Although workplace sexual harassment has likely been around since the conception of workplaces, and sexual harassment has been illegal in the U.S. for decades, it is safe to say that the issue has never received as much attention as it has since the autumn of 2017. High-profile instances of sexual harassment in visible industries such as entertainment, politics, the media, and the nation’s largest businesses have put this issue at the forefront of our national conversations surrounding gender and the workplace. The #metoo stories, shared by millions of women worldwide indicating that they had also experienced sexual harassment or sexual …

This brief gives a four-year update to decide what, if any, progress has been made in women’s leadership within Utah’s nonprofit sector. The brief compares Utah data with national data, reviews the applicable literature, and compares these results to the data in the 2014 brief.

The Gender Wage Gap In Utah, Susan R. Madsen, Janika Dillon, Robbyn T. Scribner

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In 2016, American women earned approximately 20% less than men. This gap has narrowed substantially since 1963, when the Equal Pay Act was passed and women earned 41% less than men; yet a gap persists, and a half century later women are still paid less than men in almost every occupation. In Utah, a woman earns approximately 71 cents per dollar that a man earns (though reports vary, several recent national studies show a gap between 70–71 cents), and according to the American Association for University Women, we have the nation’s fourth-largest gender wage gap for year-round full-time workers. With …

National media and scholars have puzzled over the high levels of plastic surgery among Utah women, and a national magazine even called Salt Lake City the “Vainest City in America.” Many wonder why Salt Lake City, capital of one of the most religious states in the nation, would employ more plastic surgeons per capita than Los Angeles. In fact, two-thirds of Utah Mormon women know someone who has undergone cosmetic plastic surgery. In a state known for its conservative and wholesome values, visitors are surprised at the large quantity of billboards lining Utah’s interstate freeway advertising plastic surgery and other …

Mammography Among Utah Women, Susan R. Madsen, Elyse Barnes, Robbyn T. Scribner

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly occurring cancers among U.S. women and the primary cause of cancer death among women in Utah. Yet, research has found that deaths from breast cancer can be substantially reduced if the tumor is discovered early, and mammography screening is the most effective method for the early detection. However, despite the advantages of mammography screening for reducing mortality, not all women receive screening according to recommended guidelines, and screening rates remain low among certain subpopulations of women. This is also true in Utah; in fact, a recent study showed Utah to be among …

Domestic violence is a serious and widespread issue affecting women and families in Utah. One in three Utah women will experience some form of domestic violence in her lifetime, and our rate is slightly higher than the national average (32.4% vs 28.8%). According to the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, more than 40% of adult homicides in Utah since 2000 have been domestic violence related. Domestic violence is often presumed to refer only to physical violence, but it also includes many other forms of abuse— emotional, verbal, financial, spiritual, digital/online, and sexual. Domestic violence can be perpetrated against anyone regardless of …

Unpaid Care Work Among Utah Women, Susan R. Madsen, Robbyn T. Scribner

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Unpaid work, including childcare, eldercare, housework, and other tasks, is vitally important to the creation of strong families, communities, and nations; in fact, such domestic work has been called “the work that makes all other work possible.” According to the McKinsey Global Institute, the monetary value of women’s unpaid work is estimated to be $10 trillion each year, and women worldwide spend a significantly larger portion of their time than men performing this critical work. This happens for many reasons, including personal values and choices, cultural and social norms, unconscious biases, and specific economic and employment considerations. The global average …

In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) released four research and policy briefs on the status of women in Utah politics, education, nonprofits, and business. These were initially prompted by the Center for American Progress report titled “The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation” that ranked Utah last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. Soon after, a series of other national reports also gave Utah poor rankings, and most used the following four criteria: 1) gender wage gap, 2) educational attainment, 3) …

Poverty Among Utah Women, Susan R. Madsen, Robbyn T. Scribner

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Although Utahans in general experience lower rates of poverty than the national average (11.3% in Utah vs. 14.7% nationwide), Utah women are more likely than Utah men to live in poverty, especially women who are heads of households and/or single parents. Many factors influence the levels of poverty among Utah women. The gender wage gap in Utah is one of the highest in the nation; women are much more likely to work minimum wage jobs, and women in Utah have lower levels of educational achievement—particularly at the bachelor’s degree level and higher—than women across the nation. Utah women within specific …

Nearly one in two women in the U.S. will experience some form of sexual violence victimization in her lifetime (broadly defined), and Utah has the same overall rate. According to the most recent Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice report, when considering more specific definitions, one in three Utah women has been sexually assaulted, and one in six women report having been raped. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, rape occurs in Utah at a rate higher than the national average. Hence, sexual assault is a serious problem within the state.

The purpose of both the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) Research & Policy Brief Series and the Research Snapshot Series is to provide data that can be useful to individuals, groups, organizations, and communities toward efforts to improve the equality and impact of girls and women throughout the state. A host of state rankings has continually listed Utah as one of the worst states in the nation for women. Although we disagree with some of the measures, it remains clear that change is needed to strengthen the impact of Utah women for the good of women themselves, families, communities, …

Why Do We Need More Women Leaders In Central And Eastern Europe?, Susan R. Madsen, Tanja Slišković

The majority of top leadership teams do not fully realize the value of having women in key positions. A large body of research has shown this is the case across all sectors, including business, government, political, nonprofit, and education. Depending on the entity, this may include women in both paid and unpaid roles ranging from positions such as supervisor, coordinator and manager, to school principal, council member, CEO, or board director. Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, but also entities such as legislatures, universities, schools, and city and municipality councils. Organizations will increasingly thrive when both men and women hold …

Is Utah a good place for women to start and run businesses? You may be misled if you rely on what the media has been reporting the past few years about women in Utah. A host of state rankings has continually put Utah as one of the worst states in the nation for women. For example, Utah did not fare well in the WalletHub’s recent “2015’s Best and Worst States for Women’s Equality.” Utah was also included in the New York Post’s “5 Places Women Shouldn’t Spend Their Travel Dollars,” and in 2014 Utah was ranked as the worst state …

Organizations will increasingly thrive when both men and women hold management and leadership roles. This potential for greater thriving is also true for institutions of higher education in the U.S. and around the world. Understanding the value of inclusivity in …

Women, Confidence, And Leadership: What Do Utah Women Leaders Think?, Susan R. Madsen, Lyndee Anderson, Matthew Kelly, Jessica Rodriguez

In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project team collected data from various sources to understand some of the issues in Utah regarding women, confidence, and leadership. Why does this matter? Utah consistently ranks at or near the bottom of national studies on the status of women. For example, in 2013, the Center for American Progress released a report titled“ The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation.” This report ranked Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women holding positions of decision making and leadership.
