Management Faculty Publications

The benefits of entrepreneurial mentorship are well documented, but there is limited research on how entrepreneurs connect with mentors, especially in digital settings. We partnered with an online platform that connects entrepreneurs to potential mentors to conduct a field experiment in online mentoring. Drawing on literature on entrepreneurial mentorship and Social Cognitive Theory, we compared the effects of three interventions on the likelihood of reaching out and making a connection with a mentor in a digital setting. We find that showing entrepreneurs a video of a successful mentor–mentee relationship increases the chances that they will reach out to a potential …

How Do Principles Textbooks Treat The Return To Entrepreneurship? The Missing Factor, John Estill, Tom Means Jan 2019

How Do Principles Textbooks Treat The Return To Entrepreneurship? The Missing Factor, John Estill, Tom Means

Faculty Publications

Principles textbooks have improved in incorporating entrepreneurship intheory. However, they still generally lack simple demonstrations of theentrepreneurial input, particularly when teaching the theory of a normal rateof return. Many texts are unclear over the definition of a normal return andits constituent parts. Our paper (1) reviews the theory of the entrepreneurialinput; (2) sorts how popular textbooks calculate a normal rate of returnconsistent with their definition of the entrepreneurial input; and (3)provides a simple numerical example that incorporates the entrepreneurialinput, which can be more fully developed in intermediate texts.

What It Takes To Be A Successful Entrepreneur In The Philippines, Mitzie Irene P. Conchada Jan 2017

What It Takes To Be A Successful Entrepreneur In The Philippines, Mitzie Irene P. Conchada

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

For a developing country such as the Philippines, entrepreneurial activities play an important role in providing alternative sources of income. As of 2012, there were 940,886 registered micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippines (99.6% of the total establishments), majority of which are in the retail and wholesale industry. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2014 survey also reflects that most of the types of businesses are in the retail industry, particularly retail sales of food and beverage items and other basic essentials. This is reflected in the vast number of sari-sari stores or retail stores and food stalls …

Social Capital, Informal Governance, And Post-Ipo Firm Performance: A Study Of Chinese Entrepreneurial Firms, Jerry X. Cao, Yuan Ding, Hua Zhang Apr 2016

Social Capital, Informal Governance, And Post-Ipo Firm Performance: A Study Of Chinese Entrepreneurial Firms, Jerry X. Cao, Yuan Ding, Hua Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Social capital can serve as informal governance in weak investor-protection regimes. Using hand-collected data on entrepreneurs' political connections and firm ownership, we construct several original measures of social capital and examine their effect on the performance of entrepreneurial firms in China after their initial public offerings. Political connections or a high percentage of external investors tend to enhance firm performance, but intragroup related-party transactions commonly lead to performance decline. These forms of social capital have a strong influence on the performance of Chinese firms, whereas formal governance variables such as board size or board independence have little effect. Although social …

The Power Of Words In Tension: Enterprise/Strategy As A Dilemma In Neoliberalism’S Persistence., Brendan O'Rourke Aug 2014

The Power Of Words In Tension: Enterprise/Strategy As A Dilemma In Neoliberalism’S Persistence., Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

We address how enterprise is related to, another important discourse, strategy. From a discourse analysis of the talk of small firm owner-managers, emerges a view of strategy and enterprise as a single, integrated entity, bound together by some commonalities but more importantly by paired opposites reminiscent of ideological dilemmas (Billig, Condor, Edwards, Gane, Middleton & Radley, 1988). This dilemmatic nature of enterprise/strategy discourse adds to explanations for the persistence of the neoliberal form of enterprise, with the entrepreneur as the heroic saviour of all, based on the entrepreneur as an empty signifier (Jones & Spicer, 2009; Kenny & …

The Myth Of The Immigrant Entrepreneur, Daniel Thorson Jan 2014

The Myth Of The Immigrant Entrepreneur, Daniel Thorson

Summer Research

Abstract: In this paper, I examine the unique business environment with regard to Small- to Medium-sized Enterprises that has manifested in Hong Kong over the last two decades, looking especially through the lenses of financial and immigration regulations as well as cultural considerations. Business in Hong Kong is presented with an unprecedented opportunity in the form of its open regulatory environment, but how do the regulations in place currently contribute to or subtract from entrepreneurial pursuits? I propose that even with Hong Kong’s immigrant industrialist legacy and reputation for free business with well-endowed financial institutions, it is impossibly difficult to …
