The Defensive Expansion Approach To Multinational Banking: Evidence To Date, Barry Williams Apr 2002

The Defensive Expansion Approach To Multinational Banking: Evidence To Date, Barry Williams

Barry Williams

This paper integrates the defensive expansion hypothesis in multinational banking with the internalisation approach to the multinational enterprise. This framework is then used to structure a review of the literature to date regarding the proposition that multinational banks follow their clients abroad, otherwise called the defensive expansion hypothesis. Both theoretical and empirical issues relevant to the study of the defensive expansion hypothesis are canvassed. The paper concludes that the defensive expansion hypothesis is best modelled using firm level data, and that investment measures are a preferred proxy for following clients. Furthermore, studies considering the defensive expansion hypothesis should control for …

Corporate Governance And Anti-Takeover Devices, Helen Lange, Ian Ramsay, Li-Anne Woo Jun 2000

Corporate Governance And Anti-Takeover Devices, Helen Lange, Ian Ramsay, Li-Anne Woo

Li-Anne Woo

This paper seeks to establish what form of management structure, ownership structure and financial characteristics are exhibited by firms that propose and subsequently adopt anti-takeover charter amendments (ATCAs) in Australia over the period June 1986 to December 1990. An ATCA is a restriction of partial takeover activity implemented through shareholder approval to changes in a firm's constitution. Approval for such changes is obtained through majority agreement from a plebiscite of shareholders. The study adopts a control sample design to analyse if characteristics differ statistically from adopting ATCA firms and those which do not adopt ATCAs during the investigation period. Following …

Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe Aug 1994

Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe

Thomas D Berry

The authors develop a measure of public information flow to financial markets and use it to document the patterns of information arrival, with an emphasis on the intraday flows. The measure is the number of news releases by Reuter's News Service per unit of time. The authors find that public information arrival is nonconstant, displaying seasonalities and distinct intraday patterns. Next they relate their measure of public information to aggregate measures of intraday market activity. The authors' results suggest a positive, moderate relationship between public information and trading volume but an insignificant relationship with price volatility. Copyright 1994 by American …

Fnma Mortgage Commitments As Put Options: An Empirical Examination, Thomas Berry, Adam Gehr Dec 1984

Fnma Mortgage Commitments As Put Options: An Empirical Examination, Thomas Berry, Adam Gehr

Thomas D Berry

The Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) auctions commitments to purchase mortgages. An examination of the terms of the commitment contract shows that these commitments are actually put options on mortgages. The contract is unusual, however, in that the price of the commitment is a fixed percentage of the value of the mortgages. In the auction, the dealers effectively bid the exercise price at which they would be willing to pay the fixed commitment price. In this paper, we study the economics of the FNMA auction. We use a two-state approximation to the American put pricing model for interest-dependent securities to …
