Corporate activism is a growing area of study that has become more important as the political climate becomes increasingly divided. This project evaluates how corporate activism affects company success. Four significant political events were chosen and within each event two to three companies with varying responses were analyzed to determine best practices for organizations looking to engage in corporate activism in the future. Research has shown that organizational communication plays a pivotal role in both employee engagement and commitment to the organization. However, in today’s business world, employees are required to process ever increasing amounts of information through a growing number of communication channels using various information and communication technologies (ICT). Potable To Poisonous: An Analysis Of The Flint, Michigan Water Crisis, Christina M. Reilly

Flint, Michigan, switched its drinking water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River in April 2014 to cut costs after a projected deficit. When an accumulation of lead and bacteria contamination was discovered over a year after the switch, Michigan was declared to be in a Federal State of Emergency. This case study investigates the events and actions leading to both the water contamination and public exposure of the crisis, as well as explores how the constituents responded and continue to be impacted by the events.

On October 13, 2011, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued a guidance on corporate disclosure of cyber-risks and information security breaches (SEC, 2011). To determine if a company disclosed information on the breach, I reviewed the company’s risk factors, management’s discussion and analysis of financial conditions and results of operations, description of the business, legal proceedings, financial statement disclosures, and disclosure controls and procedures. However, the disclosure regulations from this guidance are vague and thus do little to force disclosure of valuable information.
