The Provenances And Postscripts Of 1989, Jokubas Salyga Sep 2023

The Provenances And Postscripts Of 1989, Jokubas Salyga

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The books under review exemplify some of the finest recent work on the historically informed political economy of Central and Eastern Europe. While different in their conceptual frameworks and geographical foci, the titles converge in the advancement of nuanced and convincing arguments, displaying both theoretical acuity and empirical depth to great effect. Bartel, Fabry, and Pula all share a resolute dedication to illuminating the under-explored provenances of neoliberalism and/or globalization in the region, that predate the annus mirabilis of 1989. Their contributions situate the ‘Eastern bloc’ states within the contours of evolving global political economy and the existential crises engulfing …

The degree to which the media report a health emergency affects the seriousness with which the people respond to combat the health crisis. Engagement from local newspapers in the US has received scant scrutiny, even though there is a sizable body of scholarship on the analysis of COVID-19 news. We fill this void by focusing on the Rio Grande Valley area of the US-Mexico border. To understand the differences, we compared such local news coverage with the coverage of a national news outlet. After collecting the relevant news articles, we used sentiment analysis, rapid automatic keyword extraction (RAKE), and co-occurrence …

Exempting Battery Electric Vehicles From Traffic Restrictions: Impacts On Market And Environment Under Pigovian Taxation, Xu Hu, Zhaojun Yang, Jun Sun, Yali Zhang Dec 2021

Exempting Battery Electric Vehicles From Traffic Restrictions: Impacts On Market And Environment Under Pigovian Taxation, Xu Hu, Zhaojun Yang, Jun Sun, Yali Zhang

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

In busy metropolitan areas, traffic restrictions based on the last digits of license plates effectively ease traffic jams and improve air quality. Recently, policy-makers in China exempted battery electric vehicles (BEV) from traffic restrictions to promote their diffusion in place of conventional vehicles (CV). To examine the impacts of such an exemption on consumers and manufacturers as well as the environment, this study models the duopoly competition between BEV and CV manufacturers as a Cournot game. The numerical analyses compare three traffic restriction policies concerning BEV and CV, and reveal the pros and cons of each. In particular, the BEV-exempted …

The Workplace Integration Of Veterans: Applying Diversity And Fit Perspectives, Jorge A. Gonzalez, Joseph Simpson Jul 2020

The Workplace Integration Of Veterans: Applying Diversity And Fit Perspectives, Jorge A. Gonzalez, Joseph Simpson

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Military veterans are a valuable part of the human capital resource pool. Nonetheless, veterans often struggle with their transition into civilian life and workplaces. This problem often limits the extent to which work organizations utilize their talents. Here, we briefly review relevant work from outside the management field and nascent work within the field to build a conceptual model for understanding the integration of veterans into the workplace. We do this by applying diversity and person-environment fit perspectives. A diversity standpoint helps us to understand veterans as a social group and their inclusion in the workplace, while the person-environment fit …

Abuse of information entrusted to organizations can result in a variety of privacy violations and trust concerns for consumers. In the event of violations, a social media brand or organization renders an apology – a form of social account – to alleviate users’ concerns and maintain user membership and engagement with the platform. To explore the link between apology offered by a social media brand or organization and the users’ trust dynamics in the brand’s services, we study how organizational integrity can contribute to reducing individuals’ privacy concerns whiles increasing or repairing their trust. Drawing on organizational behavioral integrity literature, …

Understanding The Relationship Between Smartphone Addiction And Well-Being: The Mediation Of Mindfulness And Moderation Of Hedonic Apps, Murad Moqbel Jan 2020

Understanding The Relationship Between Smartphone Addiction And Well-Being: The Mediation Of Mindfulness And Moderation Of Hedonic Apps, Murad Moqbel

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The advent of handheld devices such as smartphones has changed the way we connect, navigate, and entertain and has been recognized as a revolution in information and communication technologies (ICT). Despite the plethora of benefits of this new technology, concerns have been raised about the unintended adverse consequences to well-being in the form of addictive use. Past research has linked smartphone addiction to negative consequences, but it remains unclear how, why, and when (i.e., under what conditions) smartphone addiction, in turn, is related to well-being. This study attempts to fill this void by addressing these questions through the lens of …

A Dynamic Stochastic Frontier Model With Threshold Effects: U.S. Bank Size And Efficiency, Pavlos Almanidis, Mustafa U. Karakaplan, Levent Kutlu Oct 2019

A Dynamic Stochastic Frontier Model With Threshold Effects: U.S. Bank Size And Efficiency, Pavlos Almanidis, Mustafa U. Karakaplan, Levent Kutlu

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

Common/Single frontier methodologies that are used to analyze bank efficiency and performance can be misleading because of the homogeneous technology assumption. Using the U.S. banking data over 1984-2010, our dynamic methodology identifies a few data-driven thresholds and distinct size groups. Under common frontier assumption, the largest banks appear to be 22% less efficient on average than how they are in our model. Also, in the common frontier model, smaller banks seem to be relatively more efficient compared to their larger counterparts. Hence, common policies or regulations may not be well-balanced about controlling the banks of different sizes on the spectrum.

Globalization Tropes In Films: A Focus On Crazy Rich Asians, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Deniz Atik

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Learning from and encouraged by the impacts of film film-based windows into globalization phenomena, in this issue of MGDR, we have focused on the film Crazy Rich Asians. In the popular press, the movie has been hailed as a major cultural point of departure for Hollywood as well as panned as just an Asian Asian-themed romantic comedy that celebrates the super-rich of Asia. The buzz around this movie does, however, indicate a slight bend in the curve of the geopolitics of the globalization discourse – and hence our decision to feature a number of academically insightful reviews of this movie …

Labor Law And Innovation Revisited, Bill B. Francis, Incheol Kim, Bin Wang, Zhengyi Zhang Sep 2018

Labor Law And Innovation Revisited, Bill B. Francis, Incheol Kim, Bin Wang, Zhengyi Zhang

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines the impact of changes in job security on corporate innovation in 20 non-U.S. OECD countries. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we provide firm-level evidence that the enhancement of labor protection has a negative impact on innovation. We then discuss possible channels and find that employee-friendly labor reforms induce inventor shirking and a distortion in labor flow. Further investigation reveals that the negative relation is more pronounced in 1) firms that heavily rely on external financing, 2) firms that have high R&D intensity, 3) manufacturing industries, and 4) civil-law countries. Our micro-level evidence indicates that enhanced employment protection impedes …

Estimation Of Cost Efficiency Without Cost Data, Levent Kutlu, Ran Wang Mar 2018

Estimation Of Cost Efficiency Without Cost Data, Levent Kutlu, Ran Wang

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the advantages of conduct parameter games is that they enable estimation of market power without total cost data. In line with this, we develop a conduct parameter based model to estimate the firm specific “marginal cost efficiency” and conduct without using total cost data. The marginal cost efficiency is an alternative measure of efficiency that is based on deadweight loss. We illustrate our methodology by estimating firm-route-quarter specific conducts and marginal cost efficiencies of U.S. airlines for Chicago based routes without using route-level total cost data.

Social Network Sites In Businesses: Combating Technostress, Murad Moqbel, Valerie L. Bartelt Jan 2018

Social Network Sites In Businesses: Combating Technostress, Murad Moqbel, Valerie L. Bartelt

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This survey research examined social networking sites (SNS) internal to the company to determine how SNS use affects attitudes, and ultimately turnover intentions. We hypothesize that due to social capital, emotional dissonance, and conservation of resource theories, work SNS use will decrease work isolation, which will decrease work-related attitudes and increase turnover intentions. Due to social capital theory, we propose that work SNS use will decrease work isolation. Due to emotional dissonance theory, we hypothesize that work isolation will decrease positive emotions and job satisfaction, and increase job tensions, such as work stress. All three of these factors will increase …

Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Traditional And Emerging Ethical Concerns In Advertising, Jennifer Lemanski Jan 2018

Traditional And Emerging Ethical Concerns In Advertising, Jennifer Lemanski

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ethical issues surrounding advertising have been well-discussed. However, over time and alongside societal and media changes, different questions have moved to the forefront in the discussion on advertising ethics. This paper presents an overview of traditional ethical issues of importance in the United States, and analyzes the changes that have come about as a result of newer, more interactive media for ad placements. Although many of the traditional ethical dilemmas remain, the more personalized and interactive nature of new media and an expanded landscape for advertisers to stake their claims have introduced new issues that were previously not of concern, …

Enterprise Social Media Use And Impact On Performance: The Role Of Workplace Integration And Positive Emotions, Murad Moqbel, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Organizations struggle to find ways to improve employees’ performance. To date, little research has empirically examined the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. Using social capital theory and the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions as our theoretical framework, we investigate the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. We tested our research model by collecting data from employees working for a large information technology firm in the Midwestern United States and analyzing the data using a structural equation modeling approach. The results suggest that enterprise social media use can increase workplace integration, which …

Social Media Sites Use Intensity And Job Burnout Among The U.S. And Thai Employees, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, Murad Moqbel, Sandra Gutierrez-Wirsching

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research explored the effect of social network sites (SNS) use intensity in the workplace on three aspects of job burnout. The data were collected from non-teaching employees from universities in the U.S. (N = 174) and in Thailand (N = 182). Results from partial least squares regression revealed some evidence of the u-curve relationship between SNS use intensity and depersonalization in both countries. However, the u-curve relationship between SNS use and lack of personal accomplishment is only supported in U.S. samples. This suggests that while a moderate degree of SNS use at work tends to lower burnout, a high …

Two hundred forty participants took part in the 15-minute survey, with the option of choosing either online or paper format. This paper provides additional materials and details on how the survey was conducted. Step-by-step explanations are provided for the design, …

Us Airport Ownership, Efficiency, And Heterogeneity, Levent Kutlu, Patrick Mccarthy May 2016

Us Airport Ownership, Efficiency, And Heterogeneity, Levent Kutlu, Patrick Mccarthy

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

All US commercial airports are in the public sector yet not all have the same ownership type. For medium and large hub US airports we use stochastic frontier analysis to analyze the efficiency differences for alternative airport ownership types. We find that while form of ownership may matter for cost efficiency, in general its effect is relatively small. Yet type of public sector ownership does have cost efficiency implications in certain environments. Further, when heterogeneity is not controlled, the results change substantially so that type of ownership matters much more which demonstrates the importance of controlling for cross section heterogeneity.

Intended Continued Use Social Networking Sites: Effects On Job Satisfaction And Performance, Ned Kock, Murad Moqbel, Kevin Barton, Valerie L. Bartelt

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hedonic information systems are those that are used primarily for pleasure. Previous research has established that the intention to use hedonic information systems is explained mainly by perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment, with perceived usefulness to one’s job being given less importance. Facebook could be seen as a hedonic information system. This paper employs a cross-sectional survey of 178 professionals who used Facebook to various degrees. Predictably, the authors’ empirical results show that perceived enjoyment is indeed a much stronger determinant of intended continued Facebook use than ease of use or usefulness to one’s job, explaining a considerable …

The Liquidity Crisis, Investor Sentiment, And Reit Returns And Volatility, Daniel Huerta, Peter V. Egly, Diego Escobari

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

The real estate investment trust (REIT) industry experienced a liquidity crisis resulting from reduced access to credit commitments as banks were restoring their balance sheets during the 2007–2009 financial crisis. Employing generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models, we examine the impact of the liquidity crisis and investor sentiment on REIT returns and volatility over the December 2001 to February 2013 period. We find that the liquidity crisis negatively impacts REIT returns and helps explain increases in volatility; this finding is robust to multiple specifications. We show that investor sentiment is a significant factor in the REIT return-generating process with institutional …

If You Can’T Take The Heat: Cultural Beliefs About Questionable Conduct, Stigma, Punishment, And Withdrawal Among Mexican Police Officers, Jorge A. Gonzalez, Lorena R. Pérez-Floriano

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce the concept of cultural beliefs about questionable conduct, and examine how these beliefs interact with stigma consciousness to influence punishment and two withdrawal behaviors: turnover and absenteeism. We used a sample of Mexican police officers in a border city and implemented a mixed method design, paying attention to the national, occupational, and organizational context of this setting. We conducted a qualitative phase to explore the prevalence and meaning of occupational stigma and four cultural beliefs about questionable conduct: greed, toughness, wariness, and savvy. The results of this phase helped us develop a context-relevant measure of cultural beliefs about …

Drug Violence In Mexico And Its Impact On The Fiscal Realities Of Border Cities In Texas: Evidence From Rio Grande Valley Counties, Akinloye Akindayomi, Sergio Garcia

School of Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examines the potential spillover effects of the Mexican drug war and its associated violence on the fiscal realities of the U.S. border counties. Specifically, we study descriptively the data from the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) counties of the state of Texas, placing it within the broader context of all Texas counties, and find initial evidence of possible ‘silver lining’ spilling over from Mexican drug violence to the U.S. border counties’ fiscal positions. Housing activities increase and property tax reliance decreases in RGV counties relative to other Texas counties (both border and non-border). We anticipate that the findings and …

A Study Of Personal Cloud Computing: Compatibility, Social Influence, And Moderating Role Of Perceived Familiarity, Murad Moqbel, Valerie L. Bartelt, Mohammed Al-Suqri Jan 2014

A Study Of Personal Cloud Computing: Compatibility, Social Influence, And Moderating Role Of Perceived Familiarity, Murad Moqbel, Valerie L. Bartelt, Mohammed Al-Suqri

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Building on a research framework based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), Innovation Diffusion Technology (IDT), and the Technology Adoption Model (TAM), we propose a model integrating compatibility, social influence, and perceived familiarity given the implicit uncertainty of personal cloud. Our model emphasizes the moderating effect of perceived familiarity on the relationships between both perceived compatibility and social influence on behavioral intention. PLS-based structural equation modeling is employed to test the related propositions empirically. Results from a survey, involving 265 university students, reveal that perceived compatibility explains a larger proportion of the variance in behavioral intention; perceived familiarity plays …
