Case Study 3: Next Steps: Applying A Trauma-Informed Model To Create An Anti-Racist Organizational Culture
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
“Although there has been a significant increase in the delivery of evidence-supported, trauma-informed care over the past few years, there has been less discussion around the consideration of the broader cultural, political, and societal factors that contextualize client trauma and that also need to be recognized and understood to promote healing and prevent future trauma."

What If I Liked It Better Before? An Analysis Of Consumer Reactance To Brand Logo Redesigns, Lauren Bushnell
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Past research has explored the relationship between logo redesigns and consumer behavior, specifically detailing the influence of brand connection on consumer processing of logo redesigns. Such research has found that variations in logo design have key implications on consumer connection to brands in ways that influence brand attitude. Key constructs explored include brand loyalty and commitment, the extent or style of changes in redesigns, and visual processing of logos as a means of determining future behaviors. While prior research emphasizes the influence of loyalty and connection to brands in relation to consumer processing of logo redesigns, research has not fully …

The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson
The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis explores the root cause of the systemic underrepresentation of women in the finance industry by investigating why so few women choose to study finance in college. It looks in depth at why there is a low percentage of women that graduate in finance from Brigham Young University each year by analyzing the survey responses of women in business majors across the Marriott School. The thesis discusses three areas of solutions for greater mentorship, transparency, and exposure that can be implemented through five actionable steps to help shift the dynamic of representation. While I do not aim to make …

“Leadership is all about changing the order of things. Machiavelli said, ‘There is nothing so difficult or so dangerous as to undertake to change the order of things.’ And that is true. It is difficult, and it is sometimes dangerous, because people resist and people are afraid. And that is why only leaders can drive change.”

Fighting Human Trafficking By Better Understanding Nonprofit Collaboration, Angie Holzer
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Abstract: This research study examines nonprofit organizations and how collaboration plays a part in the human trafficking efforts within the United States. A descriptive study was conducted analyzing data from a quantitative, survey-based research method. Using a sample of 29 nonprofit leaders working in fighting human trafficking, data was collected on 1) what challenges nonprofits face in collaborating, 2) what technology tools nonprofits use to collaborate, and 3) how many other groups a single nonprofit works with in combating human trafficking. The findings show that the main challenges are 1) limited time, and 2) competition and/or lack of trust.

“Female victims continue to be particularly affected by trafficking in persons. In 2018, for every 10 victims detected globally, about five were adult women and two were girls. About one third of the overall detected victims were children, both girls (19 per cent) and boys (15 per cent), while 20 per cent were adult men. Too Fast? Too Slow? A Novel Approach For Identifying Extreme Response Behavior In Online Surveys, Manasvi Kumar, Joseph S. Valacich, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, David Kim

Some participants of online surveys engage in extreme answering behavior while generating responses (i.e., they respond too fast or too slow) relative to population norms. Here, we demonstrate how participants’ navigation behaviors can be used to potentially identify such responses. We administered an online survey where students (who were earlier instructed to complete a task) report lenience scores towards non-appropriate behavior while completing the task. We draw on cognitive dissonance theory to posit that failure to follow instruction predicts lenience scores. We then created different datasets by excluding data from participants flagged by our metrics and generated predictive models. We …

Competing For Deal Flow In Local Mortgage Markets, Darren Aiello, Mark Garmaise, Gabriel Natividad

The U.S. mortgage market exhibits competitive instability in which some lenders emerge rapidly from the fringe to substantial market shares. Using inferred discontinuities in application acceptance models to generate local lending shocks, we analyze the impact on a lender of a surge in originations by its competitors. We show that the quickest-growing (not the largest) competitors divert applications and originations from other lenders. Facing a quickly-growing competitor, lenders charge higher interest rates, partially due to the increased risk of their loans. Loan performance suffers for other lenders as the quickestgrowing competitor’s originations increase.

A Textual Analysis Of Logograms In Chinese Ipo Roadshows: How Agreement Between Investors And Management Relates To Pricing And Performance, James C. Brau, James Cicon, Stephen R. Owen

We analyze the interaction between management and investors during Chinese IPO roadshows through Jaccard Similarity analysis of written Chinese logograms. We provide evidence that when agreement is high, investor optimism increases, leading to relatively large first-day underpricing. We further show that high agreement biases investors to systematically overestimate IPO prospects leading to poor long-run abnormal performance. Jaccard Similarity is different from current content analysis methodologies because it is language and culture agnostic, requiring no a priori construction of thematic dictionaries. Elimination of such dictionaries removes the danger that the researcher has imposed predispositions upon the study.
