Sponsoring The Professional Sales Program: A Win-Win For Students And Companies, Louis J. Zmich, Mark D. Groza, Mya Groza Dec 2017

Sponsoring The Professional Sales Program: A Win-Win For Students And Companies, Louis J. Zmich, Mark D. Groza, Mya Groza

Louis Zmich

This study builds on the literature regarding employer branding and talent acquisition by examining the effect corporate sponsorship of professional sales programs has on prospective employees. Grounded in theories of organizational reputation, brand equity and corporate sponsorship, it is proposed that sponsoring a sales program leads to enhanced student perceptions of the sponsoring firm. To test the study predictions, a natural field experiment involving four semesters of professional sales students is conducted. Results largely confirm the study prediction that sponsorship enhances students’ employment perceptions. The study offers managerial guidance for both professional sales programs and sponsors.

Econometric Modeling Of Regional Electricity Spot Prices In The Australian Market, Michael S. Smith, Thomas S. Shively Dec 2017

Econometric Modeling Of Regional Electricity Spot Prices In The Australian Market, Michael S. Smith, Thomas S. Shively

Michael Stanley Smith

Wholesale electricity markets are increasingly integrated via high voltage interconnectors, and inter-regional
trade in electricity is growing. To model this, we consider a spatial equilibrium model of price formation, where constraints on inter-regional flows result in three distinct equilibria in prices. We use this to motivate an econometric model for the distribution of observed electricity spot prices that captures many of their unique empirical characteristics. The econometric model features supply and inter-regional trade cost functions, which are estimated using Bayesian monotonic regression smoothing methodology. A copula multivariate time series model is employed to capture additional dependence --- both cross-sectional and serial --- in …

Between Kinship And Commerce: Fiduciaries And The Institutional Logics Of Family Firms, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington, Vanessa Strike Dec 2017

Between Kinship And Commerce: Fiduciaries And The Institutional Logics Of Family Firms, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington, Vanessa Strike

Brooke Harrington

In this study we explore how the institutions of kinship and commerce are integrated within family businesses.
Previous research shows that family firms’ characteristic synthesis of institutional logics often unravels during
intergenerational successions; however, it remains unclear how this process can be arrested, or by whom. Through
inductive analysis, we offer a novel insight: outside advisors can act as surrogates for family in this integrative
role. Specifically, we identify fiduciaries—professionals with special client obligations—as key actors in preserving
family firms’ viability as commercial enterprises and kinship groups. Our findings contribute to theories of family
businesses, professions, and institutions.

The Development Of A Competency Model And Its Implementation In A Power Utility Cooperative: An Action Research Study, Babu P. George Dec 2017

The Development Of A Competency Model And Its Implementation In A Power Utility Cooperative: An Action Research Study, Babu P. George

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to trace the development of a competency model in a medium-scale
power utility company located in the Midwest USA.
Design/methodology/approach – The model is developed based on insights drawn from the literature,
company documents, and primary interviews with the key company stakeholders. The research process was
carried out according to the guidelines of action research methodology.
Findings – Competencies required for employees were identified and operationally defined. Existing
competencies were inventoried and superimposed on the required competencies. Gaps in competency
presence and proficiency levels were noticed. The competencies required for effective performance …
