing against critics who, in defining product placement, often fail to mention any instances in which it is not paid for. Various examples of …

Generational Perceptions - Workers And Consumers, Arlene J. Nicholas Oct 2009

Generational Perceptions - Workers And Consumers, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Today’s workers and consumers consist of four generations of individuals raised with very different technologies and lifestyles. According to Murphy (2007), “different perspectives on issues like work ethic, leadership, and authority can cause conflict, frustration, and misunderstanding if not managed well” (p.18). In a recent “World of Work Survey” (2008), the older and younger generations noted little or no interaction with the other. Working with and learning from one another, as well as knowing what appeals to the generations as consumers, is critical for organizations. Understanding these differences will enable improved communications for the workforce and the consumer.

The Injustice Of Justice: The Pursuit Of A Harmonious, Just, And Merciful World, Robert W. Boyle Apr 2009

The Injustice Of Justice: The Pursuit Of A Harmonious, Just, And Merciful World, Robert W. Boyle

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

There is no one universal definition of Justice. Such a limited view of right and wrong conflicts with our infinitely diverse world. The key to a harmonious global community is that justice is malleable and fluid, similar to water, where it can take the shape of its environment while still retaining the properties of fundamental rights. Our world will never come to a universal agreement on justice, due to the deeply embedded cultural beliefs and differing views, so a single understanding of justice is impossible. If the world can have a baseline understanding of right and wrong and the flexibility …
