The Decline Of The Magic And The Nba In Transition, Richard C. Crepeau May 1999

The Decline Of The Magic And The Nba In Transition, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This past week has been a difficult one for Orlando Magic fans. After going through a short season in reasonably good style the Magic went out of the playoffs in short shrift. This was not only a sign that the Magic have major problems they must face in the weeks ahead, but it also was one of many indications that in the post-Michael NBA major changes are taking place.

In Memoriam Joe Dimaggio, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I met a man today who claims he once saw Joe DiMaggio drop a fly ball. In a game. I didn't know whether to believe him or not. Then he told me that Joe hit a 10th inning home run to win the game. This gave the story a modicum of credibility. Yes, I suppose it could have happened.

John Elway, Richard C. Crepeau May 1999

John Elway, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I have a friend who was at Stanford at the same time as John Elway. He too was an athlete but not in one of the high profile money sports. Over the years he has come to detest John Elway especially the Denver quarterback's success. My friend claims that with every million dollars and every big game victory, Elway is making him look bad. My friend is yet to win a big game or make a million, although he continues to have hope for the lottery.

Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary May 1999

Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary

Ecological Impacts of Animal Agriculture Collection

A 10-year riparian grazing study was conducted on a cold, mountain meadow riparian system in central Idaho in response to cattle grazing-salmonid fisheries conflicts. Six pastures were established along Stanley Creek to study the effects on riparian habitat of no grazing, light grazing (20-25% utilization), and medium grazing (35-50%) during late June. Stream channels narrowed, stream width-depth ratios were reduced, and channel bottom embeddedness decreased under all 3 grazing treatments as the area responded to changes from heavier historic grazing use. Streambank stability increased and streamside willow communities (Salix spp. L.) increased in both height and cover under all 3 …

Silent Messages In Negotiation: A Descriptive Study Of Negotiators' Perceptions Of The Role Of Nonverbal Communication In Multi-National Business Negotiations, Yun Chu

This study specifically explored the perceived importance of the following nonverbal factors in the negotiation process: proxemics (location and negotiation site), physical arrangement (seating and furniture arrangement), and kinesics (eye contact, facial expressions and gestures). The findings show that the negotiators' perception about the three categories and their role in negotiation are consistent with nonverbal communication theory.

Columbine And Jock Culture, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If you are like me you are already weary, or just wary, of the endless analysis of the Colorado high school shootout that have blanketed the media over the past few days. The cable news networks seem to have found something worthy of their attention now that they no longer have Bill and Monica, and have become bored with the video game war in Serbia.

Children's Attitudes Toward Television Advertising: A State Of The Art Review, Heidi L. Haskins

Honors Theses

The issue of children and advertising came to light in the 1970s and has continued to be a topic of much discussion ever since. In started in the 1970s when the Action for Children's Television petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to eliminate all commercials from children's TV programs. Then in January 1973, the major networks agreed to reduce commercial time in children's weekend programs from 16 minutes an hour to 12 minutes an hour. The survey investigated various elements of quality improvement programs in use among U.S. rail carriers, including program design and subsequent successes. Perhaps due to the heavy competition within the transportation industry, it was found that the vast majority of U.S. rail respondents did indeed utilize formal quality assessment and improvement programs, makingthisan interesting industry segment to study. The survey findings are summarized in the article.
