Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

This essay engages in a reflexive analysis of how to say something "officially recognized as intellectual" about some person who is emotively sensational. This essay has two parts: (a) a position statement on hero/ines that invites engagement in a process of rediscovery and reconsideration how the privileged, intellectual class can write biographies that, in C. Wright Mills' terms, truly integrates the subject's biography with the historical and socially constructed essence of his or her being; and (b) an inquiry into whether celebrated individuals are truly worthy of respect and in what ways he or she may be reactionary, reformative (playing …

With the end of the National Football League's regular season, we have come to the end of another season of despair for the Tampa Bay Bucs. New levels of futility were achieved as the Bucs turned in their tenth consecutive season in which they have lost at least ten games. And the Bucs don't just lose, they lose in new and creative ways. This is a team of legendary incompetence, whose poor performance over a sustained period of time is earning them a special place in the history of the NFL.

Two weeks ago "Red" Barber died in Tallahassee. Since 1981 Barber has been a familiar voice on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. Each Friday morning at 7:35 "Red" sitting in his home in Tallahassee had a warm and interesting conversation with Bob Edwards, the Colonel. He would talk about the sports of the week, his recollections of sports past, and very often the state of his garden and the foliage of Tallahassee.

Most of Wednesday it looked as though it would be the year of the bridesmaids in the World Series. But not quite. Francisco Cabrerra and Jose Lind saw to that. Lind's error extended the ninth inning, and Cabrerra's single ended it. Facing certain defeat the Atlanta Braves scored three runs to win 3-2 and the Pirates remain bridesmaids for the third consecutive year. Earlier in the day Toronto got a major monkey off its back by eliminating the Oakland A's.

Probably the most famous halftime speech ever given was the Knute Rockne, "Win One for the Gipper" classic, which many of us have seen delivered by Pat O'Brien in "The Knute Rockne Story." It is remembered as well because the Gipper was played by the somnambulant President of the United States who incessantly evoked its memory for whatever feeble cause he was pushing. As motivational speeches go this one has no peer.

Over the past three months an antitrust suit was before a jury of eight women in a Minneapolis Federal Court. Eight players brought suit against the National Football League claiming that the Plan B free agency system was illegal.The verdict rendered last week ruled Plan B too restrictive and awarded four of the players considerable damages, while leaving the NFL to pay the legal fees for both sides. These fees are in excess of $10M. Other matters of free agency arising from the decision are yet to be ruled upon by the judge.

The immediate issues are Mr. Vincent's use of his powers to force a realignment, an attempt he abandoned earlier this week, and his renewed challenge to the power of the superstations like WGN and TBS. Throw in a few accusations of illegal substance use and you have the international athletics scene in a nutshell.
