Kelly Fraction Estimation For Multiple Correlated Bets, William Chin
Kelly Fraction Estimation For Multiple Correlated Bets, William Chin
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
It is well-known that expected portfolio growth is maximized by maximizing
expected logarithmic utility. This investment criterion is known as Kelly betting.
It has many optimality properties but is considered to be risky. Blackjack
teams and other advantage gamblers practice a fraction of the Kelly optimal to
decrease risk. Some hedge fund managers are thought to practice according to
Kelly principles. We use a continuous multivariate Geometric Brownian motion
model and present an interval estimate for the historical fraction for a portfolio
of correlated bets, possibly including a risk-free asset. Historical data comes
from a range of sources and the …

Sports Betting And Indian Gaming: Overcoming Barriers To Market Entry And Integration Of Sports Books Into Tribal Casinos, Steve Light
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Abstract
Even before the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision In Murphy v. NCAA (2018) permitting states to legalize sports wagering, the biggest brand-names in gaming worldwide were positioning themselves to capitalize on the fan base for America’s most recognizable sports leagues.
Sports wagering already is up and running in five states; analysts predict that more than half the states will legalize it within five years. Many will be among the 29 states that currently have casinos owned and operated by American Indian tribes in this $32.4 billion market segment.
There is no firm sense and little data pointing to …

Current Problem Gambling Countermeasures And Responsible Gaming Dissemination Issues In Japan, Naoyuki Nishimura Phd Md
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Activities such as pachinko, pachi-slot and public sports race betting make up Japan’s unique gambling culture. When the “the Gambling Addiction Countermeasures Act” and “the Integrated Resort (IR) Development Act” were passed by the Japanese Diet in July 2018, gambling in Japan has begun the move to a new stage. In preparation of IR developments, there will be measures enacted at the national government level on problem gambling from existing activities, and discussions have started on how to prevent the negative influence created from casinos in the IRs. The problem gaming countermeasures which just started in Japan face many issues …

Betting On Casinos As A Community Benefit: Analyzing Local News Coverage Of The Development Of Casino Gaming In Ohio, Jessalynn Strauss
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
This research examines news coverage of casino gaming in Ohio in the period 2008-2018. Ohio legalized gambling by popular vote in November 2009 and the state now has four casinos and 7 racinos with VLT gaming. This study will use a framing analysis to look at the way that news coverage portrays casinos with respect to social responsibility and their impact on the local community.
With the spread of gambling outside of traditional strongholds such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, many have debated casinos’ benefit to communities, and some have criticized casinos’ impact on localities. This study will assess …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Music festivals have become culturally salient within the new age of consumer participatory culture. Festivals fundamentally warrant a rite of passage by providing consumers a unique, all-encompassing experience. This critical media industry study examines the music festival industry and its’ usage of lore as industry held logics based off of perceptions of consumer wants and desires that calcify within the industry (Havens and Lotz, 2012). Why Do Employees Break Rules? Understanding Organizational Rule-Breaking Behaviors In Hospitality, Ankita Ghosh, Cass Shum
Hospitality Faculty Research
This study explores employees’ organizational rule-breaking behaviors in the hospitality industry. Unlike the majority of hospitality literature which suggest rule-breakers are deviant, a growing stream of management research suggested that intentions behind rule-breaking behaviors among organizational employees include self-interest, to increase work efficiency, to help a subordinate or a coworker, and to provide good customer service. Our study extends the research on rule-breaking not only by studying the intentions of hospitality employee rule-breaking behaviors, but also by exploring the types of rules broken and the possible consequences of such behaviors. Eighty hospitality workers studying at a public university in the …
From Casino Wars To Casino Capitalism: Sovereignty And Gaming In Macau, Tim Simpson
From Casino Wars To Casino Capitalism: Sovereignty And Gaming In Macau, Tim Simpson
Occasional Papers
In 1999, after nearly half a millennia of administration, Portugal returned the citystate of Macau to the People’s Republic of China, and it was designated a Special Administrative Region under the PRC’s “one country, two systems” regime. Less than a decade after the handover Macau was transformed into the world’s most lucrative site of casino gaming, and today the city is visited by more than 35 million annual tourists, the majority of whom are from mainland China. Macau’s remarkable economic expansion may be in part attributed to the city’s ambiguous sovereignty, an endemic characteristic which dates to the city’s founding …

Prosocial Rule-Breaking To Help Coworker: Nature, Causes, And Effect On Service Performance, Cass Shum, Ankita Ghosh, Anthony R. Gatling
Hospitality Faculty Research
We examine the nature, antecedents, and service performance consequence of employees’ prosocial rule-breaking behaviors with a motive to help coworkers (PSBC) in two studies. Using a qualitative exploratory study with a sample of 80 hospitality workers, we showed the prevalence of PSBC in the hospitality industry, which includes four unique forms. Next, we examined the causes and effect of PSBC by drawing on the social cognitive theory. We proposed that coworkers PSBC and employees’ moral courage interactively predict employee PSBC, which has a negative effect on service performance. We tested the hypotheses using a time-lagged survey study with a sample …
