Compete To Learn: Toward Cybersecurity As A Sport, Tj Oconnor, Dane Brown, Jasmine Jackson, Bryson Payne, Suzanna Schmeelk
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
To support the workforce gap of skilled cybersecurity professionals, gamified pedagogical approaches for teaching cybersecurity have exponentially grown over the last two decades. During this same period, e-sports developed into a multi-billion dollar industry and became a staple on college campuses. In this work, we explore the opportunity to integrate e-sports and gamified cybersecurity approaches into the inaugural US Cyber Games Team. During this tenure, we learned many lessons about recruiting, assessing, and training cybersecurity teams. We share our approach, materials, and lessons learned to serve as a model for fielding amateur cybersecurity teams for future competition.
The Role Of Expectation–Reality Discrepancy In Service Contracts, Xuying Zhao, Hong Guo, Gangshu (George) Cai
The Role Of Expectation–Reality Discrepancy In Service Contracts, Xuying Zhao, Hong Guo, Gangshu (George) Cai
Information Systems and Analytics
Service contracts are common practice in some industries while being eliminated in others. To investigate this phenomenon, we identify expectation–reality discrepancy (ERD) as a key determinant. A provider's ERD is defined as consumers’ ex-ante expected valuation minus their ex-post realized valuation of the provider's service. Our analysis reveals that providers’ contract strategies critically depend on their ERDs rather than the true service valuations. A provider with a higher ERD is more likely to enforce contracts, regardless of whether the true service valuation is higher than that of the competitor. Providers should enforce contracts only when they have positive ERDs. Furthermore, …
Wireless Mobile Phone Technology, Deregulation Policy, Competition And Economic Welfare In Nigeria’S Telecom Industry: An Analytic Model, Onochie J. Dieli Phd
Wireless Mobile Phone Technology, Deregulation Policy, Competition And Economic Welfare In Nigeria’S Telecom Industry: An Analytic Model, Onochie J. Dieli Phd
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This analytic model is about the Nigerian telecom industry’s structural change caused by the arrival of a new wireless mobile phone technology. Nigeria’s telecom industry transformed from natural monopoly to competitive market as a result of deregulation that occurred in 1999. Under the price regulation using underground or above the ground cable telephone lines, it could run only with the help of government subsidies. This study argues that the arrival of a new telecomm technology was the key to success of Nigeria’s deregulation of its telecom industry. An analysis of a simple microeconomic model shows that with the new wireless …
A Model Of Competition Between Perpetual Software And Software As A Service, Zhiling Guo, Dan Ma
A Model Of Competition Between Perpetual Software And Software As A Service, Zhiling Guo, Dan Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software as a service (SaaS) has grown to be a significant segment of many software product markets. SaaS vendors, which charge customers based on use and continuously improve the quality of their products, have put competitive pressure on traditional perpetual software vendors, which charge a licensing fee and periodically upgrade the quality of their software. We develop an analytical model to study the competitive pricing strategies of an incumbent perpetual software vendor in the presence of a SaaS competitor. We find that, depending on both the SaaS quality improvement rate and the network effect, the perpetual software vendor adopts one …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The past twenty years have been a time of many new technological developments, changing business practices, and interesting innovations in the financial information system (IS) and technology landscape. They have led to the increasing use of prior innovations that have supported e-commerce, and that are now being brought into financial services to support different kinds of improvements to core business processes. This research examines recent changes in the payment sector in financial services, specifically related to mobile payments (m-payments) that enable new channels for consumer payments for goods and services purchases, and other forms of economic exchange. We extend recent …
The Study Of Competitive Priorities And Information Technology Selection: Exploring Buyer And Supplier Performance, Thawatchai Jitpaiboon
The Study Of Competitive Priorities And Information Technology Selection: Exploring Buyer And Supplier Performance, Thawatchai Jitpaiboon
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Competitive priorities are the critical operational dimensions a process or supply chain must possess to satisfy its internal or external customers. The concept of competitive priorities is very important to organizations because it helps them set up achievable goals and it has long been known to be associated with organizational performance. This research introduces an alternative theory to explain the mechanism by which the buying firms and suppliers adopt different competitive priorities as they enter into buyer-supplier relationships and to explore further how technology choices influence the competitive priority adaptation. Using empirical data collected from the Society of Manufacturing Engineer’s …
Pricing And Local-Content Decisions Of A Multinational Firm In A Duopoly Market, Nanqin Liu
Pricing And Local-Content Decisions Of A Multinational Firm In A Duopoly Market, Nanqin Liu
Theses & Dissertations
The internationalization of production requires each multinational firm to determine the local content rate for his product that is made and sold in a foreign country. In this thesis, we investigate the local content rate and pricing decisions for a multinational firm who competes with a local firm in a market without and with a local content requirement (LCR). We develop and solve a two-stage decision problem in which the multinational firm determines his optimal local content rate and the two firms then make their pricing decisions. Our analytical results show that the multinational firm sets a lower local content …
Coordinating A Supply Chain With A Manufacturer-Owned Online Channel: A Dual Channel Model Under Price Competition, Jennifer K. Ryan, Daewon Sun, Xuying Zhao
Coordinating A Supply Chain With A Manufacturer-Owned Online Channel: A Dual Channel Model Under Price Competition, Jennifer K. Ryan, Daewon Sun, Xuying Zhao
Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics: Faculty and Staff Publications
We consider a dual channel supply chain in which a manufacturer sells a single product to end-users through both a traditional retail channel and a manufacturer-owned direct online channel. We adopt a commonly used linear demand substitution model in which the mean demand in each channel is a function of the prices in each channel. We model each channel as a news vendor problem, with price and order quantity as decision variables. In addition, the manufacturer must choose the wholesale price to charge to the independent retailer. We analyze the optimal decisions for each channel and prove the existence of a …

The Pricing Strategy Analysis For The Software-As-A-Service Business Model, Dan Ma, Abraham Seidmann
The Pricing Strategy Analysis For The Software-As-A-Service Business Model, Dan Ma, Abraham Seidmann
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model is a novel way of delivering software applications. In this paper, we present an analytical model to study the competition between the SaaS and the traditional COTS (Commercial off-the-shelf) software. The main research goal is to analyze the pricing strategy of the SaaS in a competitive setting. The model captures the most salient differences between the SaaS and COTS, including their distinct pricing structures, user initial setup costs, system customization levels, and delivery channels. We find that the two could coexist in a competitive market in the long run, and more importantly, we show how the …

The Use Of Strategic Forces To Understand Competitive Advantages Provided By Information Technology, Gerald E. Evans, Clyde Neu
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Porter’s Five Forces model of business strategy is foundational to understanding strategic forces and the role of information technology in the larger strategic framework of an organization. The authors describe how information technology changes the strength and/or influence of the competitive forces in Porter’s model. Furthermore, understanding how specific technologies potentially change specific forces within Porter’s model is the foundation of IT strategy. This theoretical framework of strategic alignment is developed through cases demonstrating how specific technologies change the strategic forces within specific industries and how organizations should take advantage of these changing forces. Empirical evidence for the validity of …

A Framework For Agents Conducting E-Business In A Supply Chain, C.W. Leung, T.N. Wong, Domenic Sculli
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper describes the development of an agent-based framework that supports the purchasing function in supply chain management. The framework has been applied in a case situation for planned order releasing from a manufacturer’s materials requirement planning (MRP) system. The proposed framework incorporates a negotiation protocol that can effectively coordinate the negotiation process between a buyer agent and several supply agents, which may represent the manufacturer and its suppliers respectively. These agents negotiate according to their preferred strategies which aim to conclude a deal that achieves their own objectives. The implementation of the negotiation process involves considerations of the price …
