All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Lloyd K. Bishop has stated that individualized instruction has been one of the most predominant themes in education for over a decade. Individualized instruction places as its central focus the welfare of the individual. All other elements are molded to facilitate the development of the individual.

One of the early outstanding presentations of this theme was that of Jean Jacques Rousseau in his immortal 'Emile'. The significance of the individual was one of the pervasive themes during the establishment of the United States of America. The welfare of the individual is one of the most prominent themes of government and …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Transcription is the ultimate goal of shorthand, according to Karaim, and mailable copy and rapid production are the primary aims of transcription. The ability to transcribe shorthand notes into usable printed form should be acquired before a stenographer has a marketable shorthand skill. Driska writes that "no matter how skillful the shorthand student may be in recording dictation, she is not properly fitted for work in an office unless she can transcribe her notes quickly and accurately."

Jester Writes that businessmen want transcripts which are correct in details of English mechanics, as well as being accurate transcripts of dictation. A …

A Comparison Of Selected Characteristics Of Two-Year Office Administration And Four-Year Business Education Students At Utah State University, Moneice S. G. Stocker

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Much has been researched and written about school curriculum. A number of recent articles have focused attention on the student as an individual learner (Edmund, 1970) and away from "content" emphasis temporarily spurred by the advent of the Russian Sputnik (Cremin, 1961). Virtually every subject in the curriculum has been considered. The overall concern has been the improvement of student learning (Woolf, 1972). Efforts have also been made to increase the relevancy of learning.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The trend today is toward the individualized approaches in the teaching of typewriting and other business subjects, Susan Schrumpf notes that this concept is continuously gaining popularity because the spotlight is clearly on the student -- his abilities and limitations -- and how the business educator can best minister his needs. if individualized instruction is utilized properly, it is the best possible preparation.

Keeping in mind that the primary goal of society is that of assisting the individual to reach his highest potential, individualization of instruction is the answer to many problems for vocational educators. Howe states:

A democratic society …

The Uses Of Personal Typewriting By Students At Utah State University And Skyview High School, Joseph Henry Wilson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The changing concept of the uses of the typewriter has had an enormous effect on the teaching of typewriting. In addition to the vocational objective, the personal-use objective has been added. Personal-use typewriting has as its goal the material that the student is likely to typewrite for himself; vocational typewriting is focused on what others want typed for them. The distinguishing characteristic in teaching the two is therefore not the skill accomplishment so much as the kind of material involved (13).

A study released by Hosler and Maske (4) seems to substantiate the reasoning that students in a personal-use typing …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

There is a tradition in vocational education which emphasizes teaching technical knowledge and skills while neglecting the development of attitudes and social skills which have been shown to be important causes of problems for office workers. The terms in general use to identify these skills and attitudes are work adjustment and occupational adjustment. Borow calls them " ... the work ethos, a set of attitudes, rules of etiquette, and interpersonal skills involving relations with fellow workers, supervisors, and clients." He goes on to say that:

It is astonishing to what degree the school and the community assume that any student …

One major aspect of business education has always been character training. In many cases, businessmen feel that the technical skills are not as important as good character. Therefore, business educators must consider the wishes of the businessman and train their students to fill the jobs he offers. By trying to instill many of the desirable personal characteristics in students, business educators may help meet this goal.

The character traits needed by business would depend on the needs of the individual business and the personal preferences of the person in charge of hiring. There are differences, both in quantity and quality, …

According to Maze, "A society that guarantees the social and political freedom of its members, through democratic means, and which extends this freedom into the realm of economics, may be expected to place a heavy responsibility upon its members to protect these freedoms through the exercise of sound choices among alternative means to desired ends." The educational means by which the individual learns of these alternatives must be provided.

LaSalle found that while automation is increasing at an even accelerating pace, little emphasis is apparent in high school curriculums on the significance of automated processes for prospective office workers. He further stated that business education departments should study local situations and prepare students to qualify for available data processing employment.

A Pilot Study To Determine The Characteristics And Acceptance Of A Mobile Office Education Classroom To Serve Small High Schools In Utah, Arlyn N. Anderson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

For many years the office practice curriculums in the small high schools in Utah have been incomplete. Small high schools generally do not offer the same opportunities for learning as larger high schools due to the lack of funds, a smaller student body, and a shortage of trained personnel. Their distance from larger metropolitan areas where office opportunities are more readily available has made it economically unsound to offer such training programs and facilities. Often, students do not receive adequate training to prepare them for entry level jobs upon graduation from high school.

Students graduating from small high schools must …

All societies are faced with the problems of what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce goods and services. To each of the many facets of each of these questions are many alternatives.
