Paying To Put Out Fires, Kevin F. Hallock Aug 2014

Paying To Put Out Fires, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

There is surprisingly little academic work on the compensation of firefighters. This may be, in part, because their wages are often set by collective bargaining agreements and that those paid as firefighters are regularly paid by seniority. But many aspects of the labor market can still be studied through this interesting occupation, including labor unions, compensation for job risk and even volunteerism. Consider the mountains of papers on Fortune 500 CEOs relative to the number (500) of employees doing this job in the US. In contrast, consider the tiny number of papers on firefighters relative to the large numbers who …

Implementation Of A New Enterprise Resource Planning System, Lacy Payne Aug 2014

Implementation Of A New Enterprise Resource Planning System, Lacy Payne

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The objective of this thesis was to upgrade an Enterprise Resource planning system that was outdated into a new age Enterprise resource planning system based centered on a scheduling algorithm. This was a key change that needed to be made to transform the company from old thinking to new. Primarily the testing of this implementation was done through mapping of processes, followed by trial and error, and finally improving and sustaining the processes it took to use the system correctly. The mapping of the processes was completed by the Process Manager as well as the Lead, Supervisor, or Manager of …

The Too-Much-Talent Effect: Team Interdependence Determines When More Talent Is Too Much Or Not Enough, Roderick I. Swaab, Michael Schaerer, Eric M. Anicich, Richard Ronay, Adam D. Galinsky Aug 2014

The Too-Much-Talent Effect: Team Interdependence Determines When More Talent Is Too Much Or Not Enough, Roderick I. Swaab, Michael Schaerer, Eric M. Anicich, Richard Ronay, Adam D. Galinsky

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Five studies examined the relationship between talent and team performance. Two survey studies found that people believe there is a linear and nearly monotonic relationship between talent and performance: Participants expected that more talent improves performance and that this relationship never turns negative. However, building off research on status conflicts, we predicted that talent facilitates performance—but only up to a point, after which the benefits of more talent decrease and eventually become detrimental as intrateam coordination suffers. We also predicted that the level of task interdependence is a key determinant of when more talent is detrimental rather than beneficial. Three …

Conservatism And Equity Ownership Of The Founding Family, Shuping Chen, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng Jul 2014

Conservatism And Equity Ownership Of The Founding Family, Shuping Chen, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We investigate the impact of founding family ownership on accounting conservatism. Family ownership is characterised by large, under-diversified equity stake and long investment horizon. These features give family owners both the incentives and the ability to implement conservative financial reporting to reduce legal liability and mitigate agency conflicts with other stakeholders. Since CEOs can have different incentives towards conservatism, we focus on ownership of non-CEO founding family members in our investigation. We find that conservatism increases with non-CEO family ownership, supporting our prediction. This relationship becomes insignificant in family firms with founders serving as CEOs, either due to founder CEOs' …

Preparing Future Faculty Program (Pff) Annual Report, 2013-2014, Wie Yusuf

Career Pathways

It is the mission of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program at Old Dominion University (ODU) to introduce graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to the diverse roles, the responsibilities, and the rewards of an academic career. In doing so it focuses particularly on the teaching and service roles sometimes not included in doctoral training. Fundamental research skills, such as grant writing, publishing, and academic job searching, are also addressed.

The PFF program offers a ‘Preparing Future Faculty Certificate’ to graduate students who document completion of specific activities related to preparing for an academic career. Any ODU and NSU degree-seeking graduate …

Systematic Ict Surveillance By Employers: Are Your Personal Activities Private?, Arlene J. Nicholas Jul 2014

Systematic Ict Surveillance By Employers: Are Your Personal Activities Private?, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

This paper reviews the various methods of information and communications technology (ICT) that is used by employers to peer into the work lives and, in some cases, private lives of employees. Some of the most common methods – such as computer and Internet monitoring, video surveillance, and global positioning systems (GPS) – have resulted in employee disciplines that have been challenged in courts. This paper provides background information on United States (U.S.) laws and court cases which, in this age of easily accessible information, mostly support the employer. Assessments regarding regulations and policies, which will need to be continually updated …

Within-Person Variability In Job Performance: An Integrative Review And Research Agenda, Reeshad S. Dalal, Devasheesh P. Bhave, John Fiset Jul 2014

Within-Person Variability In Job Performance: An Integrative Review And Research Agenda, Reeshad S. Dalal, Devasheesh P. Bhave, John Fiset

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although both researchers and practitioners know that an employee’s performance varies over time within a job, this within-person performance variability is not well understood and in fact is often treated as error. In the current paper, we first identify the importance of a within-person approach to job performance and then review several extant theories of within-person performance variability that, despite vastly different foci, converge on the contention that job performance is dynamic rather than static. We compare and contrast the theories along several common metrics and thereby facilitate a discussion of commonalities, differences, and theory elaboration. In so doing, we …

The Image Of Psychology Programs: The Value Of The Instrumental-Symbolic Framework, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens, Britt De Soete, Nele Libbrecht, Eveline Schollaert, Dimphna Baligant

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As competition for funding and students intensifies, it becomes increasingly important for psychology programs to have an image that is attractive and makes them stand out from other programs. The current study uses the instrumental-symbolic framework from the marketing domain to determine the image of different master's programs in psychology and examines how these image dimensions relate to student attraction and competitor differentiation. The samples consist of both potential students (N = 114) and current students (N = 68) of three psychology programs at a Belgian university: industrial and organizational psychology, clinical psychology, and experimental psychology. The results demonstrate that …

The Relentless Pursuit Of Construct Validity In The Design Of Employment Interviews, Maria Riaz Hamdani, Sorin Valcea, M. R. Buckley Jun 2014

The Relentless Pursuit Of Construct Validity In The Design Of Employment Interviews, Maria Riaz Hamdani, Sorin Valcea, M. R. Buckley

Business Faculty Publications

The construct validity of employment interviews is the greatest challenge faced by employment interview researchers. In this paper, we discuss the theoretical and methodological issues which have an influence upon the construct validity ofemployment interviews.Wepay special attention to issues that emerge at the conceptual development and design stage of interviews. So far, the structuring of employment interviews has been the primary method of improving construct validity. We argue that construct validity can be further improved by bringing theoretical rigor in the design of interviews. For this purpose, we propose steps to reframe the interview dimensions in theoretical frameworks of job …

Follower Perceptions Deserve A Closer Look, Peter D. Harms, Seth M. Spain Jun 2014

Follower Perceptions Deserve A Closer Look, Peter D. Harms, Seth M. Spain

P. D. Harms Publications

On the whole, we embrace the wisdom of Lord and Dinh’s suggestion that leadership researchers need to refocus our attention on the distinction between leadership perception and effectiveness. That said, we hope that the field can move one step further by recognizing the need to treat perceptual biases as more than systematic errors to be controlled for. As encoded in Lord and Dinh’s first two principles, followers are active participants in the construction of leadership phenomena, so the perceptual “baggage” that they bring into the leader–follower system is an important building block in that construction. We believe that by accounting …

Training Evaluation: Audience Resonse System As An Evaluation Tool, R. Hogan, D'Anna Cepela, Brittany Fentress

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Training program evaluation is essential in developing and sustaining effectivetraining interventions. More specifically, measuring learning transfer is essential toany training program as it determines whether learning has occurred and if thelearning objectives have been met. Kirkpatrick (2005), stated that training programevaluation is used “to decide if a program should be continued, to decide if aprogram should be modified, and to demonstrate the value of training – and thusjustify our existence [as trainers/human performance technologists/consultants]” (p.19). The purpose of this study was to describe challenges in evaluating training andhow technology can aid in this process.

Tipping, Technology And Lessons In Compensation Design, Kevin F. Hallock May 2014

Tipping, Technology And Lessons In Compensation Design, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

New technologies seem to be popping up everywhere to make it easier for customers to exercise their power to pay. From personal phone apps to iPad kiosks in restaurants to video screens in taxis, a tip amount is instantly calculated for you just choose the percent or level you wish to tip. All this technological assistance on tipping is also creating exciting, new data sources. Increasingly, labor economists and other social scientists are using such data sources to better understand how people respond to incentives and the resulting workplace implications. The tipping examples described in this article offer some interesting …

Physical Ability Testing: A Review Of Court Cases 1992-2014, Joseph Westlin May 2014

Physical Ability Testing: A Review Of Court Cases 1992-2014, Joseph Westlin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Selecting employees for hire and promotion is one of the most essential functions of an organization. Many companies that have positions which contain a physical component rely on physical ability testing as part of their selection procedure. The establishment of both the Civil Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) had a profound impact on the manner in which selection testing may legally be conducted (Gutman, Koppes, & Vodanovich, 2011). The current study sought to analyze court cases involving physical ability testing. Results revealed that pure ability tests did not significantly differ from work sample tests with regard …

Intergroup Competition As A Double-Edged Sword: How Sex Composition Regulates The Effects Of Competition On Group Creativity, Marcus Baer, Abhijeet K. Vadera, Roger T. A. J. Leenders, Greg R. Oldham May 2014

Intergroup Competition As A Double-Edged Sword: How Sex Composition Regulates The Effects Of Competition On Group Creativity, Marcus Baer, Abhijeet K. Vadera, Roger T. A. J. Leenders, Greg R. Oldham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Building on social role theory, we extend a contingency perspective on intergroup competition proposing that having groups compete against one another is stimulating to the creativity of groups composed largely or exclusively of men but detrimental to the creativity of groups composed largely or exclusively of women. We tested this idea in two separate studies: a laboratory experiment (Study 1) and a field study (Study 2). Study 1 showed that competition had the expected positive effects on the creativity of groups composed mostly or exclusively of men and produced the predicted negative effects on the creativity of groups composed of …

The Role Of Deferred Pay In Retaining Managerial Talent, Radhakrishnan Gopalan, Sheng Huang, Johan Maharjan May 2014

The Role Of Deferred Pay In Retaining Managerial Talent, Radhakrishnan Gopalan, Sheng Huang, Johan Maharjan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine the role of deferred vesting of stock and option grants in reducing executive turnover. To the extent an executive forfeits all unvested stock and option grants if she leaves the firm, deferred vesting will increase the cost (to the executive) of early exit. Using pay Duration proposed in Gopalan, et al., (forthcoming) as a measure of the length of managerial pay, we find that CEOs and non-CEO executives with longer pay Duration are less likely to leave the firm voluntarily. Employing the vesting of a large prior-year stock/option grant as an instrument for Duration, we find the effect …

Conceptualizing And Assessing Interpersonal Adaptability: Towards A Functional Framework, Tom Oliver, Filip Lievens May 2014

Conceptualizing And Assessing Interpersonal Adaptability: Towards A Functional Framework, Tom Oliver, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As a result of the increased frequency and complexity of interpersonal interactions in today’s workplaces, researchers and practitioners have emphasized the need for workers to be interpersonally adaptive (Griffi n, Neal, and Parker, 2007; Pulakos et al., 2000). Increasingly, to accomplish their work, workers need to interact effectively with others in the workplace. This is in part due to the predominance of service-oriented organizations in many economies (Zeithaml and Bitner, 1996). Workers in these organizations are required to spend a considerable part of their day engaging in social interactions and managing social relationships with customers (Schneider, 1994) and teams (Kozlowski …

It’s amazing how quickly humans adapt to changing circumstances. A few months ago I wrote about how incredibly challenging my first month of life was with a newborn—what many refer to as “baby boot camp,” a perfect term since that’s exactly what it was like thrust into a completely new state of being where life is organized around one thing.

Leadership In Action: Leading, Learning, And Reflecting On A Career In Academic Libraries, Patricia A. Iannuzzi

Library Faculty Presentations

The library literature is rife with books and articles about leadership, much of it derived or applied from the research external to the library profession. Our professional literature is also rich with surveys about the qualities of leadership. This opening session provides a counterpoint to the theoretical, academic approach to the study of leadership in libraries. Based upon more than 30 years of experience, including positions ranging from library assistant to dean, Patricia Iannuzzi provides a practical approach to leadership roles for academic librarians on campus, in our profession, and within the higher education arena. In this personal reflection, Iannuzzi …

Improving Saasi’S Knowledge Management Practices, Ximeng Chen Apr 2014

Improving Saasi’S Knowledge Management Practices, Ximeng Chen

MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015

Binghamton University’s Student Affairs Assessment and Strategic Initiatives (SAASI) is facing a variety of problems related to knowledge management (KM). Regarding explicit knowledge, SAASI has no universal format for documenting the analysis process and professional staff and student workers have different skill sets. Meanwhile it receives documents from other departments within Student Affairs Division and those data require a significant amount of time for SAASI to spend on reformatting to make it useable. Regarding tacit knowledge, since many of the student positions are on year appointments, there is a great deal of turnover in the department. The turnover influences the …

Looking To Quit? Recruiting Community College Students Into An Online Smoking Cessation Study, Michael R. Dunn

MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015

The Web-Assisted Tobacco Intervention (WATI), a research team from the University of Rochester, has been recruiting research subjects from community college campuses since 2012. Recruitment has proved to be difficult for the team and has slowed the progress of the research project. WATI is seeking to recruit community college students into a smoking cessation study. The WATI team relies upon the help of champions (representatives) at the participating community colleges to facilitate local recruitment efforts. This capstone project seeks to discover effective and ineffective recruitment methods which have been used by the champions at the participating community colleges.

Personal Web Use In The Workplace: Why Does It Persist In A Context Of Strict Security And Monitoring?, Andrea M. Polzer-Debruyne, Micheal T. Stratton, Gary Stark

Journal Articles

Over the last decade, Personal Web Use (PWU) in the workplace has received considerable attention. This study examined factors that both inhibit and encourage PWU behaviors. The context was a municipal government agency in the U.S. with strong policy and electronic restrictions on PWU. Our study builds on extant research byinvestigating both self-reported PWU (from an online survey of 116 users atthe agency) and objective reports fromthe agency’s electronic monitoring (EM) of PWU. Results of our hypothesis tests indicated that group norms, individual moral norms, and perceived time availability had an effect on PWU while boredom had no effect. Group norms …
