Levels And Degrees Of Emergence: Toward A Matrix Of Complexity In Entrepreneurship, Benyamin Lichtenstein
Levels And Degrees Of Emergence: Toward A Matrix Of Complexity In Entrepreneurship, Benyamin Lichtenstein
Benyamin Lichtenstein
Abstract: Emergence is at the core of entrepreneurship research, which has explored the coming-into-being of opportunities, new organisations, re-organisations, and new industries, agglomerations, and so on. Emergence is also at the theoretical core of complexity science, which is dedicated to exploring how and why emergence happens in dynamic systems like entrepreneurship. I propose a definition for emergence, which leads to the notion that emergence can occur in ‘degrees’ – from 1st-degree emergence to 2nd-degree and 3rd-degree emergence. Next, I provide a complexity-based explanation for the driver of emergence – ‘opportunity tension’, which sparks the entrepreneuring process. Finally, I draw from …
In Cds We Trust - An Analysis Of Credit Default Swaps In Contract And Regulatory Law, Patrick Winfried Ladon
In Cds We Trust - An Analysis Of Credit Default Swaps In Contract And Regulatory Law, Patrick Winfried Ladon
Patrick Ladon
This paper analyzes the utility of the credit default swap, examining its vital characteristics in contract law and within the new legal framework established after the multi-trillion dollar plunge in the credit default swaps market in 2008. While market participants tend only to measure the credit risk mitigation effects of credit default swaps, this paper provides a comparative legal review of the credit default swap, focusing on its aleatory element in the light of such traditional contract types as the gambling contract, the financial guarantee or the insurance contract. Although the advantage of credit default swaps as credit information sharing …

Collective Choice, Justin Schwartz
Collective Choice, Justin Schwartz

This short nontechnical article reviews the Arrow Impossibility Theorem and its implications for rational democratic decisionmaking. In the 1950s, economist Kenneth J. Arrow proved that no method for producing a unique social choice involving at least three choices and three actors could satisfy four seemingly obvious constraints that are practically constitutive of democratic decisionmaking. Any such method must violate such a constraint and risks leading to disturbingly irrational results such and Condorcet cycling. I explain the theorem in plain, nonmathematical language, and discuss the history, range, and prospects of avoiding what seems like a fundamental theoretical challenge to the possibility …

Dispositional Factors As Determinant Of Employee Engagement In It Sector: A Study In Ncr Delhi, Ridhi Arora Research Scholar, Dr. Bhavana Adhikari Deputy Dean Academics
Ridhi Arora
In the prevailing competitive environment, engaged employees are viewed as a strategic asset by both academicians and practicing managers alike. Recent research has shown that dispositional factors have a strong impetus on the engagement level of employees; organizations are now putting their thrust to appropriately map the type of personality of employees during hiring and selection process to determine the best role fit and attitude of employees. The purpose of the present study is to explore how dispositional factors act as determinant of employee engagement with special reference to IT Sector where talent retention and engagement has always been the …
Board Diversity And Firm Performance: The Indonesian Evidence, Salim Darmadi
Board Diversity And Firm Performance: The Indonesian Evidence, Salim Darmadi
Salim Darmadi
This paper examines the associations between diversity of board members and financial performance of the firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Three demographic characteristics of board members—gender, nationality, and age—are used as the proxies for diversity. Using a sample of 169 listed firms, this study finds that both accounting and market performance have significant negative associations with gender diversity. Nationality diversity is found to have no influence on firm performance. In contrast, the proportion of young members is positively related to market performance, providing evidence that young people in the boardrooms are associated with improved financial performance.
Managing Nigeria’S Transformation Agenda: The Leadership Challenge, Professor Ben C Osisioma, Professor Hilda Osisioma
Managing Nigeria’S Transformation Agenda: The Leadership Challenge, Professor Ben C Osisioma, Professor Hilda Osisioma
Prof Ben Chuka Osisioma
Nigeria’s President won the 2011 Federal Government elections on the groundswell of popular support and the promise of a transformation agenda. Transformation is a strong word that portends a radical, structural and fundamental reappraisal of the basic assumptions that underlie our reforms and developmental efforts. The challenge before government is how to move the nation away from an oil-dominated economy, institute the basics for a private-sector driven economy, build the local economy on international best practices, transform a passive oil industry to a more pro-active one, and restructure the country along the lines of a more decentralized federalism. But beyond …

Growing research on Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) has addressed a variety of questions focusing on aspects ranging from open source development processes and developer motivation, to economic and policymaking implications. Nevertheless, a few authors have examined the adoption of FLOSS and its impact on organizational change and innovation. Adoption studies represent a particularly promising area for information system researchers to investigate the relationship between the specific properties of FLOSS and the processes of implementation and use. The goal of this article is to contribute to this field of research by discussing a former multitargeted research agenda and by defining …
When We Trust Too Much, Martin Mathews
When We Trust Too Much, Martin Mathews
Martin Mathews
This paper examines questions concerning the creation of trust in mature industrial district in south-east France; notably the quality of intra-district exchanges when compared with extra-district exchanges. The consequences of trusting habits learnt and reinforced in a highly socialised environment are highlighted. Finally, a suspension mechanism, that of identity and role, that SME managers employ in order to reduce uncertainty will be discussed. Results demonstrate that managers have solid foundations on which they may base their local trust decisions. However, they frequently transfer their trusting attitudes to external partners in the absence of such solid foundations. The consequences of this …

Sport Sovereignty At Bay: The Impact Of Globalization And The Multi-National Sport Enterprise On The Westphalian-Based International Sport Structure, Rick Burton, Matthew Robinson, Emir Turam
Rick Burton
The existing framework for international sport is based on the guiding principles of the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. The Peace of Westphalia promoted sovereignty, self-determination, equality between states, and non-intervention of one state in the internal affairs of another state, and it has served as the basis for international relations for several centuries. Vernon observed that “the advanced world, carried ebulliently on the crest of a technological revolution in transportation and communication, has absentmindedly set up a virile system of international institutions and relationships that sit alongside the system of nation-states.” Vernon’s observation captures the essence of the existing …

This paper explores the importance of integrating knowledge with quantitative modeling process to improve sales operations in multiple product selling situations in the pharmaceutical industry. A knowledge-based approach is proposed to minimize challenges in detailing multiple products to physicians who are more and more difficult accessing in recent years. The performance of this new approach is compared against the traditional approach via actual implementation by the firm that is sponsoring the research. Results based on three months of implementation indicate that the knowledge-based approach performs significantly better with increasing the number of responsive physicians by 71% and profit by 9%.

Triple Bottom Line Reporting For Cpas, Steven Mintz
Triple Bottom Line Reporting For Cpas, Steven Mintz

There is a growing trend of governmental agencies and non- profit organizations issuing TBL reports. TBL reporting addresses three broad areas affecting society: economic, including financial reporting; ecological, including the environment; and social, including social responsibility. Accountability for the environmental, social, and economic impacts of a com-pany is increasingly becoming a part of every manager’s job. TBL reporting is emerging as an important and necessary part of an organization’s disclosure. TBL is consistent with the broad stakeholder perspective of corporate social responsibility (CSR), which entails reporting to a wider group of stakeholders comprising not only shareholders but also creditors, employees, …

An Invitation To Portfolio Decision Analysis, Ahti Salo, Jeffrey Keisler, Alec Morton
Jeffrey Keisler
Portfolio Decision Analysis (PDA) – the application of decision analysis to the problem of selecting a subset or portfolio from a large set of alternatives – accounts for a significant share, perhaps the greater part, of decision analysis consulting. By construction, PDA has a sound theoretical and methodological basis, and its ability to contribute to better resource allocation decisions has been demonstrated in numerous applications. This book pulls together some of the rich and diverse efforts as a starting point for treating PDA as a promising and distinct area of study and application. In this introductory chapter, we first describe …
