Waging A Global Trade War Alone: The Cost Of Blanket Tariffs On Friend And Foe, Edward J. Balistreri, Christine Mcdaniel

Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review

We use an advanced model of the global economy to consider a set of scenarios consistent with the proposal to impose a minimum 60% tariff against Chinese imports and blanket minimum 10% tariff against all other US imports. The model’s structure, which includes imperfect competition in increasing-returns industries, is documented in Balistreri, Böhringer, and Rutherford (2024). The basis for the tariff rates is a proposal from former President Donald Trump (see Wolff 2024). We consider these scenarios with and without symmetric retaliation by our trade partners. This was particularly true for certain groups, including persons with lower household incomes, younger persons, and persons with construction, installation, or maintenance occupations.

When asked about the impacts of international trade, most rural Nebraskans think it is good for Nebraska’s economy. Residents of the Panhandle are the regional group least likely to think trade is good for the state’s economy.

Power-shifting approaches are increasingly being recognized as practical solutions funders can employ to amplify the voice and agency of grant partners and communities, especially those historically under-resourced and marginalized.

Informed by a literature review and interviews with funders, grant partners, and thought leaders, this article describes four common practices for shifting power to advance equity: embed a racial equity lens into the process to shift power; demonstrate a genuine commitment to communities; give grant partners the power to define success; and embrace an internal systems change orientation.

The Eastern Cape Department of Health (ECDoH) is undergoing a re-engineering process to enhance service efficiency and address organizational inefficiencies, such as a bloated structure and excessive personnel costs. However, employees, as key stakeholders, were not meaningfully engaged in the process. This study investigates the role of stakeholder engagement in the ECDoH's transformative efforts, highlighting its impact on inclusivity, strategic alignment, and transparency. Grounded in a constructivist paradigm, this study adopts a qualitative approach using focus group discussions with 12 participants from diverse stakeholder groups.
