Gender, Politics, And The Media: An Analysis Of Media Coverage During The 2008 Democratic Presidential Nomination, Janelle Bridson

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This thesis examines media coverage of female politicians. Through conducting background research, a personal interview with a nationally acclaimed political strategist, and a content analysis of 640 online articles published by The New York Times, the thesis presents a thorough review of media coverage. Results revealed that the media did not provide a consistent standard of coverage between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama during the 2008 Democratic Presidential Nomination. The New York Times depicted Obama in a more favorable light than Hillary Clinton. Additionally, Clinton was significantly more likely to be described in terms of her family life, physical appearance …

Social Entrepreneurship: The Ideal Business For Humanity And The Economy, Maya D. Horgan May 2013

Social Entrepreneurship: The Ideal Business For Humanity And The Economy, Maya D. Horgan

Pomona Senior Theses

This essay argues that social entrepreneurship is the most efficient means to generate lasting social change and permanently reduce poverty. Using the support of scholarly research, interviews with experts in the field, and my own qualitative observations, I conclude that traditional aid models that are economically dependent on outside funding, as well as those that simply provide monetary and product contributions in order to sustain the poor or marginalized communities they serve are inherently structured in a way that prevents them from resolving social ills. Despite the influx of aid organizations over past decades, chronic poverty and other serious social …

In Search Of Safe Harbor: Suggestions For The New Rule 506(C), Usha Rodrigues May 2013

In Search Of Safe Harbor: Suggestions For The New Rule 506(C), Usha Rodrigues

Scholarly Works

I devote most of this essay to exploring how, exactly, the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) should go about providing guidelines to implement the statutory requirement that issuers have a reasonable belief that a purchaser is accredited. The SEC has proposed rules, but these rules merely restate what Congress has already required, thus sidestepping Congress’s direction that the agency itself articulate some verification methods. Taking the SEC’s decidedly amorphous proposal to task, I recommend that the SEC offer two nonexclusive safe harbors for issuers to guide them in determining whether a natural person is an accredited investor. The paragraphs below …

An Analysis Of Firearms Training Performance Among Active Law Enforcement Officers, John Thomasson May 2013

An Analysis Of Firearms Training Performance Among Active Law Enforcement Officers, John Thomasson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Firearms proficiency is an implicit expectation, held by the public of police officers, due to presumption that the required firearm training is an adequate preparation for a deadly force encounter. However, anecdotal evidence and available data on police shootings suggest that conventional, unrealistic training methods are wholly inadequate. To present stress into firearms training, some departments have opted for exercises such as physical exertion and shoot-house training as a substitute for realistic simulation of force-on-force confrontations.

To determine whether such exercises are comparable, an observation of performance and heart rate levels was conducted on a group of eight police officers, …

Has Government Tax Policy In Greece Led To A Large Shadow Economy?, Nils Thompson Apr 2013

Has Government Tax Policy In Greece Led To A Large Shadow Economy?, Nils Thompson

Honors Projects in Economics

This capstone investigates the impact that tax policy has on the shadow economy in Greece. Greece has one of the largest shadow economies in the world and the largest in the European Union, with tax evasion being one of the main drivers. While previous research has provided measures of the shadow economy, none matches the shadow economy estimations with policies, laws, and agencies enacted by the government, specifically over the period in time of 1990-2012. This study contributes to the literature by connecting the policies implemented by the government with the size of the shadow economy in Greece, along with …

Understanding And Mitigating The Negative Impacts Of Product Recalls In The Global Supply Chain, Emily Carow Apr 2013

Understanding And Mitigating The Negative Impacts Of Product Recalls In The Global Supply Chain, Emily Carow

Honors Projects in Management

Product recalls can be detrimental to any company; the event can be costly and often causes a loss of company reputation, customer trust and loyalty, and sometimes a loss of customer lives. With the number of product recalls on the rise, the issue has become of utmost importance, and although government agencies are set in place to protect the customers, there is no such agency to act in the best interest of the company experiencing the recall (Sowinski, 2012). Therefore, understanding best practices for the prevention of, reaction to, and recovery from product recalls can be extremely beneficial to a …

Force Out: A Dodgers Bankruptcy, Richard Marrero, Cj Fayton Apr 2013

Force Out: A Dodgers Bankruptcy, Richard Marrero, Cj Fayton

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies

The premise of a chapter 11 bankruptcy is that the business’ going concern value exceeds its liquidation value. It provides the debtor with an opportunity to restructure their debt so that they can pay back their creditors and stay in business.

The debtor’s filing of the bankruptcy petition creates an “automatic stay.”[1] The automatic stay is an injunction that prevents creditors from pursuing legal actions against the debtor and its assets. The automatic stay, however, protects not only the debtor but the creditors as well. In the absence of the automatic stay, creditors would “race to the courthouse” to …

In Re Dewey Ranch Hockey, Llc: The Bankruptcy Of The Phoenix Coyotes, Chris Rowe, Jeff Upshaw

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies

While only a small percentage of Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings garner the attention of the American public, a bankruptcy petition involving a “big four” professional sports franchise (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) is big news to the American sports world. Perhaps the reason is that few, if any, commercial entities make such a passionate connection with its customers as professional sports teams.

In comparison to the other members of the “big four”, the NHL simply does not have the same level of financial success. Almost half of the 30 NHL franchises lost money in the 2011-2012 season.[1] Of the nine …

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies

(From Introduction)

Videogames have come a long way since PONG for Atari was introduced in 1972. The industry has advanced from simplistic 8-bit geometric shapes descending from players’ screens (Tetris) and a side-scrolling, overall-clad plumber saving a princess in a faraway land (Super Mario Bros.). Today, the global videogame industry is a $67 billion enterprise, consisting of hardware (gaming consoles like Nintendo and Playstation), software (the actual videogames themselves), and secondary markets (online games, mobile phones, and other devices). The major players in this enterprise are few—the “AAA” game developers. In the videogame industry, …

Circuit City's Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, Jeff Smith, Peyton Hairston

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies

Circuit City Stores, Inc. sold consumer electronics, personal computers, entertainment software, and appliances in the growing consumer electronics market.[1] Circuit City was founded by Samuel S. Wurtzel in 1949 under the name Wards Company. The store named “Wards” was an acronym of Wurtzel’s family name’s: “W” for Wurtzel, “A” for his son Alan, “R” for his wife Ruth, “D” for his son David, and “S” for his own name.[2] Circuit City was the first electronics superstore and was the nation’s second largest retailer of consumer electronics as recently as 2004.[3] Circuit City began the superstore concept for …

Hostess Brands, Inc. Bankruptcy, Kathryn K. Ganier, Frederick L. Conrad Iii, Wendy G. Patrick

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies

In 1930, the Hostess Corporation[1] began as the Interstate Baking Corporation (IBC). In Kansas City Missouri, flour, wheat, and grain marched from machines as workers placed sliced white squares into Wonder Bread’s iconic yellow, red, and blue packaging.[2]

Hostess grew from its small town beginnings into a large corporation thanks in large part to its innovation in its product lines as well as growth through the acquisition of its competitors. By the end of 2012, “Hostess [was] one of the largest wholesale bakers and distributors of bread and snack cakes in the United States [and] operate[d] 36 bakeries, …

A Blockbuster Failure: How An Outdated Business Model Destroyed A Giant, Todd Davis, John Higgins Apr 2013

A Blockbuster Failure: How An Outdated Business Model Destroyed A Giant, Todd Davis, John Higgins

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Case Studies

The rise of the Internet in the 1990s and 2000s rapidly created new markets. Companies like Apple seized on the ability to distribute music online for a lower price than independent record stores, or even large-scale ones like Tower Records could afford, driving record stores to near-extinction.[1] A similar fate has fallen upon the video rental stores. Giants Movie Gallery and Blockbuster, driven by physical rental stores, began struggling to compete with streaming and mailing platforms. Both were driven into bankruptcy because they failed to adapt quickly enough. A series of poor choices by Blockbuster, including passing on the …

To Believe In Black Stars Or Red Dragons?: Comparing The Foreign Direct Investment Climates Of Ghana And China, Theodore W. Briscoe Iii Apr 2013

To Believe In Black Stars Or Red Dragons?: Comparing The Foreign Direct Investment Climates Of Ghana And China, Theodore W. Briscoe Iii

William & Mary Business Law Review

When thinking of overseas business expansion, most think of China. This is for good reason: China commands a lion’s share of foreign direct investment money. It would shock readers to know that there are destinations that are far more suitable for overseas investment than China. It would shock readers even more to know that one of these destinations is in sub-Saharan Africa.

Ghana—the Black Star country—has quietly put together a legal regime that is extremely attractive for foreign direct investment. When comparing Ghana’s foreign investment policies to China’s, Ghana’s policies are indisputably more favorable to foreign investors. Ghana offers more …

The Constitution, The Roberts Court, And Business: The Significant Business Impact Of The 2011-2012 Supreme Court Term, Corey Ciocchetti

William & Mary Business Law Review

The 2011–2012 Supreme Court Term created quite the media buzz. The Affordable Care Act cases and the controversial Arizona immigration law dominated the headlines. But the Term also included other fascinating yet less sensationalized cases. The Court heard its fair share of criminal law controversies involving derelict defense attorneys and prosecutors, as well as civil procedure disputes involving qualified immunity for witnesses in grand jury proceedings and private parties assisting the government in litigation. The Justices also entertained arguments on a federal law allowing United States citizens born in Jerusalem to have “Israel” stamped as their birthplace on a passport. …

Should Angel-Backed Start-Ups Reject Venture Capital?, Darian M. Ibrahim Apr 2013

Should Angel-Backed Start-Ups Reject Venture Capital?, Darian M. Ibrahim

Faculty Publications

The conventional wisdom is that entrepreneurs seek financing for their high-growth, high-risk start-up companies in a particular order. They begin with friends, family, and "bootstrapping" (e.g., credit card debt). Next they turn to angel investors, or accredited investors (and usually ex-entrepreneurs) who invest their own money in multiple, early-stage start-ups. Finally, after angel funds run dry, entrepreneurs seek funding from venture capitalists (VCs), whose deep pockets and connections lead the startup to an initial public offering (IPO) or sale to a larger company in the same industry (trade sale).

That conventional wisdom may have been the model for start-up success …

A Statistical Analysis Of Public Sector Corruption And Economic Growth, Kaycea Campbell

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

This study reports on the results of a statistical analysis in which the relationship between the independent variable of corruption, as measured by the World Bank, and the dependent variable of economic growth, as measured by percentage of GDP growth per year, was examined. The purpose of this study is to apply empirical methods to the debate on corruption and growth, in which neoclassical theory predicts that corruption retards growth but in which other models, such as Lewis growth and the Kuznets Curve, suggest that corruption may actually speed up growth in underdeveloped countries. The main finding of the study …

Casting A New Mold: The Story Of The Iron Molders’ International Union And The Organization Of National Labor, Jason Dedeker

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The doings of the labor movement during the Civil War were crucial in the development of the great time of unions at the turn of the 19th-century. While the nation was focused on the issue of slavery, the free labor force of the North strove for improved working conditions and more power in the workplace. Workers and the unions they formed faced unique challenges in the Civil War era. The international labor community found the problem of slavery more pressing than the plight of Northern workers. The United States government, comprised mainly of Republicans, discouraged the tactics and goals of …
