Transitioning College Media From Print Focused Business Models To Digitally Focused Business Models, Celina Oseguera
Transitioning College Media From Print Focused Business Models To Digitally Focused Business Models, Celina Oseguera
Journalism
The noticeable downturn in print advertising indicates a need for change in the news industry business model. College media is not immune to this decline and need for change. A change in business model calls for transitioning to an alternative system that does not primarily rely on print products and advertising — a digitally focused business model. Many college media organizations around the United States have started to pursue this type of model, changing the way they produce and present news in the process. Taking into account the state of print focused business models in the general and collegiate news …
The Role Of Islamic Finance In Economic Development, Nora Khan
The Role Of Islamic Finance In Economic Development, Nora Khan
Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics
Islamic financial institutions have been growing rapidly in the past few years. Islamic finance refers to investments that are permissible in accordance with Sharia, the Islamic law. Sharia law views money as a measuring tool for value and not an “asset” itself. “It does not permit receipt and payment of riba(interest), gharar(excessive uncertainty), maysir(gambling), short sales or financing activities that it considers harmful to society” (IMF website). Interest, a form of income from money, is therefore prohibited. For example, the income obtained from banks must come from the gain or loss of the enterprises they underwrite and not from interest …
Fdi And Manufacturing Industry In Asia, Luyi Jin
Fdi And Manufacturing Industry In Asia, Luyi Jin
Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics
The study finds that China’s manufacturing still maintained a growth level from 2003 to 2013. However, the growth has been declining. The rapid development of ASEAN economies led to the rise of the emerging manufacturing countries which have slowly adjusted and found their own advantages in challenging China.
The main conclusions of this paper are twofold. First, China will soon lose her low labor cost competitive advantage and needs to look for new strategy or industrial upgrades. Second, the current pattern of international division of labor will last for a fairly long period that developing countries will continue to serve …
Portfolio Recallocation And Exchange Rate Dynamics, King Chun Wong
Portfolio Recallocation And Exchange Rate Dynamics, King Chun Wong
Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics
This empirical paper aims to review a previous literature entitles “Portfolio Reallocation and Exchange Rate Dynamics”. The literature stated that including financial market structure can provide a micro-foundation to complement other macro-based models for exchange rate dynamics which typically are meaningful for the medium and long terms but not satisfactory for the short run. The model in the literature offers another way to look at exchange rate dynamics that is significant in the short run and more practical in nature. Undoubtedly, many investors in the financial market, such as traders, dealers, fund managers, and speculators who adjust their portfolio components …
How Do Cdos And Cdss Influence The Crisis Of 2008, Martin Buffet
How Do Cdos And Cdss Influence The Crisis Of 2008, Martin Buffet
Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics
Everybody has heard about the “subprime” crisis but do we really know how it occurred and why this phenomenon had such an impact on our economies. One aspect of the answer to this question lies in the trade of credit default swaps (CDSs). These financial products led to less transparency in the markets and to a very collectively vulnerable financial system. This created a vicious circle that had not been anticipated by our financial regulators. In this paper, we will discuss how it occurred and what could have been done to avoid, or at lease reduce, the impact of these …

Costa and Jakob's paper, Enhanced Performance Measurement of Mutual Funds: Running the Benchmark Index through the Hurdles, is highly related to this empirical paper and is generally based on Carhart's four-factor model (Carhart, 1997) with US securities market data. Apart from the comparison between Asia Pacific market excluding Japan and US market, further research on auxiliary and heteroscedasticity will also be conducted.
Value Added As The Tax Base For Enterprise Income, Nicos Zafiris
Value Added As The Tax Base For Enterprise Income, Nicos Zafiris
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
The paper addresses the long standing asymmetry in the tax treatment of debt and equity costs through a direct comparison of two hypothetical regimes based exclusively on income taxation, broadly defined, and value added taxation. The model presented widens existing debate to encompass the choice between entrepreneurial and contractual use of inputs generally and including labour, as well as capital. Using representative functional forms and numerical illustrations the analysis explores the effect of the tax regimes on firm decisions concerning input selection, output level and vertical integration. The greater neutrality of value added taxation is shown to produce gains in …

This paper studies the effects of exempt treatment of financial services under a VATsystem. We develop a general equilibrium model with elastic labor supply, endogenous entry, anda banking sector. The banking sector provides loan services to producers and payment servicesto consumers. Our model display three key distortions under exempt treatment: (i) self-supplybias in the banking sector, (ii) consumption distortions, (iii) input distortions and tax cascading. Then, we calibrate our model to match the salient features of the tax system EU countries. Atax neutral policy regime switch from exempt treatment to full-taxation in loan services improveswelfare about 4%. Shutting down the entry …
Essays In Corporate Responsibility And Finance, Mert Demir
Essays In Corporate Responsibility And Finance, Mert Demir
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation consists of three chapters:
Chapter 1: The Effects of Corporate Social Performance and Social Norms on Market Valuation of Nonfinancial Disclosures Using a novel measure of the quality of corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosures by global companies, this paper analyzes how CSR report quality affects firm value when mediating roles of social pressure and CSR performance are considered. I find that firms operating in socially controversial industries enjoy higher valuations when they issue high-quality CSR reports. I also find that for firms with poor CSR performance, higher-quality CSR disclosure is associated with a decline in firm value, while …

The Viability Of Profit-Loss Sharing Models To Finance Small And Medium Enterprises: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Alhanoof Alghamdi
The Viability Of Profit-Loss Sharing Models To Finance Small And Medium Enterprises: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Alhanoof Alghamdi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to explore the role of profit-loss sharing (PLS) models to alleviate access to finance for small and medium enterprises in Saudi Arabia, in the light of the stringent requirements of traditional financial institutions, to ensure the growth and development of the SME sector. A central question of this study is the extent to which Islamic banks can adopt profit-loss sharing modes to finance SMEs. The main results present the barriers preventing Islamic banks from the application of profit-loss sharing that increase incidence of agency problems for such institutions. High asymmetry of information and the nature of Islamic …

Australian Real Estate Stock Reactions To Firb Regulation Changes, Henry Wei
Australian Real Estate Stock Reactions To Firb Regulation Changes, Henry Wei
CMC Senior Theses
This study analyzes the share price reactions to real estate development and building/construction materials corporations in relation to FIRB rule changes. It appears companies as a whole were indifferent to the rule changes; however individual securities returns were wildly different. These findings suggest that the FIRB rule changes had a mixed effect on different corporations possibly based on their exposure to the Australian real estate market.

Is Silence The Answer?, Gator Adams
CMC Senior Theses
This study examines the relationship between company management guidance, and ex-ante crash risk over the duration of 2008(Jan 2006-Dec 2009) financial crisis using the implied volatility skew, which is based upon ex-ante volatility implied by the pricing model developed by Black-Scholes (1973). The study finds that over the duration of this crisis period, management guidance decreases with a rise in ex-ante crash risk. Further, the study provides evidence on the relationship of management guidance and earnings volatility, and how that is affected by a firm's industry product concentration based on the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) score.

Do Disaster Experience And Knowledge Affect Insurance Take-Up Decisions?”, Jing Cai, Changcheng Song
Do Disaster Experience And Knowledge Affect Insurance Take-Up Decisions?”, Jing Cai, Changcheng Song
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examines the effect of experience and knowledge on weather insurance adoption. First, we conduct insurance games with farmers, and find that the treatment improves real insurance take-up by 46%. The effect is not driven by changes in risk attitudes and perceived probability of disasters, or by learning of insurance benefits, but is driven by the experience acquired in the game. Second, we find that providing information about the payout probability has a strong positive effect on insurance take-up. Finally, when subjects receive both treatments, the probability information has a greater impact on take-up than does the disaster experience.
Luck, Justice And Systemic Financial Risk, John Linarelli
Luck, Justice And Systemic Financial Risk, John Linarelli
Scholarly Works
Systemic financial risk is one of the most significant collective action problems facing societies. The Great Recession brought attention to a tragedy of the commons in capital markets, in which market participants, from first-time homebuyers to Wall Street financiers, acted in ways beneficial to themselves individually, but which together caused substantial collective harm. Two kinds of risk are at play in complex chains of transactions in financial markets: ordinary market risk and systemic risk. Two moral questions are relevant in such cases. First, from the standpoint of interactional morality, does a person have a moral duty to avoid risk of …

Short selling predicts future stock returns globally. We use 11 short-sale measures to examine the informativeness of short sales in 38 countries for the July 2006 to December 2014 period. We find that different short-sale measures display different return predictability. The days-to-cover ratio and loan supply measures have the most robust predictive power in the global capital market. We also document significant cross-country differences in the predictive power of the short selling measures and find that return predictability is stronger in countries with mild forms of short-sale restrictions, better market quality, and more developed markets.
