Divisional Multimarket Contact Within And Between Multiunit Organizations, Arthurs Kalnins Feb 2004

Divisional Multimarket Contact Within And Between Multiunit Organizations, Arthurs Kalnins

Arturs Kalnins

The theory of multimarket contact has important but uninvestigated implications for interactions among a firm's divisions because divisions often meet and even compete in multiple geographical and product markets. I hypothesize that firms with incentives to induce competition among divisions will act to reduce levels of multimarket contact among those divisions. Further, I predict that, in markets with substantial uncertainty, firms will increase divisional multimarket contact. I find support for these hypotheses in the setting of the franchised fast-food industry.

The Relationships Between An Individual's Margin In Life And Readiness For Change, Susan R. Madsen, Duane Miller, Cameron John, Emily Warren Feb 2004

The Relationships Between An Individual's Margin In Life And Readiness For Change, Susan R. Madsen, Duane Miller, Cameron John, Emily Warren

Susan R. Madsen

Effectively managing change is one of the most critical challenges organizations today face. Increasing the readiness for change (RFC) of employees may be one of the most important interventions an organization can initiate. This study investigated the relationship of employee RFC and margin in life (MIL). It studied the relationship of various demographics to employees' MIL. Results suggest there is a significant correlation between MIL and RFC, age, educational level, and length of employment.

Academic Service-Learning In The Human Resource Development Curriculum, Ovilla Turnbull, Susan R. Madsen Feb 2004

Academic Service-Learning In The Human Resource Development Curriculum, Ovilla Turnbull, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Service-learning is a relatively new pedagogy which uses service activities to support traditional teaching methods, giving students a better understanding and ability to remember and carry out functions/skills taught in class. Although its use in an HRD course has rarely been reported in the literature, the teaching methods appear to be ideal for instilling in students the skills and/or traits necessary to be successful in HRD (e.g., intellectual versatility, adult learning insight, and industry understanding).

A Resource Granularity Framework For Estimating Opportunity Costs, Shyam Sunder Jan 2004

A Resource Granularity Framework For Estimating Opportunity Costs, Shyam Sunder

Shyam Sunder

This paper presents a framework to help decisions makers better measure the opportunity cost of resources with differing economic characteristics. After characterizing resources by the intrinsic lumpiness of acquisition (acquisition granularity), storability of benefits (expiration granularity), and control over the rate of consumption of available benefits (consumption granularity), this paper illustrates how these concepts can lead to improved decisions and assessment of observed practices.

The Utility Of Offshoring: A Rawlsian Critique, Julian Friedland Jan 2004

The Utility Of Offshoring: A Rawlsian Critique, Julian Friedland

Julian Friedland

Most prominent arguments favoring the widespread discretionary business practice of sending jobs overseas, known as ‘offshoring,’ attempt to justify the trend by appeal to utilitarian principles. It is argued that when business can be performed more cost-effectively offshore, doing so tends, over the long term, to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number. This claim is supported by evidence that exporting jobs actively promotes economic development overseas while simultaneously increasing the revenue of the exporting country. After showing that offshoring might indeed be justified on utilitarian grounds, I argue that according to Rawlsian social-contract theory, the practice is nevertheless …

Persistent Dependence In Foreign Exchange Rates? A Reexamination, Atreya Chakraborty Jan 2004

Persistent Dependence In Foreign Exchange Rates? A Reexamination, Atreya Chakraborty

Atreya Chakraborty

We test for stochastic long-memory behavior in the returns series of currency rates for eighteen industrial countries using a semiparametric fractional estimation method. A sensitivity analysis is also carried out to analyze the temporal stability of the longmemory parameter. Contrary to the findings of some previous studies alluding to the presence of long memory in major currency rates, our evidence provides wide support to the martingale model (and therefore for foreign exchange market efficiency) for our broader sample of foreign currency rates. Any inference of long-range dependence is fragile, especially for the major currency rates. However, long-memory dynamics are found …

Transformowanie A Rozwój Produktów I Usług, Anna Ujwary-Gil

Anna Ujwary-Gil

What Do The Ibbottson Historical Studies Really Prove About Firm Size, Risk And Return?, Michael Sack Elmaleh Jan 2004

What Do The Ibbottson Historical Studies Really Prove About Firm Size, Risk And Return?, Michael Sack Elmaleh

Michael Sack Elmaleh

I deny that the Ibbottson historical studies prove that small and medium caps outperform large caps because they are more risky. First, I question whether covariance measures are necessarily a good proxy for risk. The higher levels of volatility associated with small and medium cap versus large cap may be a statistical artifact: the greater number of transactions associated with large caps as compared to small caps may account for this difference. Secondly, higher returns on small and medium caps may be a function of less efficient information distribution for these securities as compared to large caps. Finally, can we …

Zum Stand Der Elektronischen Kooperation - Fallstudien, Muster Und Handlungsempfehlungen, Enrico Senger Jan 2004

Zum Stand Der Elektronischen Kooperation - Fallstudien, Muster Und Handlungsempfehlungen, Enrico Senger

Enrico Senger

Evaluation Of Frontline Demonstration On Mustard In Sunderbans, West Bengal, Ganesh Chandra, R L. Sagar

Ganesh Chandra

Mustard is one of the most important oi lseeds crop in West Bengal, which plays a major role in supplementing the income of small and marginal farmers of Sunderbans. One of the major constraints of traditional mustard farming is low productivity of local varieties. To replace this anomaly, Krishi Vigyan Kendra of CIFRI has conducted frontline demonstration at adopted farmers’ field in four development blocks viz. Kakdwip, Namkhana, Patharpratima and Kulpi of Sunderbans, West Bengal. Cultivation of high yielding varieties of mustard viz. Bhagirathi (RW-351), Sanjukta asech (4C-6-3/II), Jhumka (NC-1), Seeta (B-85) and Binoy (B-9) shows percentage increase of 57.51, …

Shaping The Body & Soul Of The Board: The Role Of Institutional Pressures, Alfredo Enrione, Fernando Zerboni Jan 2004

Shaping The Body & Soul Of The Board: The Role Of Institutional Pressures, Alfredo Enrione, Fernando Zerboni

Alfredo Enrione

The world is witnessing a massive and generalized effort to improve the practices within the board of directors. However, there is still little understanding of the processes by which these new practices or models are adopted. Moreover, there is a growing consensus that the most important challenge is improving not only the more structural and visible attributes of the board but the internal dynamics that are much harder to monitor by a third party. This work seeks to bring some light into this discussion by analyzing the role of the environment in the adoption of specific board features. We propose …

Aggregate Consumption Spending, The Stock Market, And Asymmetric Error Correction, Lonnie K. Stevans Jan 2004

Aggregate Consumption Spending, The Stock Market, And Asymmetric Error Correction, Lonnie K. Stevans

Lonnie K. Stevans

In this study, we show how changes in wealth resulting from unanticipated changes in the value of equity holdings begin a process whereby households alter consumption growth in order to close the gap between actual and target spending. Because of changing uncertainty or equity price volatility over the stock market cycle, we found the time path of this adjustment to exhibit near random walk behavior during stock market downturns. Conversely, during “boom” periods, e.g. when the value of equities held by households was greater than the threshold, the growth in consumer spending was quick to eliminate the disparity between actual …

Towards A Theory Of Indigenous Development, Ana Maria Peredo, Robert B. Anderson, Craig S. Galbraith, Benson Honig, Leo-Paul Dana Jan 2004

Towards A Theory Of Indigenous Development, Ana Maria Peredo, Robert B. Anderson, Craig S. Galbraith, Benson Honig, Leo-Paul Dana

Robert B Anderson

Indigenous populations throughout the world suffer from chronic poverty, lower education levels, and poor health. The ‘second wave’ of indigenous development, after direct economic assistance from outside, lies in indigenous efforts to rebuild their ‘nations’ and improve their lot through entrepreneurial enterprise. This paper suggests that there is a distinguishable kind of activity appropriately called ‘indigenous entrepreneurship’. We begin by defining the indigenous population and noting some general facts about their numbers and distribution. In an effort to discern the potential for development on indigenous peoples’ own terms, we then explore three frameworks for understanding efforts at development, including indigenous …

Aboriginal Economic Development And Entreprenership, Robert B. Anderson, Robert G. Giberson Jan 2004

Aboriginal Economic Development And Entreprenership, Robert B. Anderson, Robert G. Giberson

Robert B Anderson

This chapter explores economic development and entrepreneurship among Aboriginal' people in Canada as a particular instance of Indigenous entrepreneurship and development activity worldwide. In tum, Indigenous entrepreneurship, and the economic development that flows from it, can be considered a particular sub-set of ethnic entrepreneurship. What makes Indigenous entrepreneurship a particular and distinct instance of ethic entrepreneurship is the strong tie between the process and place - the historic lands of the particular Indigenous group involved. With Aboriginal populations there is also often a strong component of "nation-building," or more correctly re building. This is in contrast with instances of entrepreneurship …
