Segmentation data serves as an important resource used in business research. It encapsulates people who live in certain areas according to similar demographic traits, behaviors and habits, and consumer trends. Companies such as ESRI make their segmentation data available for a price, along with highly-specialized analysis tools. This project is a case study that examines the utility of ESRI segmentation data and tools to identify a suitable marketing strategy for potential customers in specific locations in Ohio. It further identifies population segments in certain geographic areas according to consumer trends and demographic characteristics. Unlike traditional brick-and-mortar (B&M) dealerships, this project …

Small Business Debt Financing: The Effect Of Lender Structural Complexity., Jaume Franquesa, David Vera
Small Business Debt Financing: The Effect Of Lender Structural Complexity., Jaume Franquesa, David Vera
Business Administration Faculty Scholarship
Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) depend on a large measure on commercial banks for external capital, and US SMEs are increasingly experiencing bank credit constraints and resorting to costly alternatives. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of lender organizational complexity on SME financing shortfalls. In particular, it examines the credit shortage effects associated with the SME's reliance on bank holding company (BHC) owned, as opposed to independent, lenders.

Explanation And Rigor In Management Theorizing: Which Theory-Building Criteria Make For An Influential Contribution?, Jaume Franquesa, William Acar, Jino Mwaka
Business Administration Faculty Scholarship
This paper advances and tests a comprehensive but parsimonious model of theory-building/evaluation criteria in management and organization science, and of the relationships between these criteria and a theory's eventual prominence within the discipline. The model is tested using survey data in which knowledgeable scholars are asked to provide a detailed assessment of the traits of one of a few well-known seminal theoretical articles that are used as vehicles. The results support the presence of three distinct but correlated dimensions of theory evaluation (novelty, extendibility, and relevance to practice) and further provide confirmatory evidence of an overarching, second-order construct, which we …
Conceiving Perfectible Theories In Management Through Adaptive Framing., William Acar, Jaume Franquesa, Jino Mwaka
Conceiving Perfectible Theories In Management Through Adaptive Framing., William Acar, Jaume Franquesa, Jino Mwaka
Business Administration Faculty Scholarship
Extant studies of theory evaluation rely on hindsight even though editors' entreaties are meant to be studied ex ante and applied in real time. The authors elaborate on the definitional requirements of theory and ways to appraise it. The authors present a synoptic chronology of the main trends in management theory evaluation, and discuss the methodological differences between formal theories and actual management schemes. This discussion leads us to adopt a constructivist perspective and replace “Popperian falsifiability” when inapplicable to management. The authors then introduce the concept of adaptive framing as a tripartite process subsuming the criteria of novelty, practicability …

Explaining Entrepreneurial Transience: The Role Of Local Taxation Policy., Jaume Franquesa, Sergey Anokhin, Jino Mwaka
Business Administration Faculty Scholarship
Geographical relocation of ventures, together with rates of firm formation and closure, determine the entrepreneurial population dynamics of a region. However, venture migration has remained largely unaddressed by prior entrepreneurship scholars. This paper draws from theoretical frameworks and prior findings in the economic demography literature to explore policy and environmental determinants of regional venture migration rates, referred to as entrepreneurial transience. Using county-level data for the state of Ohio, we show that local taxation is an important driver of entrepreneurial transience. In particular, local income tax rates are found to be negatively related to subsequent net transience – i.e., venture …
Organizational Slack And Information Technology Innovation Adoption In Smes., Jaume Franquesa, Alan Brandyberry
Organizational Slack And Information Technology Innovation Adoption In Smes., Jaume Franquesa, Alan Brandyberry
Business Administration Faculty Scholarship
This study explores the relevant dimensions of organizational slack in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and investigates their impact on adoption of different types of information technology (IT) innovations. Using recent data from a representative sample of 2,296 U.S. SMEs, we find that the slack-innovation relationships previously described in larger firms do not hold well for SMEs. Our results show potential slack (measured as access to external credit) to be a strong predictor of technology adoption in SMEs. By contrast, available slack appeared not to be a significant factor in SME innovation adoption. Moreover, the direction of the effects of …
