In January 2011, the Tunisian government stepped down after weeks of protests; this was followed by unrest and protests in Egypt against the Egyptian government, leading also to the resignation of its president. Demonstrations in both countries were facilitated in some part by the online social media and related information and communications technologies that impacted the flow of information. The manner in which the information and communication technologies were employed suggests that the uprisings were a form of social information warfare. Incidents of floods which are mainly caused by changes in landuse is fast becoming a city life experience in Ilorin as in most urban centres in Nigeria causing untold hardships and sometimes loss of lives. This extreme hydro-meteorological event is also being exacerbated by climate change which thus calls for adaptive response by residents towards reducing its risks, hence this study. Data used were generated from direct field measurements and questionnaire administration. Descriptive statistics and cross tabulations were used in analyzing the data. Results obtained indicate that most respondents use a wide range of non-structural adaptive response to flood. The …

Waste scavengers are usually perceived as being among the poor, and scavenging is considered a marginal activity. They tend to have low incomes, but can obtained decent earning when they are not exploited by middlemen. This study was conducted in Gwagwalada town with the aim of assessing the socio-economic impact of scavenging on the people. A structured questionnaire was constructed to capture the demographic characteristics of the scavengers, their experiences, types of items scavenged, the economic gains and the challenges being faced. A method is presented for flexibly modelling longitudinal data that provides insight to a central question in psychology theory: the dependency between personality clas- sification and individual performance behavior. Flexibility is achieved by assuming the regression coefficients of random effects models are generated from a time-varying mixture of an unknown but finite number of processes, where the weights attached to the number of processes are parameterised to depend upon an individual’s personality classification. For a given number of mixture components the component processes are constrained distributions and the weights attached to them depend upon time. The method is made robust …

This paper is a report on the findings of a study conducted on a graduate systems engineering course at an urban university in a group learning environment. The course, IEGR 501 Introduction to Advanced Systems Engineering, was a sixteen week course which took students with backgrounds in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and prepared them to understand the systems engineering subject matter more. As the future of education becomes more and more virtual it becomes essential that universities take full advantage of the available tools at their disposal.

In this research we introduce a new class of multivariate probability models to the marketing literature. Known as “copula models”, they have a number of attractive features. First, they permit the combination of any univariate marginal distributions that need not come from the same distributional family. Second, a particular class of copula models, called “elliptical copula”, have the property that they increase in complexity at a much slower rate than existing multivariate probability models as the number of dimensions increase. Third, they are very general, encompassing a number of existing multivariate models, and provide a framework for generating many more. …

Cycling is attracting renewed attention as a mode of transport in western urban environments, yet the determinants of usage are poorly understood. In this paper we investigate some of these using intraday bicycle volumes collected via induction loops located at ten bike paths in the city of Melbourne, Australia, between December 2005 and June 2008. The data are hourly counts at each location, with temporal and spatial disaggregation allowing for the impact of meteorology to be measured accurately for the first time. This paper is a report on the findings of a study conducted on a doctoral level virtual course utilizing Second Life for usability and interaction. The project from this course allowed for further exploration of training servicemen from other nations in decision making techniques to include a level of familiarization with various technologies.
