Assessors And Use Of Assessment Centre Dimensions: A Fresh Look At A Troubling Issue, Filip Lievens May 2001

Assessors And Use Of Assessment Centre Dimensions: A Fresh Look At A Troubling Issue, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Previous studies on the construct validity of assessment centres have generally produced puzzling results. The premise of this study is that these prior studies were relatively one-sided. Actually, most previous studies were field studies, which typically used the multitrait-multimethod approach to distinguish between two sources of variance (i.e., exercises and dimensions). Therefore, this study aims to shed light on the issue of assessment centre construct validity by addressing substantive and methodological concerns inherent in previous research. In this study, 85 industrial and organizational psychology students and 39 managers rated videotaped assessment centre candidates in three exercises on six dimensions. Results …

The USN has Issued a letter of reprimand to the commander and is allowing him to leave the Navy with full pension based on his current rank, as opposed to authorizing a court-martial that would have rendered the commander liable to very serious criminal charges and sentences. At Issue have been the effects of the adjudication on military personnel aware of the adjudication.

The Effects Of Equal Opportunity Fairness And Diversity On Work Group Efficacy, Job Satisfaction, And Organizational Commitment In The Military: A Test Of Structural Invariance, Nancy P. Emery Apr 2001

The Effects Of Equal Opportunity Fairness And Diversity On Work Group Efficacy, Job Satisfaction, And Organizational Commitment In The Military: A Test Of Structural Invariance, Nancy P. Emery

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to test the invariance of a structural equation model of equal opportunity fairness (EOF) in the U.S. military across ethnic and gender groups. Military Equal Opportunity Climate Survey (MEOCS) data drawn from four distinct sociocultural groups in the military were tested on a model that fit the MEOCS data drawn from a sample of White men. A series of multi-group analyses was conducted on the established structural model using LISREL 8 (Joreskog & Sorbom, 1996) to determine whether data from sociocultural groups other than White males would fit a White male model. Further …

Understanding The Assessment Center Process: Where Are We Now?, Filip Lievens, Richard J Klimoski Apr 2001

Understanding The Assessment Center Process: Where Are We Now?, Filip Lievens, Richard J Klimoski

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Assessment centers have become widespread in Western Europe, Northern America, and Australia (Newell & Shackleton, 1994). The Task Force on Assessment Center Guidelines (1989) defined assessment centers as “a standardized evaluation of behavior based on multiple inputs. Multiple trained observers and techniques are used. Judgments about behaviors are made, in major part, from specifically developed assessment simulations. These judgments are pooled in a meeting among the assessors or by a statistical integration process” (p. 460).

Assessor Training Strategies And Their Effects On Accuracy, Interrater Reliability, And Discriminant Validity, Filip Lievens Apr 2001

Assessor Training Strategies And Their Effects On Accuracy, Interrater Reliability, And Discriminant Validity, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study compares the effects of data-driven assessor training with schema-driven assessor training and control training. The sample consisted of 229 industrial and organizational psychology students and 161 managers who were randomly assigned to 1 of these training strategies. Participants observed and rated candidates in an assessment center exercise. The data-driven and schema-driven assessor training approaches outperformed the control training on all 3 dependent variables. The schema-driven assessor training resulted in the largest values of interrater reliability, dimension differentiation, and accuracy. Managers provided significantly more-accurate ratings than students but distinguished less between the dimensions. Practical implications regarding the design of …

Leadership Games : Experiential Learning For Organizational Development By Stephen S Kaagan, Response Books, 1999, Pp 187, Price: Rs 225 (Paperback)., Vijay Padaki

IIMB Management Review

T here are two ways of looking at this book. We can look at the 25 exercises that the author has described in near manual form or we may look at the experience of the author backing the exercises. Many trainers and consultants seeking additions or replacements to their wellworn (and worn out) repertoire of experiential exercises will welcome the collection. They will no doubt change the titles, modify the layout, and alter the operating details to display them as original creations, but if they benefit from the exercises, as I am sure they will, it will be a major …

Variations In Organization Science : In Honor Of Donald T Campbell Edited By Joel A C Baum And Bill Mckelvey, Sage, 1999, Pp 452, Price: $ 39. 95., Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

Organisation science, as a field of study, is relatively young. Although the study of human behaviour has a long history, and studies examining human behaviour in organisations were prevalent in the early twentieth century, the field as we know it today has emerged after World War II, particularly during the 1960s. As a result, like any other discipline in its early stages of evolution, organisation science has many competing paradigms jostling for dominance. Organisational ecology (also known as population ecology) is one of the few paradigms that have had a significant influence on the knowledge of organisations.

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari Mar 2001

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari

IIMB Management Review

Organisational structures do not exist in isolation. They presume, depend on, and influence several organisational variables. These include processes (communication, goal setting, conflict resolution, socialisation, leadership building, strategic planning, supporting, team working), behaviour, values, rituals, climate, authority (with which the role holders are imbued) and people (competence, confidence, interpersonal skills, leadership, perceptions about
others). Structure designers tend to ignore this vital reciprocal relationship quite often, leading to ineffective structures and unhappy human beings. An attempt has been made in this article to map the relationship between
organisational structures and processes.

Leadership : Myths And Realities Robert J Allio, 1999, New Delhi, Tata Mcgraw-Hill, Pp 237, Price: Rs 325 (Cloth)., K Unnikrishnan Nair

IIMB Management Review

There has been a spate of books on leadership in the recent past, and most of them promise far more than they deliver, conceptually and practically. Allio's book, however, comes as a pleasant surprise. Conceptually, Allio is rooted well. He doesn't consider leadership as an isolated phenomenon. Nor does he swear by any particular theory, theorist, approach, or paradigm. Leadership, for him, covers both the process of influencing as well as the quality of the influencer. Particularly, Allio emphasises that this process of leadership is a participative process, where, in accordance with the contextual needs, both the followers and the …

Examining The Impact Of Destructive Acts In Marketing Channel Relationships, Jonathan D. Hibbard, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa W. Stern Feb 2001

Examining The Impact Of Destructive Acts In Marketing Channel Relationships, Jonathan D. Hibbard, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa W. Stern

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In virtually all marketing channel relationships, one of the parties eventually will engage in an action that another channel member considers potentially destructive for the relationship. How a particular channel member reacts to such an act has implications for the long-term viability and success of the relationship. On the basis of a large data set collected from both a focal supplier and its independent dealers, the authors classify dealers' responses to a supplier's destructive acts by extending the response 'typology of exit, voice, and loyalty, which is based on Hirschman's seminal writings on responses to decline in organizations and states. …

Identification Of Linkage Between Strategic Group And Performance Of Indian Commercial Banks: A Combined Approach Using Dea And Co-Plot, Prithwiraj Nath, Avinandan Mukherjee, Manabendra Nath

Marketing Faculty Research

This paper explores the linkage between strategic grouping and performance of the Indian banking sector. Strategic grouping and performance were identified using published financial information for all public sector banks. Grouping of Indian public sector banks following comparable financial strategy – with similar asset quality, operational efficiency and profitability was operationalized using the graphical display method of Co-plot.

From their position in the two dimensional conceptual map, banks with identical financial performance formed strategic groups with significant positive linkage between better groups and their superior financial performance, which showed their inherent homogeneity in business policy decisions. Relative performance of the …

Tanggapan Kakitangan Perkhidmatan Awam Terhadap Prinsip-Prinsip Pengurusan Islam, Azlina Abdul Aziz

Student Works (2000-2009)

Job-Related Ethics Of Four-Star Hotel Employees In Kuala Lumpur, Syed Sabeer Ali Ahmed Khan Jan 2001

Job-Related Ethics Of Four-Star Hotel Employees In Kuala Lumpur, Syed Sabeer Ali Ahmed Khan

Student Works (2000-2009)

This research aims to investigate the job-related ethical beliefs of four - star hotel employees in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The results show that the fourdimensional factors model as suggested by Vitell and Muncy (1992) can explain hotel employees' job-related ethics. The result revealed that employees working in departments, which have direct contact with hotel guests such as Food & Beverage, have higher tolerance for unethical behaviours. Significant differences were observed when analyzing the demographic variables (i.e. sex and education level) with the four factors identified including: no harm; unethical behaviours; actively benefiting; and passively benefiting. There were no significant differences …

The Venture Capital Investment Bust: Did Agency Costs Play A Role? Was It Something Lawyers Helped Structure?, Joseph Bankman, G. Marcus Cole

Journal Articles

This Article examines the question of why venture capital firms would continue to raise technology funds, and then invest those funds, when they were certain that the business markets for such investments were overvalued preceding the “crash” of April 2000. We interviewed a number of venture capitalists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and other industry observers in search of an explanation. The explanations offered by key decision makers for the observed investment behavior can be categorized as of three types of theories: agency cost theories, herd behavior and other cognitive bias theories, and non–agency cost theories. Agency cost theories suggest that the activity …

Psychological Mechanisms Underlying Individual Knowledge And Contribution In Learning Organizations, Bin Zhao, Hwee Hoon Tan Jan 2001

Psychological Mechanisms Underlying Individual Knowledge And Contribution In Learning Organizations, Bin Zhao, Hwee Hoon Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although much has been written about how to set up learning organizations, there is a paucity of research on understanding employees’ willingness to learn or contribute knowledge in such activities, a key element in the success of organizational learning. This paper presents models for understanding individuals’ willingness to learn and individuals’ willingness to contribute in organizational settings. Through the examination of the psychological mechanisms underlying individuals’ willingness to learn and to contribute, we will further our understanding on the individual and contextual factors that affect employees’ decision to learn and contribute in organizational learning activities. Drawing from the literature, we …

Social Logic As Business Logic: Guanxi, Trustworthiness And The Embeddedness Of Chinese Business Practices, Wai Keung Chung, Gary Hamilton Jan 2001

Social Logic As Business Logic: Guanxi, Trustworthiness And The Embeddedness Of Chinese Business Practices, Wai Keung Chung, Gary Hamilton

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This chapter explores the nature of Chinese business practices by looking at their social foundations. We argue that the use of an inter-subjective logic based on the norms of social relationships provides an institutional foundation for economic transactions in Chinese business settings. The logic of social relationships-or what we call guanxi logic-is embedded in daily practices of the Chinese business community. Rather than making economic decisions less "economic", relational rules embedded in guanxi places interpersonal business transactions within a prescriptive framework, thereby increasing the calculability of economic outcomes. Guanxi logic is, therefore, a socially meaningful way to enhance economic rationality. …

Chapter 10: Upper-Middle-Class Politics And Policy Outcomes: Does Class Identity Matter?, Herman L. Boschken Jan 2001

Chapter 10: Upper-Middle-Class Politics And Policy Outcomes: Does Class Identity Matter?, Herman L. Boschken

Faculty Publications, School of Management

This chapter in Clark and lipset's book on class in American politics resulted from a multi-day workshop at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in the summer of 1999. The piece reverses the normal causality of class politics. It does not analyze citizens in elections, but government officials creating policies. It asks why policies differ across localities (specifically public transit decisions in 42 U.S. metropolitan areas). It probes how some government officials work with an "upper-middle-class" citizenry in mind, while others do so less. The chapter then tests for differences across localities and finds quite distinct patterns. The chapter …

It is universally recognized that people make the difference to an organization. Hence the type of people recruited by organizations are extremely important. How they are managed at work is influenced by a variety of factors ranging from the size of the organization to government regulations and it's culture and philosophy. The need to have employees identify themselves with the organizational objectives and contribute positively to it's success is the crux of human resource management in general and recruitment in particular. Factors Affecting Work Values Of The Malay Society : A Comparative Study Between Males And Females, Azrina Abdullah Al-Hadi Jan 2001

Factors Affecting Work Values Of The Malay Society : A Comparative Study Between Males And Females, Azrina Abdullah Al-Hadi

Student Works (2000-2009)

The results of previous investigation on work values suggest that the contradictory findings in regard to gender differences may be rooted in variations in the underlying structure of the work-values domain. In present study, work values are regarded as (1) evaluative standards relating to work or the work environment by which individuals discern what is right and (2) the importance of preferences at work. The former is operationally defined as ethical work behavior and attitudes toward religious issues at work. The other definition emphasizes the preferences of workers, between intrinsic values and extrinsic values. Here, the main objectives are to …

Key Factors Predicting The Effectiveness Of Organizational Change, Shreen Ahmad Jan 2001

Key Factors Predicting The Effectiveness Of Organizational Change, Shreen Ahmad

Student Works (2000-2009)

Change management is the process of continually renewing an organization's direction, structure and capabilities to serve the ever-changing needs of the external and internal customers. Mastering strategies for managing change is more important today since the rate of change is greater than at any other time in history. Research shows that many change initiatives, even those undertaken by organizations with the best of intentions, are often destined for failure. It is therefore imperative for organizations to develop and implement strategies for successful organizational change. Many authors have provided guidelines on the principles and practices underlying the effective management of change. …
