Real Estate War In Cyberspace: An Emerging Electronic Market?, Kevin Crowston, Rolf T. Wigand
Real Estate War In Cyberspace: An Emerging Electronic Market?, Kevin Crowston, Rolf T. Wigand
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
In this paper, we explore how electronic commerce, the World-Wide Web in particular, is affecting the real estate industry. Real estate is a promising setting for studying electronic commerce because it is an information-intensive and information-driven industry; transaction based, with high value and asset-specificity; with many market-intermediaries (agents and brokers who connect buyers and sellers rather than buying or selling themselves); and experiencing on-going information technology (IT) related changes. We analyze a real estate transaction to suggest where IT might change the process of buying or selling a house and discuss several current ventures in this area. This analysis suggests …

Tools For Inventing Organizations: Toward A Handbook Of Organizational Processes, Thomas W. Malone, Kevin Crowston, Jintae Lee, Brian Pentland, Chrysanthos Dellarocas
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
This paper reports on the first five years of work in a project to address these problems by (1) developing methodologies and software tools for representing and codifying organizational processes at varying levels of abstraction, and (2) collecting, organizing, and analyzing numerous examples of how different groups and companies perform similar functions. The result of this work is an on-line "process handbook" which can be used to help people: (1) redesign existing business processes, (2) invent new processes (especially those that take advantage of information technology), and (3) organize and share knowledge about organizational practices. We also expect this process …
Relationships Between Time Management, Control, Work–Family Conflict, And Strain, Gary A. Adams, Steve M. Jex
Relationships Between Time Management, Control, Work–Family Conflict, And Strain, Gary A. Adams, Steve M. Jex
Management Faculty Research and Publications
This article incorporates recent research regarding time management into a model of work–family conflict. The authors hypothesized that 3 types of time management behavior would have both direct and indirect (through perceived control of time) relationships, with work interfering with family and family interfering with work. It was also hypothesized that both of these types of work-family conflict would be related to the strain outcomes of job dissatisfaction and health complaints. This model was tested with a sample of 522 workers. In general, the hypothesized relationships were supported.

An Examination Of Management Accountants’ Use And Perception Of Expert Systems, Michael D. Akers, Robert E. Jordan, Grover L. Porter
Accounting Faculty Research and Publications
Although there has been a number of articles written about the possible use of expert systems by management accountants, there has been limited research to support such predictions. The primary purposes of this paper are to examine management accoun-tants’ use and perceptions of expert systems. A survey instrument was designed to eli-cit responses (Likert scale and open-ended) about management accountants' perceptions of the current and future use of expert systems and to determine their knowledge, interest and involvement with such systems. The findings of this study indicate that although respondents are moderately interested and involved with expert systems, they have …

Testing The Servqual Scale In The Business-To-Business Sector: The Case Of Ocean Freight Shipping Service, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
A key question is whether the instruments developed for consumer services can accurately gauge the service quality perceptions of organisational customers. Reports psychometric testing of the SERVQUAL as a measure of service quality in ocean freight services. Based on a survey of a cross-sectional sample of 114 business organisations in Singapore, which regularly utilise ocean freight services for their export needs, this study found that the psychometric properties of the SERVQUAL scale are at variance with those found in consumer services settings. Further, the SERVQUAL perceptions scores were found to be a better predictor than the SERVQUAL gap scores. In …

A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Cognitive Responses, Beliefs, And Attitudes Toward Advertising In General In Two Asian Countries, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
An important research topic in advertising is the study of consumer advertising perceptions. As shown by previous research, these perceptions affect attitude-toward-advertising-in-general which, ultimately, affects consumer brand attitudes and purchase intentions. Understanding consumer ad perceptions is useful to advertising practitioners in developing and implementing effective ad campaigns both nationally and internationally. Our study extends previous research efforts by comparing the cognitive responses, beliefs, and attitudes of consumers regarding advertising in two countries located in Southeast Asia. While results indicate similar advertising beliefs (in direction) and favorable attitudes, differences in cognitive responses and magnitude of beliefs and favorable attitudes exist. The …

Algorithms For Scheduling Projects With Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester, Willy Herroelen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The problem of scheduling projects under various types of resource constraints constitutes an important and challenging problem which has received increasing attention during the past several years. The bulk of the models and procedures designed for coping with these problem types aim at scheduling project activities to minimize the project duration subject to constant availability constraints on the required set of resources and precedence constraints that indicate that activities can only be started when all of their predecessors have already been finished. However, real-life project scheduling applications often involve more complicated types of precedence relations such as arbitrary minimal and …

When professors get together outside the university they talk about that thing which dominates them, their work. This conversation may take the form of discussing a product of that work-a lecture in class, a research paper, committee deliberations-but most often it seems to be about conditions of work. One hears talk about course load, the trials of tenure and promotion, salaries and compensation, and of course the quality of the students on which some of academic labor is supposed to fall. In themselves, these conversations are not surprising. Mail carriers have very similar conversations, as do primary school teachers, subway …

“Financial markets are given to excesses and if a boom/bust sequence progresses beyond a certain point, it will never revert to where it came from. Instead of acting like a pendulum, financial markets have recently acted more like a wrecking ball, knocking over one economy after another.” - A testimony before the US House Banking Committee, Sep, 1998. There are three parts to this paper. The first part examines the time series behaviour of the equity indices of ten countries. Using Robinson (1995a)’s modified GPH estimator and Robinson (1994a)’s average periodogram estimator for the differencing parameter, we have detected that …

East Vs. West: Strategic Marketing Management Meets The Asian Networks, George T. Haley, Chin Tiong Tan

Strategic management in Asia is different. Decision-making differs from that taught in Western, and even Asian, schools of business. In the last decade, the influence of Japanese management systems on Western management practice has become evident. Though the Japanese economy is the world's second largest, and Japan's population substantial, neither compares with the combined economies and combined populations of non-Japanese Asia. The influence of the most aggressive elements of the non-Japanese Asian business communities, the Overseas Chinese and Overseas Indian Networks cannot help to be felt on Western management practice. This article explains why this difference in decision-making styles exists, …

Family roles in deciding household purchases have intrigued marketers for a long time, with researchers calling for more studies on the subject - especially those which look into the roles played by children and others in the decision process. This paper investigates the relative influence of the husband, wife, children, and others in 5 sub-decisions involved in the choice of a school, and distinguishes families reporting different roles on their demographic characteristics. Cluster analysis was used to develop segments on the basis of family roles. Results indicate that children and others have negligible influence in this particular service and that …
Cross Sectional Variation Of The Effect Of Bond Rating Changes On Stock Prices, Jeremy C. Goh, Louis H. Ederington
Cross Sectional Variation Of The Effect Of Bond Rating Changes On Stock Prices, Jeremy C. Goh, Louis H. Ederington
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Previous research has found that the stock market reacts negatively to bond rating downgrades and that downgrades tend to follow periods of negative returns, indicating that at least some downgrades are partially predictable. Hypothesizing that the reaction to a downgrade depends on both the implications for cash flows and the degree of surprise, we explore how the reaction to downgrade announcements varies across bond issues. We find that the equity market reacts much more negatively to bond rating downgrades to and within the speculative bond category than to downgrades within the investment grade category. Within the speculative category, the reaction …

In many purchase environments, consumers use information from a number of product categories prior to making a decision. These purchase situations create dependencies in choice outcomes across categories. As such, these decision problems cannot be easily modeled using the single-category, single-choice paradigm commonly used by researchers in marketing. We outline a conceptual framework for categorization, and then discuss three types of cross-category dependence: cross-category consideration cross-category learning, and product bundling. We argue that the key to modeling choice dependence across categories is knowledge of the goals driving consumer behavior.

This is an attempt to evaluate the implications of Hong Kong's political transition topost-colonial rule for economic governance in the SAR beyond the 'Beijing versus HongKong' perspective. The article examines the changing government-business dynamics inHong Kong after the reversion by focusing on three inter-related dimensions: economicideology; institutional and policy framework; and the new political environment inpost-colonial Hong Kong. By challenging the assertion that Hong Kong is returning to thepre-Patten colonial order under Chinese management, it argues that economic governancein Hong Kong has always been more complex than has been characterized in the literature.A conceptual framework incorporating the dynamic interplay of …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Our article takes up Joy Reid's (1996) proposal that second sentences deserve a second look in academic writing research and pedagogy. Reid's data and commentaries indicate that second sentences, the sentences following topic sentences, make important but generally underrated contributions to the (in)coherence of students' written paragraphs. Her study, in a U.S. university, found that English as a second language (ESL) student writers often developed paragraphs that did not meet the expectations of experienced native English speaker (NES) readers. We offer a contextualized critique and partial replication of Reid's exploratory study. Our research, in Singapore, investigates second sentence writing by …

It is well known that foreign investments by the industrialized world are driven by the private sector leveraging its technological, management and marketing skills, and that those by developing countries arise because of geographic proximity, social and economic homogeneity, and cultural familiarity. In the case of Singapore, a uniques characteristics is the direct participation by government-related corporations and their affiliates, and persuasion by statutory bodies such as the Economic Development Board and Trade Development Board for the corporate sector

Phase Transitions In Project Scheduling, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Researchers in the area of artificial intelligence have recently shown that many NP-complete problems exhibit phase transitions. Often, problem instances change from being easy to being hard to solve to again being easy to solve when certain of their characteristics are modified. Most often the transitions are sharp, but sometimes they are rather continuous in the order parameters that are characteristic of the system as a whole. To the best of our knowledge, no evidence has been provided so far that similar phase transitions occur in NP-hard scheduling problems. In this paper we report on the existence of phase transitions …

Marketing, Business Processes, And Shareholder Value: An Organizationally Embedded View Of Marketing Activities And The Discipline Of Marketing, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors develop a framework for understanding the integration of marketing with business processes and shareholder value. The framework redefines marketing phenomena as embedded in three core business processes that generate value for customers-product development management, supply chain management, and customer relationship management-which in turn creates shareholder value. Such a conceptualization of marketing has the potential to introduce dramatic shifts in the scope, content, and influence of marketing in the organization. The authors highlight the implications of an organizationally embedded view of marketing for the future of marketing theory and practice.

The development of the field of strategic management within the last two decades has been dramatic. While its roots have been in a more applied area, often referred to as business policy, the current field of strategic management is strongly, theory, based with substantial empirical research, and is eclectic in nature. This review of the development of the field and its current position examines the field's early development and the primary theoretical and methodological bases through its history. Early developments include Chandler's (1962) Strategy and Structure and Ansoff's (1965) Corporate Strategy. These early works rook on a contingency perspective (fit …

In this study a simulation of an assessment center is developed consisting of videotaped performances of four candidates in three exercises: sales presentation, role-play, and group discussion. To develop the simulation, candidate profiles are constructed which vary along three dimensions: problem analysis and problem solving, interpersonal sensitivity, and planning and organizing. Dimension-specific behaviors are adapted from 173 critical incidents provided by 20 experienced assessors. As a result, scripts are written and enacted by actors. To validate the simulation, experienced assessors evaluate all candidates under optimal conditions. High interrater agreement among these experts (intraclass conelation = .9) and a high correlation …
