Addressing Author Misconduct, Christopher J. Smiley
AADEJ - The Communicator
This feature article addresses the growing need for clear editorial policies on author misconduct, especially with the rise of Generative AI (GAI). Editors are vital gatekeepers who ensure the accuracy and transparency of dental literature, thereby protecting patient safety. The author distinguishes between unintentional misconduct, such as inadvertent plagiarism, and intentional misconduct, like data fabrication or deliberate non-disclosure of AI use. Remedial measures emphasize author education for honest mistakes, while severe violations require zero-tolerance actions such as formal retraction and institutional notification. Implementing these protocols is vital for maintaining reader trust and upholding professional integrity.

Dental Professionalism In A Changing World: Challenges & Opportunities, Robert P. Iovino, Dds, Ma Dds, Ma
Journal of the American College of Dentists
This manuscript examines the erosion of traditional dental professionalism amid rising educational costs, declining membership in professional associations, and the growing influence of corporate ownership and private equity in dentistry. Drawing perspectives from economics, sociology, philosophy, law, and ethics, it traces the historical development of professional licensure and its role in safeguarding clinical autonomy, ethical integrity, and public trust. The analysis highlights how deregulation and profit-driven practice models challenge the profession’s social contract. The manuscript argues that preserving strong civic institutions, restrictive licensure standards, and humanities-informed education is essential to sustaining dentistry as a learned profession rather than a commodified …

How Dentists Can Remain Advisors Of Merit To Their Patients, Daniel L. Orr Ii, Dds, Ms (Anesth), Phd, Jd, Md, Facd (Nevada Section Chair)
Journal of the American College of Dentists
This article examines how members of the dental profession can sustain their longstanding reputation as trusted advisors amid declining public confidence in major institutions. Grounded in ethical principles, informed consent, and professional self-regulation, dentistry has historically ranked among the most trusted professions. The discussion explores challenges to credibility, including media scrutiny, concerns about anesthesia safety, controversial treatment hesitancy, and debates over community water fluoridation. Emphasizing the concept of the “advisor of merit,” the author argues that continued trust depends on truthful communication, transparency about risks, respect for patient autonomy, and freedom from conflicts of interest in clinical and public health …

Empathy And Human-Centered Leadership In Community Health Center Dental Clinics, Pamela S. Alston Dds, Mpp, Facd
Journal of the American College of Dentists
A person-centered approach, with empathy toward patients, can improve satisfaction among both patients and dental health professionals. A dental director with a human-centered leadership style can improve the well-being of oral health team members. This article describes the role that empathy, a core value of humanism and professionalism, plays in accomplishing these improvements in community health center dental clinics. This article also describes the risks of empathy, as experienced by the author in her role as a dental director and practitioner, as well as documented in the literature. It further focuses on dental directors’ human-centered approaches to supporting oral health …

‘Boomers’ And ‘Gen Zs’: More Alike Than You’D Think, Michelle C. Dziurgot
‘Boomers’ And ‘Gen Zs’: More Alike Than You’D Think, Michelle C. Dziurgot
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This month's editorial compares Baby Boomer (born 1946–1964) and Generation Z (born 1997–2012) members of the MDA, highlighting unexpected similarities. Both generations share a strong dedication to hard work, social justice, and pride in MDA membership. They also both experienced economic downturns (Boomers: 70s/early 80s recessions; Gen Z: 2008-09 Great Recession), leading them to be cautious with savings. Although communication methods differ (Boomers prefer phone calls, Gen Z prefers texting), both desire concise conversations. They also share traditional goals like marriage, family, and a strong desire for financial security and home ownership.

Staff Matters: How To Get Creative With Staff Benefit Offerings, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Small practices must be intentional and creative with benefits to distinguish themselves in the competitive labor market. Strategies include offering Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs) or covering dental/vision care. Work-life balance benefits are highly valued, such as flexible scheduling, additional paid time off beyond the state-mandated Earned Sick Time Act, or time off for birthdays. Practices should consider financial wellness options like retirement savings plans or student loan repayment assistance. Professional development, like covering certifications and offering mentorship, is crucial. Using platforms like TASC or Fringe to provide flexible "lifestyle" benefits allows employees to choose perks that matter most …

Mda Insurance: Offer Group Health Insurance To Entice Recruits, Retain Valuable Staff, Craig Start
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Amidst a competitive labor market, offering group health insurance is critical for attracting and retaining qualified dental staff, as it is the most highly valued employee benefit. Dentists can establish an employment policy stipulating cost-sharing for premiums, rather than paying the entire cost. The MDA strongly encourages investigating the exclusive MDA Health Plan, which offers 11 distinct plan designs powered by Priority Health. For 2026, the MDA Health Plan is increasing rates by only 4%, significantly lower than commercial group plans requesting double-digit increases (10% to 18%). Plans can be started at any time during the year, requiring about 30 …

Mda At Your Service: A Deaf Person Wants To Become My Patient, Rachel Sinacola Dds, Ms
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The column clarifies that under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), dental offices must provide auxiliary aids or services for patients with hearing impairments, which may require a professional interpreter paid for by the dentist in complex visits. Members are encouraged to notify the MDA about practice/life changes (e.g., address changes or caseload shifts) to ensure proper benefits and dues discounts. New associates are strongly urged to utilize the MDA resource for contract review, which offers a 10% discount with Kerr Russell Attorneys. Additionally, the MDA Store provides free Labor Poster Packets, fulfilling state and federal employer requirements.
The Case For Credentialing Dental Assistants, Michelle Godofsky
The Case For Credentialing Dental Assistants, Michelle Godofsky
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Credentialing dental assistants is presented as a method to enhance productivity and address workforce shortages; currently, only about 15% of Michigan dental assistants are Registered Dental Assistants (RDAs). A case study at Thunder Bay Community Health Service, an FQHC in Northern Michigan, illustrates success, where RDAs perform expanded functions—like placing restorations and monitoring nitrous oxide—boosting clinic productivity by 16%. The clinic supports its dental assistants by covering education and exam expenses and providing study time during work hours. This investment improves job satisfaction, confidence, morale, and patient communication among staff, strengthening employee retention.
Dentistry And The Law: Miscellaneous Questions About Dental Records, Daniel Schulte Jd
Dentistry And The Law: Miscellaneous Questions About Dental Records, Daniel Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This column addresses the legal requirements surrounding dental records. Dentists must furnish copies of records to patients or those acting on their behalf (with signed consent), but the original records should always be retained by the treating dentist. Patient information regarding care and treatment is confidential and privileged; disclosure requires written patient consent unless specific legal exceptions apply, such as court orders, defense of a claim, or HIPAA compliance for treatment, payment, or healthcare operations. Dentists must also obtain a signed release from the patient (or guardian for minors) before displaying "before and after" photos for commercial use to avoid …
The New Professional: The Legacy Of Women In Dentistry, And Your Place In It, Amrita Patel Dds
The New Professional: The Legacy Of Women In Dentistry, And Your Place In It, Amrita Patel Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Women now constitute over half of dental graduates, transforming the profession’s culture and leadership. While women hold a majority of seats on the MDA Board of Trustees, wage disparities, underrepresentation in certain specialties, and work-life balance pressures remain challenges. The author emphasizes that the legacy of women in dentistry is an active, evolving force. New professionals have the opportunity and responsibility to advance this legacy by engaging in mentorship, advocating for fair workplace policies, pursuing ownership, and serving as role models. This ensures the profession is defined by opportunities rather than barriers.

I, Me, And My-Opia, Michael Saba
I, Me, And My-Opia, Michael Saba
Journal of the Macomb Dental Society
Personal experiences often serve as catalysts for broader insights into human behavior and perspective. This narrative explores the metaphor of myopia—both clinical and figurative—as a lens through which to examine selfishness, shortsightedness, and the pursuit of instant gratification. An eye examination revealed not only a physical diagnosis of nearsightedness but also prompted recognition of a narrowed, self-centered outlook that contributed to stress and disconnection in personal and professional life. Drawing parallels between optical myopia and psychological or behavioral myopia, the reflection highlights how short-term focus can undermine long-term fulfillment and even foster destructive patterns such as addiction. The discussion emphasizes …
Another Study Club??, Chris Gorecki Dds
Another Study Club??, Chris Gorecki Dds
Journal of the Macomb Dental Society
Membership value within professional dental organizations remains a critical issue as local and state societies face declining market shares, often below 40 percent. In contrast, the Macomb Dental Society currently maintains a market share of approximately 63 percent, underscoring both its relative strength and the need for continued innovation. Historically, membership was driven by professional obligation; however, newer dentists, burdened by financial pressures, are less likely to renew without clear demonstration of tangible benefits. To address this challenge, the Macomb Dental Society has explored initiatives that enhance member engagement, including leveraging existing study clubs as a conduit for continuing education …

Mda Insurance And Mda Services: Your One-Stop Partners In Practice Success!
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

MDA Insurance provides a wide array of specialized coverage, including professional liability, health (MDA Health Plan), life, disability, and personal lines. The dual entity provides comprehensive support, ensuring …

Staff Matters: My Dental Assistant Asked For A Work Accommodation — What Are My Obligations?, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This column addresses an employer's obligations when a dental assistant requests an accommodation for a medical condition that makes prolonged standing difficult. Both the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, for 15+ employees) and the Michigan Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act (PDCRA, for 1+ employee) mandate providing a "reasonable accommodation" unless it poses an "undue hardship". The employer must initiate the "interactive process"—a good-faith dialogue—to identify the employee's limitations and explore feasible accommodations. Medical documentation can be requested to substantiate the need. Examples of reasonable adjustments include providing a stool, offering schedule flexibility, or reassigning non-essential duties. Undue hardship …

Macomb Dental Society Offers More Than You May Think, Kyle Katynski Dds
Journal of the Macomb Dental Society
Seasonal rhythms in Michigan coincide with the renewal of professional development opportunities offered by the Macomb Dental Society. Continuing education (CE) programs serve as a critical mechanism for maintaining licensure while advancing clinical competence across diverse domains, including pain management, infection control, ethics, and emerging treatment modalities. Over time, the Society has expanded its offerings to encompass specialized seminars, interdisciplinary discussions, and community-based events that integrate professional learning with collegial engagement. These initiatives not only enhance practitioners’ clinical knowledge but also foster collaboration, peer-to-peer exchange, and exposure to evolving practice management strategies. Mda Services: 4 Reasons To Call In The Embezzlement Protection And Investigation Professionals, Reva Darling
Mda Services: 4 Reasons To Call In The Embezzlement Protection And Investigation Professionals, Reva Darling
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
With over 50% of dentists experiencing embezzlement, often due to over-trusting staff with financial tasks, the MDA endorses Prosperident for protection and investigation. Four reasons to seek their help include: inheriting an office manager who knows more about the practice management software than the new owner; financial reports showing income is lower than expected based on patient volume; identifying "red flags" such as an employee refusing vacation or cross-training; and needing proactive strategies to protect cash flow. The average loss is about $109,000. Prosperident offers a $1,500 "First Look" service to covertly review records and identify anomalies, providing evidence needed …

Revolutionizing Dental Operatories: How Do We Do More Using Less?, Michael Zidile D.D.S., Brian Choi D.D.S.
The New York State Dental Journal
The authors present a transformative approach to modernizing dental operatories as part of their practice’s recent expansion. Aimed at enhancing efficiency and patient-centered care, the project reimagines traditional operatory design by eliminating ergonomic and hygienic barriers, notably, the use of keyboards and mice. Key innovations include the implementation of touchscreen PC displays, high-power PCs with graphics cards, magnetic USB cables for rapid data transfer, omnidirectional microphones linked to AI scribes and wireless intraoral scanning. The design prioritizes a standardized, clutter-free layout across eight operatories, utilizing A-Dec Inspire Series cabinets for ergonomic supply management. By removing countertops and pullout trays, the …
The New Professional: Evaluating A Practice Purchase: Guidance For The First-Time Buyer, Amrita Patel Dds
The New Professional: Evaluating A Practice Purchase: Guidance For The First-Time Buyer, Amrita Patel Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This guidance for first-time dental practice buyers stresses that evaluating a practice involves more than just the price tag, encompassing financials, people, culture, and potential growth. Buyers must analyze at least three years of financial statements, paying close attention to collection trends, accounts receivable, overhead, net income, and the mix of insurance plans. Patient loyalty is critical; buyers must assess the number of "active" patients (seen in the last 18–24 months) and recognize that attrition may occur if loyalty was tied strongly to the selling doctor. Inheriting experienced, welcoming staff and a positive office culture is crucial for success. Practical …
What Doesn’T Kill You, Makes You Stronger, Michelle C. Dziurgot
What Doesn’T Kill You, Makes You Stronger, Michelle C. Dziurgot
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The editorial describes the significant damage caused to a dental office in August 2025 by an "all-out power surge" resulting from a direct lightning strike, which fried equipment including dental chairs, computers, and HVAC. This forced the practice to close and reschedule patients. The experience highlighted the critical importance of having property and business interruption insurance through MDA Insurance to cover physical damages and lost scheduled procedures. Dentists are advised to install surge protectors at their fuse boxes, review their policies, document all damage with photos and receipts, and advocate aggressively for timely claim payments to ensure the practice is …

Dentistry And The Law: There Will Be No Ban On Covenants Not To Compete, Daniel Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted on September 5, 2025, to accept a federal court ruling that it had exceeded its authority in proposing a ban on covenants not to compete (CNTCs), ending two-and-a-half years of speculation. Consequently, the enforceability of CNTCs will primarily be determined by Michigan statutory and common law. Guidelines for drafting enforceable CNTCs include setting a reasonable term, typically two years or less for employees, though purchase agreements may allow up to five years. The restricted geographic territory must be limited to what is necessary to protect the practice’s current patient population, such as a 10-mile …
