Organizations deal with employee retention (e.g., retaining employees, stemming attrition, mitigating intent to leave an organization) in a number of ways. Examining the relationship one has with his/her manager, and the leadership style of one’s manager, are valuable factors in retaining employees. LMX (leader-member exchange) is the quality of relationship between leaders/managers and members/employees and is based on trust and reciprocity between parties. Passive leaders avoid management issues and only act when they have no other choices. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between executive servant leadership and job satisfaction in human service nonprofit organizations in southwest Virginia. The problem to be addressed was the leadership deficit in nonprofit organizations and the ability of nonprofit leaders to motivate employees to perform. How Might Servant Leadership Principles Impact Employee Turnover At A Solid Waste Management Firm?, Clifton Thacker

This study analyzed the impact servant leadership had on employee turnover at an SWM firm. Many authors were reviewed with literature pertaining to leadership, servant leadership, and SWM. Multiple interviews were conducted with current personnel at an SWM firm that utilizes servant leadership in order to gain a better understanding of the experiences of these employees. The results of the study indicate that servant leadership has a profoundly positive impact on employee satisfaction and, consequently, decreased turnover. The researcher developed many themes based on data analysis, which included culture, accountability, support, and commitment.

Since the military is undergoing substantial change as it adjusts to the changing nature of war and a fluid world situation, Field Grade Officers (FGO) must actively develop and hone their leadership behavior by implementing effective feedback counsel. They must also increase their leadership self-efficacy to confidently accomplish specific leadership tasks and challenges. This study analyzed job satisfaction as it relates to employees within the Department of the Navy in an effort to better understand the role that supervisory leadership plays in improving or degrading employee job satisfaction. Multiple interviews were conducted with current and former employees in order to gainer deeper understanding of the experiences of these employees. The results indicate that styles such as servant leadership and transformational are seen as having a more positive impact on employee job satisfaction than other styles including trait and transaction.
