The benefits of entrepreneurial mentorship are well documented, but there is limited research on how entrepreneurs connect with mentors, especially in digital settings. We partnered with an online platform that connects entrepreneurs to potential mentors to conduct a field experiment in online mentoring. Drawing on literature on entrepreneurial mentorship and Social Cognitive Theory, we compared the effects of three interventions on the likelihood of reaching out and making a connection with a mentor in a digital setting. We find that showing entrepreneurs a video of a successful mentor–mentee relationship increases the chances that they will reach out to a potential …

The Importance Of Business Plan Proficiency To Business School Graduates, Madeline Colclasure
The Importance Of Business Plan Proficiency To Business School Graduates, Madeline Colclasure
Senior Honors Theses
Small businesses are one of the largest groups of employers in the United States. Success of these businesses is, therefore, very important to the economy at large. Entrepreneurs who write business plans, in general, receive more funding from third parties such as banks and venture capital firms and are more likely to be successful. Entrepreneurs who receive a business education and have the support of a mentor are also more likely to be successful in the long term. Incorporating business planning, and activities such as business plan competitions and building incubators on campus, enhance classroom learning.

Principles textbooks have improved in incorporating entrepreneurship intheory. However, they still generally lack simple demonstrations of theentrepreneurial input, particularly when teaching the theory of a normal rateof return. Many texts are unclear over the definition of a normal return andits constituent parts. Our paper (1) reviews the theory of the entrepreneurialinput; (2) sorts how popular textbooks calculate a normal rate of returnconsistent with their definition of the entrepreneurial input; and (3)provides a simple numerical example that incorporates the entrepreneurialinput, which can be more fully developed in intermediate texts.
