Scripted Thought: Processing Korean Hancha And Hangul In A Multimedia Context, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We compare the cognitive processing of words written in alphabetic scripts with the cognitive processing of words written in logographic scripts. We suggest that the processing of words written in alphabetic scripts relies more heavily on the storage of--and the serial rehearsal properties of--short-term memory's phonological loop. In contrast, the processing of words written in logographic scripts relies more on the storage of--and the spatial-relational rehearsal properties of--visual short-term memory. A series of three experiments investigates implications of these processing differences within a single language, Korean, where words can be written in the alphabetic Hangul or in the logographic Han-cha. …

Models Of Farm Service Agency Guaranteed Loan Loss Claim Rates In The U.S. For 1990-1998, Latisha A. Settlage, Bruce L. Dixon, Bruce L. Ahrendsen, Steven R. Koenig

Research Reports and Research Bulletins

The Farm Service Agency guaranteed loan program is an important source of credit for family-sized farming operations in Arkansas and the other states of the U.S. This program provides loan guarantees to borrowers who are otherwise unable to obtain credit from traditional lenders at reasonable rates and terms. This study identifies those factors related to the program’s loss claim rate performance over the years fiscal 1989 through 1998 using state-level data from forty states. For both the operating loan and farm ownership loan programs, farm operator financial variables, interest rates, and commercial bank characteristics are found to be statistically significant …

The Central And East European Automotive Industry Restructuring, Petr Pavlinek

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

have come to the Slavic Research Center of the Hokkaido University to study the profound changes that have been taking place in the automotive industry of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) since 1990. My work is based on several field research visits to the Czech Republic that included in depth interviews conducted with key informants (plant managers, trade union leaders and ministry officials) in car factories, car component plants and governmental institutions. The automotive industry restructuring in the 1990s involved a number of complex issues that my research addresses, such as the effects of price and trade liberalization in the …

Dimension And Exercise Variance In Assessment Center Scores: A Large-Scale Evaluation Of Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Filip Lievens, James M. Conway

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study addresses 3 questions regarding assessment center construct validity: (a) Are assessment center ratings best thought of is reflecting dimension constructs (dimension model). exercises (exercise model). or a combination? (b) To what extent do dimensions or exercises account for variance? (c) Which design characteristics increase dimension variance? To this end, a large set of multitrait-multimethod studies (N = 34) were analyzed, showing that assessment center ratings were best represented (i.e., in terms of fit and admissible solutions) by a model with correlated dimensions and exercises specified a correlated uniquenesses. In this model, dimension variance equals exercise variance. Significantly more …

The Influence Of Firm Dispositions On Interfirm Relationship Formation In Business Markets, Jean L. Johnson, Ravipreet S. Sohi Dec 2001

The Influence Of Firm Dispositions On Interfirm Relationship Formation In Business Markets, Jean L. Johnson, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

The central premise of this paper is that firm level characteristics or behavioral traits, referred to as predispositions, influence how the firm behaves and interacts in its interfirm relationships (EFRs). This augments traditional approaches that focus on the intra-relationship perspective and/or on environmental influences on the relationship. Firm predispositions of strategic intent and relational proclivity are expected to individually, and in combination, increase the extent of connectedness between partners in interfirm relationships. In turn, through connectedness, they affect relationship effectiveness in terms of reciprocity, information exchange, and cooperation. Results indicated that the predispositions increased connectedness, but combinational effects were not …

Potential Of Demand Management As A Short-Term Means Of Relieving Airport Congestion, Terence Ping Ching Fan, Amedeo R. Odoni Dec 2001

Potential Of Demand Management As A Short-Term Means Of Relieving Airport Congestion, Terence Ping Ching Fan, Amedeo R. Odoni

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Rapid air traffic growth combined with limited airport airside capacities have led to ever-increasing delays. When the demand for air travel and the general economy recover from the current crisis, it is conceivable that air traffic congestion may again come to the fore. Given the rather bleak prospects for significant near-term increases in airport runway system capacity, it is likely that demand for runway access may need to be carefully managed to keep flight delays under control. While various approaches to demand management have been suggested in the research literature, few studies to date have provided quantitative evidence on two …

Venture Capitalists And Closely Held Ipos: Lessons For Family-Controlled Firms, Joseph H. Astrachan, Daniel L. Mcconaughy Dec 2001

Venture Capitalists And Closely Held Ipos: Lessons For Family-Controlled Firms, Joseph H. Astrachan, Daniel L. Mcconaughy

Faculty Articles

This study examines how the presence of venture capitalists (VCs) in closely held IPOs relates to their performance. It also identifies other factors that are related to the performance of closely held IPOs. Closely held firms in this study had an average of 88% insider ownership before the IPO. In general, we find that closely held IPOs benefit from associations with VCs. This finding suggests that VCs' outside expertise and connections are valuable assets. Because it takes time for VCs to effect changes and because beneficial changes generally occur gradually, firms contemplating IPOs must plan well in advance to maximize …

Thanksgiving And Football, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

(As with all American traditions if it happened once or twice it is one. Therefore I present my traditional Thanksgiving piece) The History of Thanksgiving and of Football both go back into the Middle Ages, and so it may not be so strange that the two would become intertwined in modern America.

Mark Mcgwire Leaves The Game: His Legacy, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 2001

Mark Mcgwire Leaves The Game: His Legacy, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Mark McGwire has retired. He will be best remembered as the man who broke Roger Maris' single season home run record. He will be remembered in tandem with Sammy Sosa for that wonderful season of 1998 when the two of them chased Roger Maris across the sands of time and then both caught him. He will be remembered for the wonderful scene as he broke Maris' record. He will be remembered as one of the "Bash Brothers" who, along with Jose Canseco, redefined the term "long ball" and became a "murderer's row" of two.

Patriotism Post 9/11 And Contraction, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Now back in the country among My Fellow Americans, but still wandering the highways and byways, I watch with some interest the spectacle of the baseball playoffs and the World Series in the new Post-9/11 World. I am struck by the intensity of the patriotic pageantry prior to each game. The often beautiful and moving singing of the National Anthem; the excessive displays of the red, white and blue; President Bush throwing out the first ball at the World Series; all conspire to mark these events as great moments of communal remembrance and/or celebration.

The Late But Still Great World Series: Bob Brenly Is Blessed At The Bob, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In many ways this unpredictable World Series was highly predictable, in other ways it was one of the wildest crapshoots in recent history. It was also one of the best World Series ever, rivaling the 1991 Twins-Braves in my memory bank.

Beggar-Thy-Neighbor Advertising: Theory And Application To Generic Commodity Promotion Programs, Jennifer S. James, Julian M. Alston, John W. Freebairn Nov 2001

Beggar-Thy-Neighbor Advertising: Theory And Application To Generic Commodity Promotion Programs, Jennifer S. James, Julian M. Alston, John W. Freebairn

Agribusiness

Profits from generic advertising by a producer group often come partly at the expense of producers of closely related commodities. The resulting tendency toward excessive advertising is exacerbated by check-off funding. To analyze this beggar-thy-neighbor behavior we compare a scenario where different producer groups cooperate and choose their advertising expenditures jointly to maximize the sum of profits across the groups, and a scenario where they optimize independently. In an illustrative example using 1998 data for U.S. beef and pork, the noncooperatively chosen expenditure on beef and pork advertising is more than three times the cooperative optimum.

Exploring The Relationship Between Learning And Leadership, Lillas Brown, Barry Z. Posner Nov 2001

Exploring The Relationship Between Learning And Leadership, Lillas Brown, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

This paper investigates how two important research streams, namely learning and leadership, might be related with one another. Responses on the learning tactics inventory and leadership practices inventory are compared for a managerial sample (n = 312). Results indicate that more active and versatile learners subsequently consider themselves more frequently involved and engaged in leadership behaviors. Implications for transformational learning and leadership theories are explored, as well as thoughts about how the development of leadership competencies may be enhanced and affected by various learning techniques.
