Motivated by Google’s technology specifications on Android devices, we consider firms’ decisions on production timing in a co-opetitive supply chain comprising a manufacturer and an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), where the manufacturer acts as the OEM’s upstream contract manufacturer and downstream competitor. We consider the market acceptance uncertainty of key product designs. If a firm decides to implement ex post production strategy (PS), it can delay the production until the market acceptance uncertainty of its product is resolved. Otherwise, ex-ante production strategy (AS) is implemented. We find that, due to the co-opetition, PS does not always benefit either the manufacturer …

Socially responsible policy makers and consumers are pressuring firms to make their supply chains more transparent by disclosing information about their supplier monitoring activities (SMA). Yet, high monitoring costs and the complexity of supply chains pose challenges for firms to effectively monitor their extended supply chain, including both first-tier and lower-tier suppliers. In order to comprehensively evaluate the net benefit from SMA, it is therefore critical to consider potential effects on drivers of additional revenues that may accrue from the disclosure of SMA to consumers.

This study explores the feasibility of miniature shipping container usage within existing intermodal transportation (IT) supply chains. Smaller intermodal container shipments may help realign freight shipments with the most efficient transportation mode, rail. These containers embolden the dimensional domain (DD) of shipping. The shipping container dimensional domain (container size variation and modal fluidity) is widespread and results in shipments that are often larger or more infrequent than needed. The DD impacts transport mode, shipping frequency, shipment velocity, intermodal supply chain accessibility, and regional shipping networks. Purpose — The purpose of this study is to empirically evaluate the relationship between learning culture, workforce level, human capital and operational performance in two diverse supply chain populations, aircraft maintenance and logistics readiness. Design/methodology/approach — Drawing upon competence-based view of the firm and human capital theory, this paper analyzes data from two studies. Findings — The results provide support for the hypothesized model. Workforce level moderates the relationship between learning culture and human capital, and human capital partially mediates the relationship between learning culture and operational performance. Increasing collaboration between suppliers and buyers is a goal of every firm. Researchers have discovered multiple aspects that can affect this level of collaboration including culture. Cultures between firms have been analyzed, however no study has examined how the culture within a firm affects the firm’s collaboration. This study aims to research how the cultural dimensions of in-group collectivism and future orientation can affect firm collaboration and performance. After our analysis, the following relationships were discovered: in-group collectivism and future orientation positively affect collaboration, and collaboration positively affects the individual’s perception of organizational support.

An Exploratory Study Of Airline Passenger Technology Use: A Customer Experience Perspective, Steven Leon

Journal of Transportation Management

Airline passengers have many choices and preferences in the way they interact with airlines. This creates numerous challenges for airlines. This research examines technology preferences by Millennials when interacting with airlines. Seven common airline interaction scenarios were evaluated using repeated measures Analysis of Variance with data collected from an online survey. The results show that Millennial generation airline passengers vary their preferences for technology when interacting with airlines. One intriguing finding of this study is that using mobile devices does not rank high as one of their preferred choices.

Leveraging Railroad Land Grants And The Benefits Accruing In The New Economic Landscape, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill

Unlike most companies, the major railroads in the United States have proven highly resilient to the vicissi- tudes of the market. We argue that this is due neither to the unique nature of rail haulage nor to superior management acumen. Rather this solidity is due to an immense wealth transfer to the railroads in the nine- teenth century that has dramatic impacts in the present. Moreover, the government protection and encouragement that rail grants represent did not end in the nineteenth century. It continues and represents an intangible asset that, while not on railroads’ balance sheet, is very real indeed.

U.S. Federal Regulations And Motor Carrier Profitability, Ahren Johnston

This study explores the impact of recent federal regulations, such as Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA) 2010, Hours of Service Changes, Environmental Regulations, and electronic logbooks on motor carrier profitability. Quarterly data from 2004–2015 from U.S. publicly traded motor carriers isused to estimate the temporal trends on various financial ratios after controlling for general economic and carrier specific characteristics. Results of the analysis reveal that motor carrier profitability was declining between 2004 and 2009 but has been improving since that time.

For years, transportation outsourcing was considered a formal transaction-cost economics decision with little or no consideration for additional factors. This limiting perspective provides the stimulus for the current qualitative study, which examines additional factors affecting the transportation decision. For this article, the equine industry is studied in order to gain a better understanding of additional factors that go into decision- making. In-depthinterviewswithhorseownersandtrainersintheequineindustryrevealedthat,inaddition to a detailed cognitive assessment of transporter capabilities, the outsourcing decision involves a considerableemotionalcomponent. Thesefindingcouldbenoteworthyforanumberofindustries,suchas household goods, museums, fine art (paintings, statues, sculptures), antique furniture (including pianos), collectibles of all kinds, and other high involvement luxury items.

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces clamored over the sides of large troop ships into 4126 landing craft, many of those LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel), and prepared to storm several beaches of northern France in Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day. Preparation for this day started in the early 1942 as companies throughout the United States converted their factories from peacetime to wartime production. In Michigan, all three Chris-Craft Corporation plants quickly converted from pleasure boat building to building boats for the war effort full time. Problem definition: Studies have shown that the behavior of subjects in newsvendor experiments is not consistent with expected profit maximization - an assumption that is often made in operations management literature. Although prospect theory has been established as a popular model of behavioral decision making under uncertainty, it was considered to be inconsistent with observed newsvendor behavior (in particular, the pull-to-center effect) until a recent study proposed a prospect theory model that is consistent with the pull-to-center effect; however, this model's ability in representing newsvendor behavior compared to other plausible prospect theory models is unexplored in the literature.
