New England Journal of Public Policy

This article investigates state-level export programs in response to the emerging new economic and political regime of Europe 1992. Japan As A Capital Exporter And The World Economy (Occasional Papers No. 18. Group Of Thirty, New York) By Masaru Yoshitomi, Ademola Bamidele

Economic and Financial Review

Sound financial system is considered central to the development of trade either in an economy or internationally. This fact informed the author of this Occasional paper in examining and bringing into focus how Japan became an international creditor i.e. net capital exporter in the world financial system aside from her leading role in world trade. This position was attained through a combination of many factors, some of which were sectoral savings-investment imbalances and the co-existence of high-employment government deficit and the high-employment current account surplus in the 1970s and 1980s. The author thus, traced the historical evolution of Japan• s …

Sporting Heroes As Role Models, Richard C. Crepeau May 1993

Sporting Heroes As Role Models, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Charles Barkley has been in our face now for several weeks with a commercial for one of those tiresome shoe companies in which he announces: "I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model... parents should be role models...I am paid to wreak havoc on a basketball court. Just because I can dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids."

Compassionate Capitalism, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Compassionate Capitalism. Nice phrase isn't it. It is a phrase used in a recent book title: Compassionate Capitalism: Helping Others Help Themselves. It is also used in the name of a new Foundation: the Compassionate Capitalism Foundation, a nonprofit group based in Muskegon, Michigan. The book and the foundation are the creations of Rich DeVos, he's the boss, of the Orlando Magic.

The Death Of Jim Valvano, Richard C. Crepeau May 1993

The Death Of Jim Valvano, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Normally the Catholic Church requires a certain passage of time, as well as evidence of the performance of three miracles, before anyone is presented for canonization to sainthood. Apparently ESPN's standards are not quite that high, as the network canonized Jim Valvano last week following his death. Although Valvano had at least one miracle to his credit, the winning of the 1983 NCAA basketball championship with the miracle shot against Houston as time ran out, it still seems unlikely that he is the stuff out of which saints are made.

In this research, an exploratory approach is implemented to assess the support of personnel managers for the theory of AA as well as the mechanisms designed to carry it out. Also, the relationship to Supreme Court decisions, relevant legislation, and numerous demographic, attitudinal, and organizational variables are examined for their impact on Affirmative Action attitudes. A questionnaire was utilized to assess support for AA and its correlates. The majority of personnel managers indicate support for both AA in theory and the mechanisms required …
