This article presents a case study of the acquisition of a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system to replace an outdated telephone system at a Midwestern financial services company. In the Midwest retail office of ABC Financial Services, the old Private Branch Exchange (PBX) phone system was incapable of handling customer inquiries during the busy tax return season. The inefficient systems exposed the organization to missed and delayed calls, which lead to a considerable number of customer complaints and lost revenue. Although supply chain management and supply chain integration have become topics found within today’s organization as well as topics for researchers from various disciplines, little research has been completed concerning the linkage between business strategy, supply chain strategy, and the resulting decision which an organization makes to enter into an integration initiative. This paper discusses the experience of one organization in formulating a supply chain strategy consistent with its business strategy. The rapid advance of information technologies has produced a large amount of waste of electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE). WEEE or e- waste, refers to old, end-of-life (EoL) or discarded electronic appliances. The world produces 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste annually (Electronics Take-back Coalition 2009), of which China alone contributes 2 million tons. Technology is widely recognized as an enabler of business models. When the Web appeared in the 1990s, businesses redesigned the ways in which they interacted with their customers. They became global, rather than local, and the world represented an expanded customer base. While the Web has become a fact of life since the 1990s, technology has not lost its ability to introduce new ways of enabling organizations to provide and create value for their customers, as new and inventive ways of interacting with customers continue to appear.
